Effect Of Phenology, Clipping, And Moisture Stress On Translocation In Grass, Ronald Eugene Sosebee May 1969

Effect Of Phenology, Clipping, And Moisture Stress On Translocation In Grass, Ronald Eugene Sosebee

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The effect of phenology on the pattern of photosynthate distribution was studied in crested wheatgrass (Agropyron cristatum (L.) Gaertn.) plants grown in a nursery under semi-natural environmental conditions. A set of plants was transferred every fourth week (April 13, 1968, through December 2, 1968) from the nursery to a growth room where the temperature was maintained at approximately 24 C with 16-hour photoperiods. A single leaf per plant received 1.5x10-3 ml of either NaH232PO4 or KH232PO4. Approximately 24 hours after the 32P application, the plants were harvested and …

Overwintering Of Erwinia Amylovora Inside Living Host Tissue In Cache Valley, Utah, G. Doyle Morrill May 1969

Overwintering Of Erwinia Amylovora Inside Living Host Tissue In Cache Valley, Utah, G. Doyle Morrill

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Experiments were conducted to see if Erwinia amylovora (Burrill) Winslow et al. overwinters inside living host tissue in Utah. Bacteria, collected from apple, pear, mountain ash, chokecherry and Pyracantha, were used in the experiment. Isolates taken from buds and inner bark plated on nutrient yeast dextrose agar, we re tested by serological and bacteriophage techniques. Those showing positive tests were then inoculated into Bartlett pear seedlings to test virulence.

Both virulent and avirulent isolates were isolated from each species of plant in the experiment. Pathogenic bacteria were isolated from diseased tissue near cankers, as well as from apparently healthy inner …

Western Ironweed: Research On Anatomy, Physiology, Life History And Control, M. K. Mccarty, C. J. Scifres Apr 1969

Western Ironweed: Research On Anatomy, Physiology, Life History And Control, M. K. Mccarty, C. J. Scifres

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Western ironweed (Vernonia baldwini Torr.) is a member of a widespread and diverse genus. The genus is characterized by perennial herbs and shrubs. Weaver and Darland listed the increase of western ironweed, at one time sparsely distributed, as an indication of degeneration of the true prairie. They described the invasion, spread, and ultimate dominance of western ironweed in many pastures after the drought years. Weaver measured ironweed roots to a depth of 11 or 12 ft., and remarked that it was one of "the most abundant and worst weeds in native pastures derived from the true prairie." Research has …

Regeneration Of White Cedar In Northern Swamps, Walter H. Petraborg Jan 1969

Regeneration Of White Cedar In Northern Swamps, Walter H. Petraborg

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Regeneration of white cedar in six northern Minnesota swamps by layering, suckering, and seeding was found where surface and subsurface soils were circum-neutral (median pH 7.1 for surface soils and 7.0 for subsurface soils) but not on more acid soils. Regeneration was best where the peat soil was coarsely decomposed and little compacted, and where the water table was high with some flow of ground water through the swamp. Sphagnum moss grew on all regeneration sites but was also found on more acid, unsuitable sites. No single associated groundcover plant appeared to be a specifically reliable indicator species for regeneration …

Ferns And Fern Allies Of Brown County, Barbara J. R. Gudmunson

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

In collecting ferns and fern allies in Brown County, Minnesota, during the 1964 summer, six of the seven species previously recorded were found again and six fern species and seven horsetail species and varieties new to the records were collected.

Tao newly found in 1964 are: Botrychium virginianum var. virginianum, Osmunda clayfoniana, Woodsia obtusa, Woodsia oregana var. cathcartiana, Athyrium filix-femina var. michauxii, Cystopteris bulbifera, Equisetum hyemale var. pseudohyemale, Equisetum hyemale var. elatum, Equisetum scirpoides, Equisetum fluviatile, Equisetum palustre, Equisetum pratense, and Equisetum sylvaticum.

Voucher specimens of the nineteen taxa were deposited in the herbarium of Mankato Stole College. Duplicate specimens …

Lead Absorption From Soil Into Legumes, Marie H. Berg

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

There is evidence that lead is taken up from the soil into legumes and accumulated in the leaves of beans and peanuts which were examined in this study.

Wildflowers Of The Stirling Range, Alexander S. George Jan 1969

Wildflowers Of The Stirling Range, Alexander S. George

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

TWO hundred miles south-east of Perth, the Stirling Range rises abruptly from the surrounding plain. About forty miles long, it is a line of semi-isolated hills, rather than a continuous block.

There are many intriguing plants of diverse colour and form. Well over 400 species are known from the Range. A number of these are found no-where else, and some are restricted to one mountain.

Wildflowers Of The Geraldton District, E M. Bennett Jan 1969

Wildflowers Of The Geraldton District, E M. Bennett

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE wildflowers of Western Australia which have aroused such interest throughout the world are found largely in the south western corner of the State.

Within this area, and indeed in the drier areas also, certain districts are richer than others.

One example of this concentration of wildflowers occurs to the north and east of Geraldton.
