This study was performed to determine the effects of feeding pollen cake containing honeybee royal jelly on Bombus terrestris colony development. In total, 125 bumblebee queens, 68 of which were fed pollen cake containing 10% royal jelly and 57 of which were fed normal pollen cake, were used. We found that 84% of the queens fed pollen cake containing royal jelly and 82% of those fed normal pollen cake laid eggs; 56% of the queens fed normal pollen cake established colonies, whereas queens fed pollen cake containing royal jelly did not establish any colonies and their larvae died. Fatty Acid Composition Of Some Commercial Marine Fish Feeds Available In Turkey, Mustafa Yildiz

The fatty acid composition was determined for 14 feeds commonly available in Turkey for marine fish species, particularly sea bream and sea bass (juvenile, adult, and broodstock). Nine of the juvenile and adult fish feeds and 1 of the broodstock fish feeds were imported. The other feeds were produced in Turkey. The n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (n-3 HUFA) levels in the feeds of juvenile, adult, and broodstock fish were 2.5%-3.9%, 1.5%-3.5%, and 2.1%-4.9% of the dry weight of diets, respectively. Pharmacokinetics of cefepime was determined following single dose intravenous (IV) and intramuscular (IM) administration at the rate of 10 mg/kg body weight in a crossover design with an interval of 21 days between IV and IM injections. The objective of the research was to investigate the relationship among functional traits (body condition score (BCS), milk yield (MY), milking speed (MS), dry matter intake (DMI) and body weight (BW)). Data were from multiparous dairy cows (n = 55) of Chamau research farm of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Switzerland. Principal component analysis with correlation matrix was used to find the relationship among BCS, MY, MS, DMI, BW, and other fixed effects including breed, year at calving, season, parity and year-season interaction. Apparent Nutrient Digestibility Of Balanced Diets With Soy Bean Extract Or Meat And Bone Meal In The Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus L.) Infected With Vibrio Anguillarum, Kenan Engi̇n, Ferbal Özkan

Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus L., infected with Vibrio anguillarum or not infected were fed balanced diets containing vegetal (solvent extracted soy bean meal (SBM)) or animal (meat and bone meal (MBM)) protein sources in order to demonstrate the apparent nutrient and energy digestibility. Regardless of protein sources in the diets, feed intake was lower in the infected group. Apparent nutrient (AD_{DM} and AD_{CP}) and energy digestibility (AD_{kJ}) values of Nile tilapia fed the SBM diet were significantly better (P < 0.05) than those fed the CONT and MBM diets and changed little between the measurement days in both groups (non-infected and infected). Although no visible symptoms associated with vibriosis were evident on either the skin or internal organs, the significantly lower (P < 0.05) AD_{DM}, AD_{CP}, and AD_{kJ} values obtained between day 1 and 10 (specifically on days 3 and 10) in the infected group fed the CONT and MBM diets might have implicated the pathogenicity of the bacteria. Further research concentrating on higher amounts of solvent extracted soy bean and meat and bone meal, different environmental conditions and doses of infection with V. anguillarum and immune response parameters including physiological and cellular stress responses is needed in order to identify the overall apparent nutrient digestibility of plant and animal protein sources in Nile tilapia infected with V. anguillarum.

This study investigated the effects of dietary supplementation with hydrated aluminosilicate (antitoxic nutrient-ATN), based on zeolitic ore (of > 90% clinoptilolite), bentonite (of > 83% montmorillonite), and small amounts of activated charcoal, on performance, hematological, serum, and liver biochemical parameters, as well as organ weights and meat quality in broiler chickens. Hypocalcaemia In Ossimi Sheep Associated With Feeding On Beet Tops (Beta Vulgaris), Sabry El-Khodery, Mohamed El-Boshy, Khalid Gaafar, Abdelbaset Elmashad

Hypocalcemia was diagnosed in 48 Ossimi ewes in a flock of 125 sheep. Clinical signs, feed analysis, biochemical findings, and response to treatment were used for diagnosis. Lactating ewes were more frequently affected (56.25%) than pregnant (33.33%) and dry non-pregnant (10.41%) ewes. Teeth grinding, voiding soft pellets, absence of recumbency, non-tympanic rumen, dry mouth, and thin body condition were atypical findings. Ruminal fluid analysis showed significant increases of potassium and ammonia (P < 0.05), and a significant decrease of magnesium (P < 0.05) in diseased ewes, as compared with clinically normal ewes. Serum calcium, magnesium, and glucose in the diseased ewes were significantly lower (P < 0.001), (P < 0.01), (P < 0.05) than in clinically normal and control ewes, respectively; however, there was a significant increase of acetone (P < 0.01). In all, 2 ewes were slaughtered due to the failure to respond to treatment and only the kidneys had gross abnormality. Histopathological examination showed degenerative changes in the renal tubules, with deposition of calcium oxalate crystals. The results of this study indicate that the clinical syndrome of hypocalcemia and renal failure occurred in Ossimi sheep that feed on beet tops. The observed atypical signs of hypocalcemia highlight the importance of examining serum and ruminal fluid to determine the proper intervention.

The clinical and haematological findings in dairy cattle with naturally infected bovine immunodeficiency virus (BIV) infection were evaluated. Thirty-seven (12.3%) out of 300 cattle that had previously been found positive for BIV infection were monitored. Thirty-seven BIV-free cattle selected from BIV-positive herds were used as a control group. Routine clinical and haematological parameters were recorded 6 times, at 1-month intervals. This study is aimed to detect Coxiella burnetii in cattle by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). A total of 138 cattle blood samples were collected from 8 farms and then examined in laboratory conditions. The examination of Coxiella burnetii was carried out by PCR with specific primers. In this study, a total of 6 (4.3%) cattle serum samples were found PCR positive for Coxiella burnetii. This result proves that cattle are an important reservoir of Coxiella burnetii infection.

The microbial flora of the liver, gills, intestine, and muscle of epizootic ulcerative syndrome (EUS) infected murrel Channa striatus in Tirunelveli, Tamilnadu was estimated quantitatively and qualitatively, and the isolates were identified at genus and species level. Total viable microbial count was measured as highest range in gills (5.9 ± 0.5 x 10^7 CFU (colony forming units) g^{-1}) and lowest range in intestine (8.7 ± 1.8 x 10^4 CFU g^{-1}). During an enterotoxaemia outbreak, 9 out of 11 (82%) Chinkara deer (Gazella bennettii) died; 5 animals died of peracute disease, whereas acute death was observed in 4 animals. The case fatality rate was 100%. Clinical signs, including high temperature, depression, anorexia, abdominal pain, greenish watery diarrhoea, and respiratory distress, were recorded in the affected deer. Post-mortem examinations of the affected animals revealed muscular and serosal haemorrhages, hydroperitoneum, hydrothorax, and hydropericardium. Severe haemorrhages were also observed in the small intestine, colon, and kidneys. Avian encephalomyelitis virus (AEV) is an important pathogen of poultry and is classified as a member of picornaviridae. Nearly all chicken flocks eventually become infected with the virus, but the incidence of clinical disease is very low unless a breeder flock is not vaccinated and becomes infected after the commencement of egg production. Burkholderia cepacia and Aeromonas hydrophila infections are described in an African Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus erithacus) that presented with neurological signs, lassitude, and respiratory distress. At postmortem examination, subperiosteal ecchymotic hemorrhages in the skull, and severe subcutaneous edema in the neck and abdomen were prominent. Round, disseminated, whitish necrotic foci were noted in the congested liver. Microscopic examination revealed chromatolysis in brain neurons. Multifocal coagulation necroses were found in the liver. Non-purulent, subacute myocarditis, thromboembolic nephritis, and interstitial pneumonia were observed. Microbiological examination revealed mixed cultures of Burkholderia cepacia and Aeromonas hydrophila in brain, lung, liver, kidney, and heart samples.

The newest measures for the control of harmful rodent populations are from the anticoagulant rodenticide group, which are divided into 2 subgroups: first and second generations, and indandione derivatives. Non-target organisms are potentially at risk of direct consumption of baits (primary hazard) and of eating poisoned rodents (secondary hazard). Anticoagulant rodenticides inhibit the enzyme vitamin K-dependent carboxylase and thus impair the reactivation of vitamin K1, indirectly affecting physiological blood coagulation. The effects of gamma irradiation on microbial quality, lipid oxidation, and sensory characteristics of meatballs were studied, and these effects were compared with the effects on ground beef. Meat samples were irradiated at 0, 3, 6, and 9 kGy, then stored at 4 ± 1 ºC for 14 days. Irradiation resulted in greater microbial inactivation, lower lipid oxidation, and less adverse effects on sensory characteristics in meatballs compared to ground beef. Variance components, genetic parameters, and breeding values for birth weight in Brown Swiss cattle reared in Bahri Dağdaş International Agricultural Research Institute were estimated by REML-BLUP procedures using MTDFREML computer programme. Six different animal models were fitted for the trait ranging from a simple to the most comprehensive model. The most detailed model (model 6) provided the best fit to the used dataset. The aim of this study was to calculate the feather and down production by native Turkish geese and to investigate the effects on these traits. In total 145 native Turkish geese were used in the experiment. The birds were divided into 4 groups according to their feather colour at 10 and 12 weeks of ages. They were individually weighed and measured with the help of wing tags. Geese at 10 weeks had heavier feathers than those at 12 weeks, while geese at 12 weeks produced more down (P < 0.01). As detected in down weight, the older group has a greater amount of total feathers than the younger group (P < 0.001). Male geese produced significantly heavier feathers and down than females (P < 0.05). While black geese produced the heaviest feathers, yellow geese produced the heaviest down (P < 0.05). White geese generated the lightest weights of the products. The strongest correlation was found between total feather yield and chest girth (0.75). Reasonable correlations were detected between liveweight and other traits (0.36-0.62). This is not a widely studied subject in Turkey; therefore, the data obtained can be used for the identification of native Turkish geese.

The present study was carried out to determine the seroprevalence of toxoplasmosis and leishmaniosis among Kangal dogs on breeding farms in Sivas, Turkey. Serum samples from 50 Kangal dogs without clinical symptoms of disease were tested for anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies with the Sabin Feldman Dye Test (SFDT) and for anti-Leishmania antibodies with the Indirect Fluorescent Antibody Test (IFAT). Forty-six out of the 50 dogs were seropositive for Toxoplasma gondii, with titers ranging from 1:16 to 1:1024. Alleles of physiological candidate genes for reproductive traits, insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), and growth hormone receptor (GHR) were assessed to determine their associations with total egg production (NE), average days of continual egg-laying (ADCE), and number of double yolk eggs (DYE) in Wenchang chickens (Chinese indigenous breed). PCR-RFLP was used for genotype identification. The frequency of restriction enzyme C1/C2 alleles in the population was 0.53 (C1) and 0.47 (C2) for IGF-1. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of canine ectoparasite infestation in pet dogs from the Shiraz area of southern Iran, with no known exposure to insecticides. In all, 160 dogs were examined for ectoparasites in each of the 4 seasons and samples were collected. The most common ectoparasite was Ctenocephalides canis, which infested 22 of the 160 dogs. Pulex irritans was identified on 2 of the dogs and 142 Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks were found on 13 dogs. A total of 1500 serum samples were collected from cattle, buffaloes, and humans. The Rose Bengal plate test (RBPT) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) detected Brucella antibodies in 56 (10.18%) and 44 (8%) of the cattle, respectively. In samples collected from buffaloes 9.38% and 6.92% were positive, whereas 14% and 11% of the samples from humans were found to be positive by RBPT and ELISA, respectively.
