Moraxella bovoculi is frequently cultured from the ocular secretions and conjunctiva of cattle with Infectious Bovine Keratoconjunctivitis (IBK). Previous work has shown that single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) diversity in this species is quite high with 81,284 SNPs identified in eight genomes representing two distinct genotypes isolated from IBK affected eyes (genotype 1) and the nasopharynx of cattle without clinical IBK signs (genotype 2), respectively. The goals of this study were to identify SNPs from a collection of geographically diverse and epidemiologically unlinked M. bovoculi strains from the eyes of IBK positive cattle (n = 183) and another from the eyes …

Background: The amino acid taurine (2-Aminoethanesulfonic acid) modulates inhibitory neurotransmitter receptors. This study aimed to determine if the dual action of taurine on GABAC- ρ1R relates to its structure. To address this, we tested the ability of the structurally related compounds homotaurine, hypotaurine, and isethionic acid to modulate GABAC- ρ1R.
Results: In Xenopus laevis oocytes, hypotaurine and homotaurine partially activate heterologously expressed GABAC- ρ1R, showing an increment in its deactivation time with no changes in channel permeability, whereas isethionic acid showed no effect. Competitive assays suggest that hypotaurine and homotaurine compete for the GABA-binding site. In addition, their effects were …

Background The global planetary health community increasingly recognises the need to prepare students to investigate and address connections between environmental change and human health. As we strive to support education on planetary health themes for students of all ages, understanding students’ concepts of linkages between the health of people and animals, and their shared environments might advance educational approaches. Children living in villages bordering Ruaha National Park in Iringa Region, Tanzania, have direct experience of these connections as they share a water-stressed but biodiverse environment with domestic animals and wildlife. Livelihoods in these villages depend predominantly on crop and livestock …

Potassium tellurite ( K2TeO3) is an effective selective agent for O157:H7 Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC), whereas tellurite resistance in non-O157 STEC is variable with information on O45 minimal. High-level K2TeO3 resistance in STEC is attributable to the ter gene cluster with terD an indicator of the cluster’s presence. Polymerase chain reactions for terD and K2TeO3 minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) determinations in broth cultures were conducted on 70 STEC and 40 non-STEC control organisms. Sixty-six STEC strains (94.3%) were terD+ compared to 28 control organisms (70.0%; P < 0.001). The prevalence of terD in …

Sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ adenosine triphosphatase (SERCA)2a, a critical regulator of calcium homeostasis, is known to be decreased in heart failure. Patients with myocarditis or dilated cardiomyopathy develop autoantibodies to SERCA2a suggesting that they may have pathogenetic significance. In this report, we describe epitope mapping analysis of SERCA2a in A/J mice that leads us to make five observations: 1) SERCA2a contains multiple T cell epitopes that induce varying degrees of myocarditis. One epitope, SERCA2a 971–990, induces widespread atrial inflammation without affecting noncardiac tissues; the cardiac abnormalities could be noninvasively captured by echocardiography, electrocardiography, and magnetic resonance microscopy imaging. 2) SERCA2a …

To Live And Fly In La: Using Bird Strike And Management Program Information To Improve Safety At Airports In The Los Angeles Basin, Todd J. Pitlik, Elizabeth Hermann, Eric Peralta, Brian E. Washburn
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Wildlife-aircraft collisions (wildlife strikes) pose a serious safety risk to aircraft. Wildlife strikes can be evaluated at different levels, include efforts to examine these problems at the national, regional, or state level, or for an individual airport. Similarly, wildlife strikes involving individual wildlife species or guilds can be examined at varying scales. Although wildlife strike analyses at the national, regional, or species/guild level are valuable, airport-specific analyses are essential for the effective implementation and evaluation of integrated wildlife damage management programs as these actions are conducted at the airport level. The species that present hazards to safe aircraft operations varies …

Evaluation Of Pcr Primers Targeting The Vp2 Region Of The Foot-And-Mouth Disease Virus For Improved Serotype Detection, Waqas Ali, Mudasser Habib, Muhammad Salah Ud Din Shah
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Frequently, a sequence from a single strain of a virus is used to design primers for PCR-based virus detection. However, high mutation rates in RNA viruses lead to failure of microorganism detection in clinical samples. Therefore, it is essential to find conserved regions within sequences to design primers for the detection of pathogen genomes in suspected clinical samples. The aim of the study was to find conserved regions of the genome for improved serotype detection. In the present study, primers were designed for serotype detection based on the VP2 coding region of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) after alignment of full …

Extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC) possess the ability to cause extraintestinal infections such as urinary tract infections, neonatal meningitis and sepsis. While information is readily available describing pathogenic E. coli populations in food-producing animals, studies in companion/sports animals such as horses are limited. In addition, many antimicrobial agents used in the treatment of equine infections are also utilised in human medicine, potentially contributing to the spread of antibiotic resistance determinants among pathogenic strains. The aim of this study was to phenotypically and genotypically characterise the multidrug resistance and virulence associated with 83 equine E. coli isolates recovered from foals with …

Efficacy And Safety Evaluations Of Topical Proretinal Nanoparticles, Benchaphorn Limcharoen
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Retinal (retinaldehyde) is one of natural vitamin A metabolites. It is widely used in clinical dermatology such as acne, acne scar, photoaging, wrinkles, psoriasis, skin neoplasia and seborrheic dermatitis. Retinal is a pivotal key to regulate keratinocyte proliferation and differentiation in the epidermis resulting in epidermal thickening and inhibit collagen destruction in the dermis. However, topical application of retinal is still irritative to the skin and chemically and photochemically unstable. Topically applied retinal can induce a retinoid dermatitis. This inflammation is induced by an overload of non-physiological amounts of exogenous retinoic acid in the skin. The adverse effects and physicochemical …

Surveillance Of Influenza A Viruses In A Live Bird Market, Yangon, Myanmar During 2017-2018, Khin Thurain
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Live bird markets play a significant role in highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus spread and transmission. In Myanmar, the first HPAI-H5N1 outbreak was reported in 2006. Since 2014, routine influenza A virus surveillance in LBMs have been conducted in Myanmar by the Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department in cooperation with FAO. However, there is limited information on virus characterization and evolution of influenza viruses in Myanmar. The objectives of this thesis were to detect influenza virus subtypes circulating in different poultry species from Mingalar-Taung-Nyunt live bird market (MTN-LBM) and to determine genetic characteristics and genetic diversity of influenza A …
Appropriate Campylobacter Detection Method And Genetic Variation Of Campylobacter Jejuni In Broilers, Natnicha Phetsri
Appropriate Campylobacter Detection Method And Genetic Variation Of Campylobacter Jejuni In Broilers, Natnicha Phetsri
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Campylobacter has been known as an important cause of gastroenteritis in humans. The primary source is raw or undercooked poultry meat. Previous study showed that Campylobacter isolated from slaughterhouses were associated with Campylobacter isolated from broiler farms. Thus, detection of Campylobacter flock status and sorting flocks prior to slaughtering processes may help prevent Campylobacter contamination between Campylobacter-positive and negative flocks during slaughtering processes. Unfortunately, appropriate sample type and isolation method have not been clearly specified for Campylobacter detection at the farm level. Because Campylobacter are fastidious bacteria, improper detection method can attribute to false negative results. Therefore, the objectives of …

Development Of Reverse Transcription Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification Combine With Lateral Flow Device As A Detection Assay For Swine Influenza Virus, Albarriyati Ummi Asih
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Swine influenza causes high morbidity and low mortality in pigs. The disease spreads rapidly in pig farms causing the delay of pig weight to reach market. Moreover, pigs play important role as "mixing vessel" of influenza viruses. Pigs can support infection and replication of influenza viruses from avian, human and swine origins. These lead to major concerns of the important of swine influenza which are not only the economic impacts but also the human health. There is the need of accurate and rapid diagnosis for swine influenza virus (SIV) to minimize further spreading of the viruses in pig population and …

Phenotypic And Genotypic Characteristics Of Extended-Spectrum Β-Lactamase (Esbl) Production And Colistin-Resistance In Salmonella Enterica And Escherichia Coli Isolated From Pigs And Their Meat Products In The Border Provinces Between Thailand And Cambodia, Lao Pdr And Myanmar, Kyaw Phyoe Sunn
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
A total of 809 samples of pig rectal swab from slaughterhouses (n=441) and pork from retail market (n=368) were collected in the border provinces among Thailand, Cambodia, Lao PDR and Myanmar between October 2016 and March 2017. The objective of this study was to determine resistance to extended-spectrum ß-lactams (ESBLs) and colistin in Salmonella enterica and Escherichia coli. A total of Salmonella (n=463) and E. coli (n=767) were collected and determined for the ESBL-production and for the Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MICs) of colistin and; the presence of ESBL gene and mcr gene. The results showed that the prevalence of Salmonella …
