While some research has examined how parental expectations affect educational achievement, there is very little known about how parental expectations affect the development of coping skills and adaptive and maladaptive psychosocial functions. Participants were asked to complete a measure of their abilities in academics, sports, leadership, honesty, responsibilities, among other things. Then, they completed a measure of what they perceived their parents’ expectations of those areas were. Lastly, they completed the Behavioral Assessment System for Children-College Self Report of Personality form as a measure of adaptive and maladaptive functioning. The United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) Microbial Limits Test and Preservative Effectiveness Test were validated and completed on an alcohol-free mouthwash using standard USP recommended microorganisms and selected organisms isolated from the manufacturing environment. The microbial limits test using environmental isolates was found equivalent to the USP Microbial Limits Test currently used for release of the product. The preservative effectiveness test was performed to determine the efficacy of the parabens system against environmental isolates compared to those recommended in the USP test. In both tests Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates exhibited resistance to the preservative system. All other isolates failed to grow after …

Aging Influences Multiple Indices Of Oxidative Stress In The Heart Of The Fischer 344/Nnia X Brown Norway/Binia Rat, Shinichi Asano

Here we report the influence of aging on multiple markers of oxidativenitrosative stress in the heart of adult (6-month), aged (30-month) and very aged (36- month) Fischer 344/NNiaHSd X Brown Norway/BiNia (F344/NXBN) rats. Compared to 6 month old rat hearts, indices of oxidative (superoxide anion (–O2 ·), 4-hyrdoxy-2- nonenal (4-HNE)) and nitrosative (protein nitrotyrosylation) stress were 34.1 ± 28.1%, 186 ± 28.1% and 94 ± 5.8% higher, respectively, in 36-month hearts and these findings were highly correlated with increases in left ventricular wall thickness (r>0.669; r>0.710 and p<0.01, respectively). Regression analysis showed that increases in cardiac oxidative-nitrosative stress with aging were significantly correlated with changes in the expression and/or regulation of proteins involved in transcriptional (NF-κB) activities, signaling (mitogen activated protein kinases along with Src), apoptotic ( Bcl-2, Traf-2), and cellular stress (HSPs). These results suggest that the aging F344/NXBN heart may be highly suited for unraveling the molecular events that lead to age-associated alterations in cardiac oxidative stress.

As a result, the American Dietetic Association recently established a task force to develop and implement a Preceptor Training Certificate Program. There is, however, limited information with regard to formal preceptor training currently being offered by dietetic internships and the affect it may have on programs. Increased muscle loading results in phosphorylation of the 70 kDa ribosomal S6 kinase (p70s6k) signaling pathway and this event strongly correlates with degree of muscle adaptation following resistance exercise. Here, we compared the basal and contraction- induced phosphorylation of p70s6k, Akt and mTOR in tibialis anterior muscles of lean and obese Zucker rats. Immunoblotting demonstrated differences in level of basal p70S6k phosphorylation (Thr 389) in the normal and diabetic TA. HFES had an increase in p70S6k (Thr389) phosphorylation at 0-, 1- and 3-hr in lean TA and only at 3-hr in obese TA. mTOR (Ser 2448) Phosphorylation was elevated in …

There are few effective agents that safely remove excess iron from iron-overloaded individuals. Our goal was to evaluate the iron-removing effectiveness of acetaminophen given ip or orally in the gerbil iron-overload model. Male gerbils were divided into 5 groups: saline controls, iron-overloaded controls, iron-overloaded treated with ip acetaminophen, iron-overloaded treated with oral acetaminophen, and iron-overloaded treated with ipdeferoxamine. Iron dextran was injected iptwice/wk for 8 wk. Acetaminophen and deferoxamine treatments were given on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays during the same 8 wk and continued for 4 wk after completion of iron-overloading. The mechanism of heel pressure ulcers after hip surgery is not entirely understood. The purpose of this one-group, prospective, repeated-measures design study was to examine how the external pressure of the bed surface affects heel skin oxygen tension in adults on the first 3 days after hip surgery. Transcutaneous oxygen sensors were placed on the plantar surface of each foot, close to the heels. Measures were taken on room air and with an oxygen challenge with the heels (1) suspended above the bed surface (preload), (2) on the bed surface for 15 minutes (loading), and (3) again suspended above the …

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)-associated stigma is pervasive throughout the world. This stigma affects the ability of HIV-positive individuals to cope with their illness and it also affects behaviors around sexual practices, disclosure to others and the use of healthcare. The purpose of the research project was to examine the experience of internalized stigma among HIV-positive persons and their perceptions of stigmatizing attitudes in the community. The study also examined disclosure of HIV serostatus and identified factors contributing to disclosure and stigma in Senegal, a low prevalence Muslim country in West Africa. Glutamate transporters have a homotrimeric subunit structure with a large central water-filled cavity that extends partially into the plane of the lipid bilayer (Yernool et al., 2004). In addition to uptake of glutamate, the transporters also mediate a chloride conductance that is increased in the presence of substrate. Whether the chloride channel is located in the central pore of the trimer or within the individual subunits has been controversial. We find that coexpression of wild-type neuronal glutamate transporter EAAT3 subunits with subunits mutated at R447, a residue governing substrate selectivity (Bendahan et al., 2000), results in …

Last spring, North America was gripped in the largest pet food recall in history. News outlets reported tens of thousands of dogs and cats becoming ill, and many dying, as a result of ingesting contaminated pet food. Several pet owners have filed lawsuits against the manufacturers and distributors of the pet food products. I think this is an excellent real-life science story to use with students to show science investigation in action, and to discuss the intersections between the role of regulatory agencies and the public.

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

Mycobacterium bovis, the causative agent of bovine tuberculosis (bTB), is endemic in free-ranging white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in 5 counties (Alcona, Alpena, Montmorency, Oscoda, and Presque Isle) in the northeastern Lower Peninsula of Michigan, USA. The presence of a wildlife reservoir of tuberculosis in Michigan and the incidence of bTB in cattle (Bos taurus) resulted in Michigan losing its bTB accredited-free status. Subsequent wildlife surveillance programs identified relatively high disease prevalence in coyotes (Canis latrans), generating interest in their potential to serve as a sentinel species to detect bTB prevalence in white-tailed deer. …

It is now a matter of routine for the forensic scientist to obtain the genetic profile of an individual from DNA recovered from a biological stain deposited at a crime scene. Potential contributors of the stain must either be known to investigators (i.e. a developed suspect) or the questioned profile must be searched against a database of DNA profiles such as those maintained in the CODIS National DNA database. However, in those instances where there is no developed suspect and no match is obtained after interrogation of appropriate DNA databases, the DNA profile per se presently provides no meaningful information …

Background

Ankle sprains are common injuries that often lead to functional ankle instability (FAI), which is a pathology defined by sensations of instability at the ankle and recurrent ankle sprain injury. Poor postural stability has been associated with FAI, and sports medicine clinicians rehabilitate balance deficits to prevent ankle sprains. Subsensory electrical noise known as stochastic resonance (SR) stimulation has been used in conjunction with coordination training to improve dynamic postural instabilities associated with FAI. บทความนี้เป็นรายงานผู้ป่วยหนึ่งรายที่มีถุงน้ําเดนเจอรัส เกิดร่วมกับฟันตัดซี่ข้างบนซ้ายและฟันเขี้ยว บนซ้าย ผู้ป่วยรายนี้เป็นเด็กชายไทย อายุ 8 ปี ซึ่งมีอาการบวมตึงที่กระดูกขากรรไกรบนด้านซ้าย บริเวณกระดูก เบ้าฟันตั้งแต่ฟันตัดกลางบนซ้ายจนถึงฟันกรามน้อยซี่ที่หนึ่งบนซ้าย และได้รับการรักษาโดยถอนฟันน้ํานมที่เป็นฟันตัดขี่ข้างบนซ้าย ฟันน้ํานมที่เป็นฟันเขี้ยวบนซ้าย และผ่าตัดควักถุงน้ําออกทั้งหมดพร้อมกับถอนฟันตัด ข้างบนซ้าย ซึ่งลอยอยู่ในถุงน้ําและฟันเขี้ยวบนซ้ายซึ่งยึดติดกับผนังของถุงน้ํา ไม่พบการกลับเป็นซ้ําของถุงน้ํา หลังติดตามผลเป็นเวลา 1 ปี เมื่อตรวจทางภาพรังสี ถุงน้ําเดนเจอรัสในผู้ป่วยรายนี้ น่าจะมีสาเหตุจากการกระจาย การติดเชื้อเรื้อรังของฟันน้ํานม การรักษาการติดเชื้อของฟันน้ํานมด้วยการรักษาโพรงประสาทฟัน หรือการถอนฟันจะสามารถควบคุมมิให้เกิดถุงน้ําของฟันแท้ที่อยู่ใต้ฟันน้ํานมนั้นได้ (ว ทันต จุฬาฯ 2550;30:43-50)
