Wood Anatomy Of Bruniaceae: Correlations With Ecology, Phylogeny, Organography, Sherwin Carlquist Jan 1978

Wood Anatomy Of Bruniaceae: Correlations With Ecology, Phylogeny, Organography, Sherwin Carlquist

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Wood of Bruniaceae is very primitive according to widelyaccepted criteria. Vessels are relatively long, with scalariform perforation plates having numerous bars, fully or vestigially bordered. Many aberrations in disposition of bars and perforations in perforation plates are present, and no species has exclusively normal perforation plates. Lateral wall pitting of vessels, both intervascular and between vessels and rays, is scalariform to opposite. Vessels are solitary or nearly so, angular to round in transection. Helical thickenings are present in vessels of only a single species. All imperforate elements are thick-walled tracheids, some with gelatinous walls. Tracheids are only slightly longer (in …

Gamsiella, A New Subgenus Of Mortierella (Mucorales: Mortierellaceae), R. K. Benjamin Jan 1978

Gamsiella, A New Subgenus Of Mortierella (Mucorales: Mortierellaceae), R. K. Benjamin

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Mortierella multidivaricata is described and placed in a new subgenus, Gamsiella, of M ortierella. It is distinguished from species of subgenus M ortierella in having repeatedly divaricately branched sporangiophores. Large numbers of sporangiola develop simultaneously on slender, attenuate pedicels arising from the ultimate branches of the sporangiophore. The sporangiole of M. multidivaricata forms two subglobose, finely sculpttued sporangiospores. Mostly terminal, globose, spiny chlamydospores are formed in slender, secondary, intra- or extrahyphal hyphae that arise from living segments of the ageing aerial mycelium. Classification of the Mortierellaceae is summarized briefly. The type and only known strain of M. multidivaricata originated from …

The Columnar Junipers Of Western North Dakota (An Investigation Into The Cause Of Their Columnarity), James M. Murphy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this report is to focus on the evaluation of the presence and amount of ethylene in the burning lignite fumes and to search for morphogenetic factors in the lignite at the Slope County site. The former was considered to be more important and was investigated more thoroughly.

The Cirsium Altissimum - Discolor Complex In Illinois, Dennis R. Bischoff Jan 1978

The Cirsium Altissimum - Discolor Complex In Illinois, Dennis R. Bischoff

Masters Theses

Cirsium altissimum, C. discolor and suspected hybrids used in this study were collected during September 1977 from three locations in east central Illinois. All were combined for subsequent taking of data because the study dealt with incidence of hybridization and morphological discriminators rather than degrees and directions of introgression. Ten possible discriminators were chosen by examination of herbarium specimens of parental plants: I, Involucre width; II, Involucre height; III, Pubescence of upper leaf surface; IV, Angle of departure of main veins from the midrib; V, Number of spines per cm along the margin; VI, Length of indurate portion of …

The Biology Of Coprinus Radians, Ozonium, Oidium, And Their Interrelationships, Thomas J. Fahey Dec 1977

The Biology Of Coprinus Radians, Ozonium, Oidium, And Their Interrelationships, Thomas J. Fahey

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The pleomorphism of Coprinus radians was studied. The three distinct growth forms--sporophore, oidial stage, and ozonium stage--were examined in relation to ultrastructure, morphology and development. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy are correlated with photomicrographs of developmental stages. Development of the oidia and of the sporophore are of particular interest. The multinucleate oidia develop quite differently from oidia as generally described for Basidiomycete imperfect stages. Development of the oidia of this Coprinus is holoblastic and sympodial. The mushroom primordia are differentiated internally into gill, cap, and stipe hyphae while only l-2mm in diameter. At this stage they look superficially like sclerotial …

The Extrafloral Nectaries Of Ipomoea Carnea (Convolvulaceae), Kathleen H. Keeler Nov 1977

The Extrafloral Nectaries Of Ipomoea Carnea (Convolvulaceae), Kathleen H. Keeler

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

lpomoea carnea (Convolvulaceae) possesses two types of extrafloral nectaries, located on the petiole and on the pedicel. These secrete a complex nectar containing sugars and amino acids. The insects attracted to the extrafloral nectaries are predominantly ants and they are relatively abundant throughout the year. A number of incidents of plant defense as a result of the presence of extrafloral nectary visitors at the extrafloral nectaries of I. carnea were observed and are consistent with the ant-guard theory of the function of extrafloral nectaries.
