Floral Morphology And Phylogeny In The Hydrocharitaceae, Robert B. Kaul

The vascular anatomy of 13 of the 15 genera of the Hydrocharitaceae has been studied, and certain aspects of floral morphology are considered. The flowers of the family show a broad range of specialized structures combined with primitive characteristics. The origin of paired and single stamens is interpreted as probable modifications of fascicled stamens. Extreme reduction in the androecium is shown for several genera. Tendencies toward reduction and fusion within the gynoecium are pronounced. Most genera are at least slightly syncarpous, but a few are apocarpous. Floral Development And Vasculature In Hydrocleis Nymphoides (Butomaceae), Robert B. Kaul

The flower of Hydrocleis nymphoides consists of three sepals which arise in spiral succession, three simultaneously arising petals, numerous stamens and staminodia which arise in centrifugal order, and six carpels. A residual apex remains at maturity. The first-formed members of the androecium are stamens and the later-formed members are staminodia which develop below the stamens and which become outwardly displaced during expansion of the receptacle. The androecium is supplied by branching vascular trunk bundles. The carpels are completely open but the ventral margins are slightly conduplicately appressed basally. A Preliminary Study On Ensiling Aspen Bark, Charles Helleloid, John Klow, Gary Pullar, John Veranth

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

A preliminary study was conducted on the ensiling of aspen bark in laboratory silos for the production of animal food. Several types of silo, both with and without an enzyme preparation, were tested. Results of physical and chemical tests on the contents indicate that definite changes occur when bark is ensiled, and that these changes differ with ensiling conditions. Several of these changes suggest possibilities for future research.

Mature Pine Forests In Duluth Harbor Area, Donald W. Davidson, John B. Bernard

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Quantitative and qualitative studies have been made on mature pine forests of selected areas on Minnesota Point and Wisconsin Point in the Duluth-Superior Harbor area. The forests were sampled by the point quarters method. The leading dominant in the Minnesota forest was Pinus resinosa, while the leading dominant in the Wisconsin forest was Pinus strobus. Trees up to 173 years of age were found on Minnesota Point, while the maximum age of the trees sampled on Wisconsin Point was 142 years. A total of 87 species of vascular plants were identified in the two areas.

Scotch Pine: Variation And Performance In Minnesota, Muhammad A. K. Khalil

Scotch pine exhibits clinal variation from north to south in two characteristics: viz., the number of days after April 15 to the time of maximum rote of height growth, and total height after the age of 17 years. There is east-west clinal variation with respect to two characteristics: viz., the number of days after April 15 to the beginning of height growth, and to the time of the maximum rote of height growth. Taxonomic Review : Miridae Of The Nevada Test Site And The Western United States, Harry H. Knight

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

Approximately 5,000 specimens of plant bugs were collected at the Nevada Test Site between 1959 and 1965. Greatest emphasis was given to collecting from June 10–24, 1965, when the desert areas at the test site were unusually profuse with blooming vegetation. A total of 160 species representing 50 genera was taken at the test site. Of these, 7 genera and 96 species are new to science.

Comparative data for these and additional species from other parts of western North America are also included. These represent an additional 449 species, of which 5 genera and 148 species are new to science. …

This paper, presenting an annotated list of 203 species of Ascomycetes and Basidiomycetes of Minnesota, is the first published report of the occurrence of many of the species in the state. The collections on which the list is based were made in five Minnesota counties and are deposited in the senior author's herbarium at Faribault, Minnesota, and in the University of Michigan Herbarium at Ann Arbor, Michigan.
