Background Chlamydophila (Chlamydia) pneumoniae is an intracellular bacterium that has been identified within cells in areas of neuropathology found in Alzheimer disease (AD), including endothelia, glia, and neurons. Depending on the cell type of the host, infection by C. pneumoniae has been shown to influence apoptotic pathways in both pro- and anti-apoptotic fashions. We have hypothesized that persistent chlamydial infection of neurons may be an important mediator of the characteristic neuropathology observed in AD brains. Chronic and/or persistent infection of neuronal cells with C. pneumoniae in the AD brain may affect apoptosis in cells containing chlamydial inclusions.

Are Successful Applicants To The Roman Catholic Deaconate Psychologically Healthy?, Thomas G. Plante, Kathleen Lackey

Psychology

The current investigation evaluated psychological and personality profiles of successful applicants to the deaconate in several Roman Catholic dioceses in California. The MMPI-2 and 16PF were administered to 25 applicants between 2004 and 2006 who subsequently entered the permanent deaconate program. Results indicate that these applicants to the deaconate were generally well-adjusted as well as being socially responsible. Findings also suggest some tendency for defensiveness, repression, naivete, and a strong need for affection, as well as for being emotionally stable, genuine, and cooperative.

Coarticulation is the kinematic and spectral overlap between adjacent sounds during speech production. Coarticulation patterns in typical adults have been well established; however, the manner in which coarticulation is developed in children is still unclear. Research has provided conflicting views, showing that children exhibit more, less, or an equal degree of coarticulation when compared to adult speakers. Perimenopausal high estrogen levels amplify the social stress of changing reproductive status in a culture that places value on women’s youth and beauty. As it was realized that progesterone physiologically counterbalances the effects of estrogen, it would be better to use progesterone, rather than estrogen for appropriate therapy of perimenopause. Based on this new knowledge was designed a three-arm study project comparing the recommended therapy, low dose OC (oral contraceptives) against progesterone therapy. Di Indonesia, angka kematian ibu (AKI) masih tinggi jika dibanding dengan negara-negara ASEAN. Penyebab utama kematian ibu adalah komplikasi obstetri yang merupakan penyulit atau penyakit yang timbul pada waktu kehamilan, persalinan dan pasca persalinan. Di Indonesia, komplikasi obstetri (20% dari seluruh ibu hamil) masih sangat tinggi, sementara yang mampu ditangani hanya sekitar 10%. Migraine headache is a highly prevalent, chronic, episodic disorder that is associated with high direct and indirect costs. Migraine headache impacts not only patients, but also their employers due to substantial decreases in workplace productivity. Background: Rehabilitation programs designed to develop skill in upper extremity (UE) function after stroke require progressive practice that engage and challenge the learner. Virtual realty (VR) provides a unique environment where the presentation of stimuli can be controlled systematically for optimal challenge by adapting task difficulty as performance improves. We describe four VR tasks that were developed and tested to improve arm and hand movement skills for individuals with hemiparesis. The intracellular signaling molecule, cyclic-di-GMP (c-di-GMP), has been shown to influence bacterial behaviors, including motility and biofilm formation. We report the identification and characterization of PA4367, a gene involved in regulating surface-associated behaviors in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The PA4367 gene encodes a protein with an EAL domain, associated with c-di-GMP phosphodiesterase activity, as well as a GGDEF domain, which is associated with a c-di-GMP-synthesizing diguanylate cyclase activity. Deletion of the PA4367 gene results in a severe defect in swarming motility and a hyperbiofilm phenotype; thus, we designate this gene bifA, for biofilm formation. We consider estimating the effect of hemoglobin variability on mortality in hemodialysis patients. Causal effects can be defined as comparisons of outcomes under different hypothetical interventions. Defining measures of the effect of hemoglobin variability and clinical outcomes is complicated by the fact that hypothetical interventions on variability used to define its effect inevitably involve manipulation of related variables. We propose a model-based definition of the effect of the hemoglobin variability as a parameter for variability in a causal model for the effect of an overall intervention on hemoglobin levels over time. Many experiments performed in somatosensory research rely upon measuring or estimating the force at which an animal lifts its paw in response to a punctate mechanical stimulus. While mechanical stimulators are now available, the vast majority of methods utilize a series of nylon monofilaments (modern renditions of “von Frey hairs” i.e., Wynnes Symmes filaments, Stoelting Corp), each of which produces a characteristic force (Bove et al 2003). Stroke is cerebrovascular injury that has been reported to be the third leading cause of death and the first leading cause of disability in the world (W. H.O. 2007). Currently, there is only one FDA approved treatment for stroke which is recombinant tissue plasminogen activator. This treatment has a narrow therapeutic window of three hours after ischemic stroke and can adversely cause the production of oxygen free radicals and intracranial hemorrhage. These limitations result in only 2-3% of all stroke victims as being candidates for this therapy as many patients do not arrive at the hospital in time to receive …

We did cross-sectional surveys in Kwale District, Kenya to determine the epidemiology of bovine trypanosomosis and livestock owners' perceptions of the disease. The surveys involved relative importance of trypanosomosis, examination of the current disease constraints, current control practices and drug-use patterns. Informal meetings were held with farmers and cattle census undertaken. Tsetse-fly densities and trypanosomosis prevalences in cattle were determined. A total of 132 farmers were interviewed. Trypanosomosis, anaplasmosis, East Coast fever, foot-and-mouth diseases were reported to be the major constraints to livestock production. Trypanosomosis was the most important compared to other diseases. Chemotherapy was the most widely used method …
