Histochemical Investigations On The Effects Of Fluoride On Oxidative Enzymes From Pelargonium Zonale And Allium Cepa, Bachettira Wthappa Poovaiah

The effects of fluoride fumigation on Pelargonium zonale leaves and also sodium fluoride infiltration of leaf sections and Allium cepa roots were studied in vivo.
Anatomical studies of fluoride-injured leaves showed a total collapse of the margin of the injured leaf. In injured regions the upper epidermal cells were normal and were the last to be destroyed. Detailed study of the vascular region of leaves near the injured area and also petioles from severely injured leaves showed clogging of xylem vessels by tyloses. Clogging of sieve tubes occurred, presumably, due to deposition of callose substance on sieve plates of …

Karyotype Analysis As An Index Of Radiosensitivity Of A Grass Hybrid, David R. Braegger

Large differences exist between plant species in their response to ionizing radiation. The factors involved in radiosensitivities are complex and not well understood. The best criterion, so far, in studies on the acute lethal level of radiation for plant species is the average interphase chromosome volume (Sparrow et al. 1963). There are also close relationships that exist between DNA content, nuclear volume, total chromosome volume and radiosensitivity (Bowen, 1962; Sparrow et al. 1963; Sparrow et al. 1965). WHEN a body of water becomes discoloured with a super-abundance of free-floating, microscopic plant or, in rare cases, animal life, it is said to develop a "water bloom."
This article discusses some aspects of the appearance of water blooms, particularly those caused by algae, and with the effects that certain toxic algae have on livestock.

THE toxic species of the genera Gastrolobium and Oxylobium are a unique group of poison plants which have caused considerable economic loss to stock-raisers in Western Australia ever since the early days of settlement.
These plants are widely distributed over the agricultural areas of the south-west, and, with the opening up of large tracts of land for stock-raising, the danger is as high as it has even been.

Only recently has enthusiasm for our remarkable flora developed within the State and, with the formation of sponsoring societies and the establishment of the Kings Park Botanic Gardens, native species have become popular in home and civic gardens.
