An Analysis Of The Taxonomic Status Of A New Taxon In The Genus Salsola, H. Lamont Arnold

An attempt was made to determine the taxonomic status of a Salsola taxon new to Utah but found quite extensively in parts of Nevada, and California. The disciplines of cytogenetics, morphology, anatomy, chemotaxonomy, and palynology were employed.

It is the consensus of some taxonomists that this new taxon, referred to as Salsola X and which has lax perianth tips, is a variant of the Salsola Salsola paulsenii Litv. or barbwire Russian thistle taxon. Accepted taxonomic authorities on the Cheopodiaceae, Aellen and Botschantzev, consider the erect, spinose perianth tips to be a morphological character used in delimiting S. paulsenii. If …

An analysis has been made of the basic ecology of aspen forests of the mountainous areas of Utah and northern Arizona. Forty-nine study areas have been examined in respect to density, height and age of the tree cover, tree reproduction, and composition and biomass production of the understory. A graphic model of interspecific assocations among prevalent understory species has been prepared by a cluster-analysis procedure based on presence and absence of species in 1,225 small quadrats (0.25 m²) uniformly distributed among the 49 stands. The model separates species of relatively stable as opposed to rapidly seral aspen forests. …

Vegetational composition and environmental parameters were analyzed. for 14 stands. Cluster diagrams based on index of similarity values illustrated interstand relationships. The Index of Fluctuation was developed for the analysis of intrastand dynamics. Based on the densities and numbers of species of trees and saplings within a stand, it indicated degree of compositional stability. It was concluded that present vegetation is divided into relatively distinct communities which have resulted, at least in part, from disturbance.

The Effects Of Moist-Heat Treatments And Stratification On Germination Of Prairie Plant Seeds, John E. Stuurwold

Germination of Silphium terebinthenaceum was enhanced by a post-stratification most-heat treatment at 80°C. Tested seeds of four other perennial herbs common to midwestern prairies (Andropogon scoparius, Sorghastrum nutans, Eryngium yuccifolium, and Solidago rigida) showed little adverse or beneficial effects of the heat treatment. Heat treatments alone had little effect on the seeds; the length of stratification periods necessary to effect maximal germination varied. The significance of these findings is examined in the light of related literature on grassland fire ecology.

A Computer Analysis Of Relationships Between Orders Of Chrysophyta, David P. Olds

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The division Chrysophyta has previously been formulated to include three diverse groups. A computer analysis was made of the individual orders within the division to determine the "naturalness" of this grouping and also to show how computer techniques may be used for this purpose. The computer methods are described, and a possible system of classification of the division based on the computer analysis is presented.

Equisetum arvense was studied for sexual development. The effects of crowding and transplantation were observed to influence sexual maturity and growth patterns of the gametophytes. Regeneration experiments demonstrated that sexual development is environmentally induced.

The Dampier Archipelago is a group of islands off the north west coast of Australia (20 20! - 20 45'S, 116 Cast . 117°E), first discovered by William Dampier in 1699 and subsequently named after him by the Baudin expedition of 1801. This name has since been applied by some authors to include all islands from Roebourne to North West Cape, including both Barrow Island and the Monte Bello Islands, but it is more correctly applied to those islands within a 30 mile radius of the town of Dampier.
