Taxonomy Of The Genus Chloris (Gramineae), Dennis E. Anderson Mar 1974

Taxonomy Of The Genus Chloris (Gramineae), Dennis E. Anderson

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

This study is a worldwide taxonomic treatment utilizing endomorphic characters such as cytology, histology, and embryology, in addition to the traditional exomorphic features. New chromosome numbers and histological information are reported. Relationships between Chloris and other genera in the Chlorideae are discussed. A total of 56 species is recognized in the genus; each is described and illustrated. Complete synonymies are included as well as a list of unidentified or rejected names. Distributions and maps are given for each species, along with lists of specimens examined during studies at various herbaria. Reports of field studies involving introgression among certain species are …

Lysimetric Calibration Of The Bowen Ratio-Energy Balance Method For Evapotranspiration Estimation In The Central Great Plains, Blaine L. Blad, Norman J. Rosenberg Mar 1974

Lysimetric Calibration Of The Bowen Ratio-Energy Balance Method For Evapotranspiration Estimation In The Central Great Plains, Blaine L. Blad, Norman J. Rosenberg

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Most reports show good agreement between evapotranspiration (ET) rates estimated by Bowen Ratio-Energy Balance (BREB) method and rates measured with lysimeters, although underestimation by the BREB model has occasionally been reported. This study was conducted to evaluate the performance of the BREB technique in the climatic conditions characteristic of the central Great Plains, a region where a significant proportion of the energy consumed by evapotranspiration is supplied from advected sensible heat.

Agreement between the BREB method and lysimetric measurements of ET is good during non-advective periods but during advective periods the BREB model underestimates ET by about 20%. Data collected …

Variation In Ligule Spotting In Coreopsis Basalis, Edwin B. Smith Jan 1974

Variation In Ligule Spotting In Coreopsis Basalis, Edwin B. Smith

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The ligules of Coreopsis basalis bear an attractive reddish-brown spot at the base. The spot has been used as a taxonomic character of the species. But there is variation within populations at any one time, and within individuals at sequential times, for the size of the spot. A few individuals lack the ligule spot entirely. Variation in average ligule spot size in greenhouse-grown populations of C. basalis and an artificial hybrid is described. Average spot size declines as the blooming season progresses. Some individuals with spotted ligules early in the season bore spotless ligules late in the season. No correlation …

Multi-Use Of The Campus Environment In The Teaching Of Botany, Jewel E. Moore Jan 1974

Multi-Use Of The Campus Environment In The Teaching Of Botany, Jewel E. Moore

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Use of the campus environment in the teaching program is described with special reference to the campus of University of Central Arkansas. Permanent labels identify the campus trees, many of which are representative of native Arkansas trees. A Daylily Display Bed and an Iris Display Bed, both composed of hybrid varieties, are included in the campus design. This organization of the flora of the campus provides a community service as well as an outdoor supplement to the classroom studies in plant science.

A Phylogenetic Classification Of The Annoniflorae, Robert F. Thorne Jan 1974

A Phylogenetic Classification Of The Annoniflorae, Robert F. Thorne

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

A synoptical key to the three orders Annonales, Berberidales, and Nymphaeales of the superorder Annoniflorae is presented with discussion as to why these orders, the core of the histmical Ranales, are considered to be closely related to one another but divergent from the similarly plimitive Hamamelidales of the Hamamelidiflorae, and why the names Annonales and Berberidales are preferred to the names Magnoliales and Ranunculales. For each of the three orders detailed synoptical keys to the 33 families and 30 subfamilies (21 additional to the typical subfamilies) recognized by the author are presented. Also the included families of each order are …
