Effect Of Feeding Supplemental Tallow On The Performance Of Lactating Nili-Ravi Buffaloes, Haq Nawaz, Muhammad Yaqoob, Muhammad Abdullah

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In order to determine the feeding value of tallow for lactating Nili-Ravi buffaloes, 4 buffaloes were fed 0%, 2%, 4%, or 6% tallow in a 4 X 4 Latin square experiment. The intakes of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), acid detergent fiber (ADF), and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) decreased (P < 0.01), but the intakes of ether extract (EE) (P < 0.01) and digestible energy (DE) (P < 0.05) increased with increasing levels of tallow in the diets. Intake of net energy for lactation (NE_L) did not differ (P < 0.01) with varying levels of supplemental tallow. Daily milk yield increased (P < 0.01) from 11.00 to 13.2 kg/day. Production of 4% fat corrected milk (FCM), solid corrected milk (SCM), and energy corrected milk (ECM) increased quadratically (P < 0.05) with the increasing level of tallow in the diets. Milk fat content and total milk fat increased linearly (P < 0.01) and quadratically (P < 0.05), respectively, as the level of tallow in the diet increased. There was no difference in protein and lactose content due to feeding tallow. Total solid content increased quadratically (P < 0.05) from 16.45% to 17.67% but solid not fat (SNF) percentages did not vary with varying levels of tallow. The gross energy (GE) of the milk increased from 1096 to 1160 Kcal/kg (P < 0.01) with increasing levels of tallow in the diets. Energetic efficiency of milk production improved in a quadratic (P < 0.05) manner with 2%, 4%, and 6% tallow, with the highest being 47.6% with 4% supplemental tallow. The proportion of C_{8:0} to C_{16:1} fatty acids (FA) decreased from 53.66% to 35.52%, whereas the concentration of C_{18:0} to C_{20:0} increased (44.93% to 62.84%) in the milk fat of buffaloes fed diets containing different levels of tallow. Gains in body weight (BW) were higher (P < 0.05) in buffaloes fed diets containing supplemental tallow as compared to those fed the control diet. This study suggests that tallow up to 6% of diet DM is a suitable fat supplement as an economical energy source for lactating buffaloes.

Investigation Of Some Biochemical Parameters And The Antioxidant System In Calves With Dermatophytosis, Mahmut Karapehli̇van, Erdoğan Uzlu, Necati̇ Kaya, Orhan Kankavi̇, Kerem Ural, Mehmet Çi̇ti̇l

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The study included 10 clinically healthy calves (group 1) and 10 clinical cases of dermatophytosis (group 2). The influence of dermatophytosis on some serum biochemical profiles and the antioxidant system was investigated. Serum malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), uric acid, nitric oxide (NO), total sialic acid (TSA), lipid-bound sialic acid (LBSA), total protein (TP), and albumin levels were measured in groups 1 and 2. Calves in group 2 had significantly higher (P < 0.001) MDA, NO, TSA, and LBSA levels, and a higher P < 0.01 TSA:TP ratio; however, GSH and uric acid levels were significantly lower (P < 0.001). There was no significant difference between the groups in total protein and albumin. These findings suggest a relationship between dermatophytosis, the antioxidant system, and lipid oxidation.

Kenya: Begin Community Dialogue On Fgm/C By Discussing Cultural Justification, Frontiers In Reproductive Health

Reproductive Health

Female genital cutting is strongly supported among the Somali ethnic community in Kenya, and the severest form (infibulation) is primarily practiced. This type of cut is associated with increased incidence and seriousness of obstetric and gynecological problems relative to uncut women and those with less severe forms of FGM/C. As stated in this brief, efforts to encourage abandonment should begin with community discussion about the socio-cultural reasons for cutting. Simultaneously, health-care providers need training in how to manage complications of FGM/C. In 2004, FRONTIERS collaborated with UNICEF on a four-month diagnostic study on FGM/C practices among the Somali community in …

Human apolipoprotein B mRNA editing enzyme, catalytic polypeptide-like 3 (Apobec3) antiretroviral factors cause hypermutation of proviral DNA leading to degradation or replication-incompetent HIV-1. However, HIV-1 viral infectivity factor (Vif) suppresses Apobec3 activity through the Cullin 5-Elongin B-Elongin C E3 ubiquitin ligase complex. We examined the effect of genetic polymorphisms in the CUL5 gene (encoding Cullin 5 protein) on AIDS disease progression in five HIV-1 longitudinal cohorts. A total of 12 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) spanning 93 kb in the CUL5 locus were genotyped and their haplotypes inferred. A phylogenetic network analysis revealed that CUL5 haplotypes were grouped into two clusters …

ETSU Faculty Works

The management of speech impairment of unknown origin in children requires SLPs to make important clinical decisions around assessment, analysis, diagnosis and intervention. Ideally, clinicians should be guided in their decision making by evidence. Over thirty years ago, this was a relatively straightforward task. Most children’s speech problems were assessed, analysed and treated from an articulation perspective. Since the paradigm shift from articulation to phonology, clinical decision making has become more challenging. This challenge is in part due to the increase in possible approaches. This short course will outline the application of ten intervention approaches to one child and will …

A Statistical Taxonomy And Another “Chance” For Natural Frequencies, Adrien Barton, Shabnam Mousavi, Jeffrey R. Stevens

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Commentary on Barbey & Sloman: "Base-rate respect"

The conclusions of Barbey & Sloman (B&S) crucially depend on evidence for different representations of statistical information. Unfortunately, a muddled distinction made among these representations calls into question the authors’ conclusions. We clarify some notions of statistical representations which are often confused in the literature. These clarifications, combined with new empirical evidence, do not support a dual-process model of judgment.

Personal Values As A Mediator Between Parent And Peer Expectations And Adolescent Behaviors, Laura M. Padilla-Walker, Gustavo Carlo Jan 2007

Personal Values As A Mediator Between Parent And Peer Expectations And Adolescent Behaviors, Laura M. Padilla-Walker, Gustavo Carlo

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The current study examined the mediating role of adolescents’ personal values on the relation between maternal and peer expectations for prosocial behaviors and adolescents’ self-reported prosocial and antisocial behaviors. One hundred thirty-four adolescents (mean age = 16.22 years, 54% girls) completed measures of their own values and behaviors, as well as their perceptions of the positive expectations that their mother and their best friend(s) had for their (the adolescents’) prosocial behaviors. Stepwise regression analyses suggested that adolescents’ personal prosocial values mediated the relation between adolescents’ perceptions of both maternal and peer expectations and adolescents’ prosocial behaviors. In addition, for boys, …

“Introduction” To Modeling Complex Systems: Volume 52 Of The Nebraska Symposium On Motivation, Bill Shuart, William D. Spaulding, Jeffrey Poland

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Capturing the complexity of human behavior has been a recurring theme in the Nebraska Symposium on Motivation:
We expect behavior to be patterned or integrated, and to make biological sense; and so patterning and biological utility are what we see. And of course what we see is actually there-behavior in general is not chaotic; it is organized. (Nissen, 1954, p. 314)
When fundamental psychologists do make excursions into the human motivational world ... it is rare that they survey the requirements for theory or pre-theory by intensive descriptive analysis of behavior related to such motives as produced by concrete human …

National Security And Environmental Laws: A Clear And Present Danger?, Hope M. Babcock

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Without question, life in the United States has changed significantly since September 11, 2001. The attacks launched from within the United States in broad daylight against non-military targets and innocent civilians, followed by the intentional dispersal of the biological agent anthrax, ushered in an era of uncertainty and fear in this country unlike any in recent memory. The visible manifestations of this fear are still with us--concrete barriers and the closing of public spaces around public buildings, heightened security at airports and train stations subjecting people to invasive searches of their persons and belongings, the sudden, seemingly random appearance of …
