Influence Of Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhizae On Water Movement Through Bouteloua Gracilis (H.B.K.) Lag Ex Steud, Michael F. Allen
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Root growth characteristics and water transport were compared between non-mycorrhizal Bouteloua gracilis and vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal Bouteloua gracilis infected with Glomus fasciculatus. Mycorrhizal plants did not have significantly different leaf area or root length from non-mycorrhizal plants, hut did have significantly fewer and shorter root hairs. Mycorrhizal plants had 50% lower leaf resistance with no change in leaf or root water potentials; thus transpiration was increased 100% with a 50% reduction in whole-plant, soil-to-root and root-to-leaf resistance. Assuming that the difference in water uptake was due to transport via the mycorrhizal hyphae, estimated fungus-to-root transport was 2◦8 x 10-5 …
The Plant Pathogenic Corynebacteria, Anne K. Vidaver
The Plant Pathogenic Corynebacteria, Anne K. Vidaver
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
The plant pathogenic corynebacteria are a fascinating group of bacteria that produce effects as diverse as any in the microbial world, ranging from wilts to abnormal growths. Several new pathogens have been discovered since this group was reviewed by Jensen (75), Starr (157), and Lelliott (96). Most subsequent reviews have dealt with taxonomy. The areas covered in this review necessarily reflect my biases and limitations. However, this review attempts to be comprehensive in some areas, and it calls attention to other areas that would benefit from more detailed investigation.
Vegetation Pattern And Disturbance Effects In The Subalpine-Alpine Interface, Valley Of The Ten Peaks, Alberta, Katherine J. Miller
Vegetation Pattern And Disturbance Effects In The Subalpine-Alpine Interface, Valley Of The Ten Peaks, Alberta, Katherine J. Miller
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
There have been several recent calls in the biogeography and vegetation ecology literature to investigate more thoroughly the role of recurrent disturbance or perturbation in the dynamics of subalpine communities, by assessing persistence and change in the dominant species population. In order to study the relationship between conifer regenerative effectiveness, disturbance effects, and the nature of the vegetation pattern, a field study was made of the vegetative cover (composition, abundance, dominance) and its performance (survival, vigour, and reproductive mode) in the upper subalpine zone in the Valley of the Ten Peaks, Banff National Park, Alberta. The occurrence of stresses and …

Influence Of Phosphate Source On Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhizae Of Bouteloua Gracilis, Michael F. Allen, James C. Sexton, Thomas S. Moore Jr., Martha Christensen
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Non-mycorrhizal and vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal Bouteloua gracilis infected with Glomus fasciculatus were grown in defined media containing different phosphate sources and compared with respect to phosphate content and form, biomass, chlorophyll concentration, and root phosphatase activity. The phosphate sources were sodium monobasic phosphate, a mixture of sodium monobasic phosphate and calcium phytate, and calcium phytate. Inositol and inositol plus calcium were added to the sodium phosphate medium as additional treatments. Mycorrhizal infection was highest in roots of plants grown in the presence of phytate (75%). Lower root infection levels were noted in plants from the sodium phosphate (19%) and mixed phosphate …
Effects Of Reduced Tillage And Multiple Cropping On Plant Diseases, Donald R. Sumner, Ben Doupnik Jr., M. G. Boosalis
Effects Of Reduced Tillage And Multiple Cropping On Plant Diseases, Donald R. Sumner, Ben Doupnik Jr., M. G. Boosalis
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
In the past, tillage research on plant diseases was concerned primarily with practices that buried plant residues in single-crop production systems. The burial of plant debris to destroy pathogens is an ancient agricultural prac tice (34). Each crop was tested as a single entity, and most crop rotations were based on one crop per year. Interest in notill and conservation tillage systems and mUltiple cropping has increased in the past two decades be cause of the scarcity and increased cost of fossil fuels, periodic world food shortages, and the concern over soil erosion (73,110). These concerns are of such paramount …

Comparative Water Relations And Photosynthesis Of Mycorrhizal And Non-Mycorrhizal Bouteloua Gracilis H.B.K. Lag Ex Steud., Michael F. Allen, William K. Smith, Thomas S. Moore Jr., Martha Christensen
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
The rangeland grass, Bouteloua gracilis was inoculated with its mycorrhizal symbiont, Glomus fasciculatus, to determine the influence of vesicular-arhuscular mycorrhizae on water status, stomatal behaviour and photosynthesis as well as gross plant morphology, biomass and phosphorus content. Mycorrhizal infection increased transpiration rates by over 100% with 50 to 70% lower leaf resistances to water vapour diffusion. Leaf xylem pressure was not different between mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal plants indicating that whole-plant resistance to water transport was reduced by more than 50%. Photosynthetic rates under saturating light conditions increased 68% with infection as a consequence of a 33% reduction in stomatal …

The Place For Annual Brome Grass, G W. Anderson
The Place For Annual Brome Grass, G W. Anderson
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Grasses in the anual pastures of southern Australia are particularly important early in the growing season.
The main grass sown, has been annual rygrass, but concerns are emerging with 'annual ryegrass toxicity' and and 'in crop' competition.
This work looks at the role of annual brome grass in pastures.

Erosion Risks With High Stocking Rates At Kojonup Trial, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
A pasture grazing trial at Kojonup dramatically illustrated the effects of Cyclone Alby. Severe erosion was evident on the heavily stocked plots while the more lightly stocked plots showed little damage.
Serradella : A Pasture Legume For Sandy Soils, John Sylvester Gladstones, N. R. Mckeown
Serradella : A Pasture Legume For Sandy Soils, John Sylvester Gladstones, N. R. Mckeown
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
French serradella grows well on many of the sandy soils along the west coast where other species such as sub clover often fail, and produces excellent feed both when green and in the dry state.
Establishment is easy because of its soft seedednedd. However the same characteristic, together with its erect growth habit, means that persistence under grazing has been poor.
This paper looks at work being done to understand the requirements to maximise results from serradella and develop better varieties.
Native Plants : Water Savers In The Garden, K S. Cole
Native Plants : Water Savers In The Garden, K S. Cole
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The climate of Western Australia may be one of the best in the world for people but it is a difficult one for many of our imported, and common garden plants. as a consequence, some 70 per cent of our summer water usage is for gardens and lawns.
This is not the sort of statistic that we should accept easily or happily.
There is a solution to this problem: a new approach to home gardening is required.
The new garden is based on W. A.'s own colourful native plants, which are adapted to mild winters, hot dey summers and poor …

Potato Storage Research In W.A, D C. Hosking
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Preliminary results of research into refrigerated storage of potatoes indicate that the qyality and out-turn are influenced more by the variety of potato stored than by storage conditions.
New Records Of Native And Introduced Plants From Nebraska, Steven P. Churchill, Robert B. Kaul, David M. Sutherland
New Records Of Native And Introduced Plants From Nebraska, Steven P. Churchill, Robert B. Kaul, David M. Sutherland
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Recent field work in Nebraska by staff of the University of Nebraska Herbarium has produced a number of records of previously uncollected specimens and has confirmed the presence of species collected only a few times long ago. Some of the records are of American species which are indigenous to Nebraska or which have recently spread to the state, while other records are of foreign species which are thoroughly established in the wild. Some of these are potentially serious weeds, though none have reached that stage yet.
All specimens cited are deposited in the University Herbarium in Nebraska Hall, Lincoln, except …
Progress In The Nursery Industry, W J. Heggers
Progress In The Nursery Industry, W J. Heggers
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The demand for ornamental plants in Western Australia is sat an unprecedented level, making the nursery industry a relatively prosperous branch of horticulture.
One reason for the continued demand for nursery lines is probably that people are concerned about the environment - "green survival", as it is often refered to in promotional literature.
In rural areas, farmers are becoming increasingly aware of the value of planting windbreaks, shade and ornamental trees, while mining companies and the Forests Department are actively engaged in re-afforestation.
As a result the nursery industry is in a healthy situation and can continue to develop in …
Prospects For Control Of Phytopathogenic Bacteria By Bacteriophages And Bacteriocins, Anne K. Vidaver
Prospects For Control Of Phytopathogenic Bacteria By Bacteriophages And Bacteriocins, Anne K. Vidaver
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
The last review on bacteriophages and bacteriocins of phytopathogenic bacteria was that of Okabe & Goto (98). All but one (21) of the subsequent reviews (II, 12, 60, 94, 104) have dealt primarily with viruses and bacteriocins of bacteria other than phytopathogens. The most recent microbiological compendia that in clude bacteriophages and bacteriocins are of limited value for phytobacteriolo gists because the authors generally overlook or ignore such agents (29, 47, 77, 119). However, Adam's classic .book (4), the review by Bradley (II), and the bibliography of Raettig (102) are still of value to phytobacteriologists as are reviews dealing principally …
Lysimetric Calibration Of The Bowen Ratio-Energy Balance Method For Evapotranspiration Estimation In The Central Great Plains, Blaine L. Blad, Norman J. Rosenberg
Lysimetric Calibration Of The Bowen Ratio-Energy Balance Method For Evapotranspiration Estimation In The Central Great Plains, Blaine L. Blad, Norman J. Rosenberg
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Most reports show good agreement between evapotranspiration (ET) rates estimated by Bowen Ratio-Energy Balance (BREB) method and rates measured with lysimeters, although underestimation by the BREB model has occasionally been reported. This study was conducted to evaluate the performance of the BREB technique in the climatic conditions characteristic of the central Great Plains, a region where a significant proportion of the energy consumed by evapotranspiration is supplied from advected sensible heat.
Agreement between the BREB method and lysimetric measurements of ET is good during non-advective periods but during advective periods the BREB model underestimates ET by about 20%. Data collected …
Water Economy For Lawns And Gardens, K S. Cole
Water Economy For Lawns And Gardens, K S. Cole
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Much of the summer water consumption occurs because it is widely believed that heavy summer watering is necessary. Householders often mistakenly water heavily to keep their gardens green and growing. Many may not realise that gardens can be kept vigorous and healthy with much less water than is commonly applied.
Some Concepts In Rangeland Management, R B. Hacker
Some Concepts In Rangeland Management, R B. Hacker
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The arid and semi-arid zones of Australia occupy about 75 per cent of the land mass. The pastoral industries are located within these zones and, although productivity per unit area is low, the region nevertheless constitutes one of the nation's valuable renewable resources.
If properly managed, such a resource may be maintained as a productive asset indefinitely.
Samphire For Waterlogged Salt Land, C V. Malcolm, G. J. Cooper
Samphire For Waterlogged Salt Land, C V. Malcolm, G. J. Cooper
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
For non-waterlogged and mildly waterlogged salt land a number of salt-tolerant shrubs may be used for forage production.
Areas which are highly saline and regularly waterlogged are not suited to these shrubs. However, during trials with shrub species, samphires (Arthrocnemum spp.) were found to volunteer and grow well on these sites.
Research into the use of samphires has shown that it is possible to harvest seed and obtain a seed sample suitable for sowing through a drill. Established samphire stands provide useful grazing in many parts of the Western Australian wheatbelt.
Forage Production From Shrubs On Saline Land, C V. Malcolm
Forage Production From Shrubs On Saline Land, C V. Malcolm
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
In the first volume of the Journal of the Department of Agriculture in the year 1900, the results of experiments at Tulare Experiment Station in California on the growing of Australian saltbushes are reported.
Seed was first sent from Australia by Baron von Mueller in June, 1881. Three species of saltbush (A. semibaccata, A. numularia and A. vesicaria) are all reported to have grown well.
Although C. A. Gardner in 1929 suggested the growing of saltbushes for forage, the earliest and clearest recommendations are those of Teakle and Burvill in 1945.
Early research tended to concentrate mainly on the possibility …
Survival Mechanisms Of Phytopathogenic Bacteria, M. L. Schuster, D. P. Coyne
Survival Mechanisms Of Phytopathogenic Bacteria, M. L. Schuster, D. P. Coyne
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Natural habitats usually do not provide bacteria the continuity of agricultural crops. With continuous culture. perpetuation of pathogen is no problem. Although agricul tural practices provide some discontinuity between crops. it is less than that in nature. Uniformity of crop germ plasm also favors inoculum buildup and perhaps perpetuation of the pathogens.
Nitrogen For Pastures, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Nitrogen For Pastures, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The use of nitrogen (N) fertilisers on cereals has long been recognised and accepted as an economic farm practice. It is only more recently that the use of fertiliser nitrogen has been considered for pasture and fodder production, mainly on wholemilk and butterfat farms in the South-West. The high quality feed produced may be substituted for concentrates or conserved fodder. Large increases in seasonal production have been reported.
Because nitrogen fertiliser is expensive, has a short-term effect, and can affect the clover content of pastures, a series of field experiments were conducted in 1973 to examine the role of nitrogen …
Potassium For Pastures, Walter Jacob Cox
Potassium For Pastures, Walter Jacob Cox
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
IVIany pastures in the south-west of Western Australia are deficient in potassium or need regular dressings for maximum growth. This article indicates areas and situations in which potassium might be needed, shows how deficiency is diagnosed and gives recommended rates of application.
Farm Grazing Levels, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Farm Grazing Levels, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Stocking rates in many dairying areas are so low that the Division has established nine grazing level demonstrations in various areas.
Their aim is to demonstrate that higher stocking rates are practical on existing farms.
Reproductive Wastage In Sheep On Clover Areas, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Reproductive Wastage In Sheep On Clover Areas, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Western Australia's 67 per cent lambing for 1970 compares poorly with that of other Australian States, and other countries. From the 12.3 million ewes mated in this State's agricultural areas in 1970, only 8.2 million lambs were marked.
This low 77.7 per cent conception rate sparked the present series of reproductive wastage investigations by the Department's Sheep and Wool Branch.
This report describes the first year's results of the project in W.A.'s "clover disease" areas.
Annual Pasture And Weed Plant Ecology, B J. Quinlivan
Annual Pasture And Weed Plant Ecology, B J. Quinlivan
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The purpose of this article is to outline a few basic principles of pasture and weed ecology with particular reference to seed dormancy mechanisms.
These principles apply to many pasture plants and weeds, although their relative importance varies with the particular plants under study.
