Apparent Nutrient Digestibility Of Balanced Diets With Soy Bean Extract Or Meat And Bone Meal In The Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus L.) Infected With Vibrio Anguillarum, Kenan Engi̇n, Ferbal Özkan
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus L., infected with Vibrio anguillarum or not infected were fed balanced diets containing vegetal (solvent extracted soy bean meal (SBM)) or animal (meat and bone meal (MBM)) protein sources in order to demonstrate the apparent nutrient and energy digestibility. Regardless of protein sources in the diets, feed intake was lower in the infected group. Apparent nutrient (AD_{DM} and AD_{CP}) and energy digestibility (AD_{kJ}) values of Nile tilapia fed the SBM diet were significantly better (P < 0.05) than those fed the CONT and MBM diets and changed little between the measurement days in both groups (non-infected and infected). Although no visible symptoms associated with vibriosis were evident on either the skin or internal organs, the significantly lower (P < 0.05) AD_{DM}, AD_{CP}, and AD_{kJ} values obtained between day 1 and 10 (specifically on days 3 and 10) in the infected group fed the CONT and MBM diets might have implicated the pathogenicity of the bacteria. Further research concentrating on higher amounts of solvent extracted soy bean and meat and bone meal, different environmental conditions and doses of infection with V. anguillarum and immune response parameters including physiological and cellular stress responses is needed in order to identify the overall apparent nutrient digestibility of plant and animal protein sources in Nile tilapia infected with V. anguillarum.

Hypocalcaemia In Ossimi Sheep Associated With Feeding On Beet Tops (Beta Vulgaris), Sabry El-Khodery, Mohamed El-Boshy, Khalid Gaafar, Abdelbaset Elmashad
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Hypocalcemia was diagnosed in 48 Ossimi ewes in a flock of 125 sheep. Clinical signs, feed analysis, biochemical findings, and response to treatment were used for diagnosis. Lactating ewes were more frequently affected (56.25%) than pregnant (33.33%) and dry non-pregnant (10.41%) ewes. Teeth grinding, voiding soft pellets, absence of recumbency, non-tympanic rumen, dry mouth, and thin body condition were atypical findings. Ruminal fluid analysis showed significant increases of potassium and ammonia (P < 0.05), and a significant decrease of magnesium (P < 0.05) in diseased ewes, as compared with clinically normal ewes. Serum calcium, magnesium, and glucose in the diseased ewes were significantly lower (P < 0.001), (P < 0.01), (P < 0.05) than in clinically normal and control ewes, respectively; however, there was a significant increase of acetone (P < 0.01). In all, 2 ewes were slaughtered due to the failure to respond to treatment and only the kidneys had gross abnormality. Histopathological examination showed degenerative changes in the renal tubules, with deposition of calcium oxalate crystals. The results of this study indicate that the clinical syndrome of hypocalcemia and renal failure occurred in Ossimi sheep that feed on beet tops. The observed atypical signs of hypocalcemia highlight the importance of examining serum and ruminal fluid to determine the proper intervention.

Variations in the helminth species parasitizing the rudd, Scardinius erythrophthalmus L., and their prevalences were compared in 2 different localities (Gölbaşı Dam Lake and Kocadere Stream) in Bursa province in northwestern Turkey. The overall prevalences of helminth infections were 46.7% and 92.3% at Gölbaşı Lake and Kocadere Stream, respectively. The following helminths were detected: Dactylogyrus difformis, Diplostomum spathaceum metacercariae, Asymphlodora markewitschi, Ligula intestinalis plerocercoids, Skrajibillanus scardinii, Eustrongylides sp. larvae, and Hysterothylacium sp. larvae. Among these species, D. difformis and D. spathaceum were recorded at both sampling stations. However, D. difformis was the dominant species in rudd in Gölbaşı Lake (overall …

Investigation Of Reproductive Traits And A Computer-Assisted Single Artificial Insemination Procedure In Mares In Subtropical Taiwan, Jacky Peng-Wen Chan, Jui-Te Wu, Feng-Pang Cheng, Shi-Te Chuang, Chi-Chung Chou
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The objective of this study was to report the reproductive traits of mares by ultrasonography and hormone analyses in subtropical Taiwan and the successful artificial breeding of mares using a self-developed computer-assisted single insemination technique. A previously developed computer-assisted image analysis technique at our reproduction centre was employed to determine the optimal time for artificial insemination (AI). In the 8 mares that underwent this AI procedure, ovulations all occurred within 12 h post-insemination and 5 mares were impregnated (62.5%). The combined results of ultrasonic examination and hormone analyses showed that the mares in Taiwan were not only possible defined seasonal …

Iatrogenic Hyperlipidemia Associated With Lipid-Laden Aqueous Humor In A Cat Following Administration Of Megestrol Acetate, Masoud Selk Ghaffari
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
A 2-year-old male cat presented with sudden onset of binocular blindness in both eyes. The appearance of eyes seemed to change to cloudy white. Evaluation of intraocular components of the anterior segment was completely impossible due to the presence of homogeneous discoloration of the affected eyes. Careful history taking revealed that the cat had received megestrol acetate prescribed by the referring veterinarian for the treatment of urine spraying for 10 months. Laboratory findings revealed hypertriglyceridemia and hypercholesterolemia. According to the history of drug therapy, ocular signs, and laboratory findings, a diagnosis of drug induced lipemia and subsequent lipid-laden aqueous humor …

Estimation Of The Nitrogen-Phosphorus Load Caused By Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss Walbaum, 1792) Cage-Culture Farms In Kesikköprü Dam Lake: A Comparison Of Pelleted And Extruded Feed, Umut Aşir, Serap Pulatsü
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This research was conducted in order to estimate the nitrogen and phosphorus loads released into Kesikköprü Dam Lake between April and July 2006 from 2 different rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum, 1792) cage farms. Both farms had a capacity of about 20 t year^{-1}, and used pelleted and extruded feed. In Kesikköprü Dam Lake the nitrogen load was estimated to be between 56.00 and 62.92 kg t^{-1}of fish produced, and the phosphorus load was estimated to be between 10.66 and 12.17 kg t^{-1}of fish produced in cages in which pelleted feed was used, In cages in which extruded feed was …

Antagonism Of Medetomidine Sedation In Goats By Atipamezole And Yohimbine, Mahmood B. Mahmood, Fouad K. Mohammad
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The alpha 2-adrenoceptor antagonists atipamezole and yohimbine were used to antagonize medetomidine-induced sedation in 6-8-month-old native breed female goats. Intramuscular injection of medetomidine at the dose rate of 40 \mu g/kg body weight induced sedation and recumbency within 10-20 min in the goats. After recumbency, the goats were injected with saline (5 ml) (control group), atipamezole (0.2 mg/kg), or yohimbine (0.2 mg/kg) via the jugular vein. The duration of recumbency in the control group was 90 ± 9 min (mean ± SE). The effects of sedation continued in the control group goats even after regaining the righting reflex and standing. …
