The "Scanopreg", an ultrasonic machine for diagnosing pregnancy in sheep, is effective as early as eight to nine weeks of pregnancy, and could therefore be a useful management tool.

Growth Rate Of Thoroughbreds: Effect Of Age Of Dam, Year And Month Of Birth, And Sex Of Foal, R. L. Hintz, H. F. Hintz, L. Dale Van Vleck

Weight, height, and cannon bone measurements were obtained on 1,992 Thoroughbred foals. Colts were heavier than fillies at birth and the differences increased with age. Dams under 7 years of age and older than 11 years had foals of lighter weight at birth than mares 7 to 11 years of age and the differences persisted at 510 days of age. Foals born in April, May, or June were heavier than foals born in January, February, or March. Year of birth also influenced body weight. The trends for height at withers and cannon circumference were similar to those of body weight.

ในปี 2521-2522 โรงพยาบาลปศุสัตว์ คณะสัตวแพทยศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์ มหาวิทยาลัย ต.บ่อพลับ อ.เมือง จ.นครปฐม ได้แก้ไขแม่สุกร ซึ่งไม่สามารถคลอดได้ เนื่องจากเกิดไส้เลื่อนบริเวณกัน จำนวน 5 ราย โดยวิธีผ่าเอาลูกออกทางหน้าท้อง ร่วมกับการแก้ไขบริเวณที่เกิดไส้เลื่อนประสบความสำเร็จ 3 ราย และ 2 ราย ตาย หลังการผ่าตัด การช่วยเหลือทางศัลยกรรมจะสําเร็จได้ดีหรือไม่ ขึ้นอยู่กับสภาพสัตว์ และระยะเวลาของการเกิดไส้เลื่อน Five cases of dystocia in sow due to perineal hernia were presented at Farm Animal Hospital, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn University, Nakornpathom Province during 1978-1979. Three of them were successfully treated by Caesarean section and perineal reparation.

ได้ทำการศึกษาการคลอดยากของสุกรในเขตจังหวัดนครปฐม จำนวน 110 แม่ โดยแบ่งหัวข้อการศึกษาเป็น 2 ลักษณะ คือ หาสาเหตุและวิธีการแก้ไขการคลอดยาก ผลการศึกษาพบว่า สาเหตุของการคลอดยากส่วนใหญ่เกิดในสุกรท้องแรก มีลูกระหว่าง 6-10 ตัวต่อครอก มดลูกไม่บีบตัว และท่าคลอดของลูกผิดปกติ การแก้ไขการคลอดยากใช้วิธีแก้ไขท่าคลอดของลูกให้ปกติ และดึงออก One-hundred and ten cases of swine dystocia in Nakorn-pathom area were studied in two aspects. Firstly, the incidences were divided according to the number of pregnancy, number of piglets, maternal and fetal factor. Most of them were first pregnant sows, six to ten piglets per litter, uterine inertia and malpositioning of the fetus, respectively. Secondly, the handling of the dystocia were mostly correction and traction.

การผสมเทียมสุกรด้วยน้ำเชื้อแช่แข็ง (Artificial Insemination In Swine Using Frozen Semen), พีระศักดิ์ จันทร์ประทีป

การผสมเทียมสุกรด้วยน้ำเชื้อแช่แข็งแบ่งออกได้ 6 ขั้นตอนคือ 1. การรีดน้ำเชื้อ 2. การเตรียมน้ำเชื้อก่อนการแช่แข็ง 3. การแช่แข็ง 4. การละลายและการเจือจางของน้ำเชื้อ 5. การผสม 6. การประเมินผล การรีดน้ำเชื้อพ่อสุกรเพื่อใช้แช่แข็งนั้น ต้องคัดเลือกให้ได้พอสุกรที่เหมาะสม รีดเก็บเอาน้ำเชื้อเฉพาะส่วนที่มีตัวอสุจิมาก การเตรียมน้ำเชื้อก่อนการแช่แข็งอาจใช้ seminal plasma 20% ส่วนน้ำยาละลายมักใช้ 2-3 ชนิดที่แตกต่างกันทั้งนี้คำนึงถึงส่วนประกอบ tonicity, pH นอกจากนี้มีนม ไข่แดง adjuvants ต่าง ๆ และกลีเซอรีนร่วมด้วย ส่วนขั้นตอน เพื่อ ทําให้น้ำเชื้อเย็นลงก่อนการแช่แข็ง คือ การเก็บระยะแรกหลังการรีด ต่อจากนั้นทำให้ เย็นลงแล้วเจือจาง ปั่นเหวี่ยง ครั้งแรกขณะทำให้เย็นลงแล้ว ทำให้มีจำนวนตัวอสุจิตาม ความต้องการ การแช่แข็งอย่างรวดเร็วทำให้ตัวอสุจิไม่ได้รับผลกระทบกระเทือนจากน้ำยาละลายที่เป็น hypertonic น้ำเชื้ออาจทำเป็นเม็ด (granules) pellets หรือ straw เป็นต้น แล้วเก็บไว้ที่ 100 ซ. การละลายและการเจือจางซ้ำ และการละลายต้องทำอย่างรวดเร็วด้วยน้ำยาละลายที่อุ่น การผสมนั้นจำเป็นต้องตรวจการเป็นสัดก่อน การผสม 2 ครั้ง ได้ผลดี กว่าครั้งเดียว ส่วนการประเมินผลอาจคิดจากการไม่กลับเป็นสัด หรือจากการฆ่าตรวจ รอจนคลอดตลอดจนขนาดของครอก. รายงานการแก้ไขแม่สุกรท้องแก่ ซึ่งเกิดการปลิ้นออกของกระเพาะปัสสาวะก่อนคลอดโดยการผ่าตัดเอาลูกออกทางหน้าท้อง พร้อมกับนำกระเพาะปัสสาวะกลับ สู่ช่องท้องตามรอยฉีกขาดของช่องคลอด แม่สุกรปลอดภัย ลูกสุกร 7 ตัวแข็งแรงดี และ หย่านมเมื่ออายุได้ 35 วัน A case of urinary bladder prolapse in late pregnant sow was reported. Caesarean section and replacement of urinary bladder were successfully done. Seven healthy piglets weaned at 35 days after the operation.

รายงานการตัดทวารหนักปลิ้นซึ่งมีการฉีกขาดในสุกรโดยวิธียึดทวารหนักส่วนที่ดีด้วยเข็มยาว 2 เล่มซึ่งแทงตั้งฉากกันโดยให้ทะลุทวารหนัก และใช้ท่อปลาสติด ซึ่งสอดผ่านรูทวารหนัก สุกรหายเป็นปกติดี หลังการผ่าตัดแก้ไข A simplified technique to fix the prolapsed rectum in pig using plastic tube and needles before amputation of the lacerated part was reported.

การศึกษาความดันเลือดและอัตราชีพจรในวัวเนื้อและวัวนม, สมศักดิ์ บวรสิน

ศึกษาความดันเลือดและอัตราชีพจรในลูกวัวเนื้อ และวัวนมพันธุ์ผสมอายุ 1-2 ปี จำนวน 39 ตัว ศึกษาความดันเลือดโดยการฟัง (auscultation) และอัตรา ชีพจรโดยการคลํา (palpation) จากหลอดเลือดแดงใต้โคนหาง (middle coccygeal artery) ทุกวัน จำนวน 5 ครั้ง พบว่าความดัน systolic ของวัวเนื้อมีค่า 141.86 ±0.55 มม.ปรอท และของวัวนมมีค่า 147.85 ± 0.33 มม.ปรอท ซึ่งแตกต่างกันอย่างมี นัยสําคัญ สำหรับความดัน diastolic ของวัวเนื้อคือ 111.81 ±0.77 และของวัวนม 112.80 ±0.78 มม.ปรอท นั้นไม่มีความแตกต่างกันทางสถิติ อัตราชีพจรของวัวเนื้อมี ค่าเฉลี่ย 84.85 ±0.74 ครั้ง/นาที ต่ำกว่าของวัวนมซึ่งมีค่าเฉลี่ย 96.10 + 0.68 ครั้ง/นาทีอย่างมีนัยสำคัญ ในการเปรียบเทียบความแตกต่างของความดัน systolic และ diastolic และอัตราชีพจรในกลุ่มวัวเนื้อ โดยเปรียบเทียบจากลูกผสมพ่อพันธุ์ Santa Gurtrudis กับลูกผสมพ่อพันธุ์ Brahman และเปรียบเทียบระหว่างเพศ ไม่ปรากฏว่าแตกต่างกัน สําหรับวัวนมได้เปรียบเทียบความเข้มข้นของสายพันธุ์ที่มีเลือดต่างประเทศ พบว่าลูกวัวที่มี เลือดพันธุ์ต่างประเทศน้อยกว่า 50% มีความดัน diastolic สูงกว่ากลุ่มที่มีเลือดมากกว่า 50% แต่ความดัน systolic และอัตราชีพจรไม่แตกต่างกัน เมื่อเปรียบเทียบลูกผสมที่มี เลือดพ่อพันธุ์ Red Sindhi กับ Holstein Friesian ทั้งความดัน systolic และ diastolic และอัตราชีพจรไม่แตกต่างกัน

While it may be regarded by some as inhumane or unethical to take any life, mankind, as responsible stewards of animals, is obliged to do so for many reasons: for food, health, population control, to alleviate incurable suffering, etc. Yet beyond the ironies and ethical dilemmas of the right to life versus the right to take life, lies the necessity to destroy life. This entails an enormous ethical responsibility relevant to the times, and also the moral injunction that the method of killing be humane, in other words, causing the least possible distress, physically and psychologically.
