A Floristic Survey Of The Vascular Plants Of Barren County, Kentucky, George Pryor Johnson May 1980

A Floristic Survey Of The Vascular Plants Of Barren County, Kentucky, George Pryor Johnson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A floristic survey was made of the vascular plants of Barren County, Kentucky. A total of 1190 specimens were collected which represent 603 species, 351 genera and 103 families.

The Asteraceae had the largest number of species of any family, a total of 85. The next largest families were Poaceae and Fabaceae, with 54 and 35 species, respectively. The genus Carex was represented by 24 species, the largest number for any genus.

A description and discussion of the vascular flora of specific sites as well as the county in general is given. An annotated list of species is also presented.

The Extrafloral Nectaries Of Ipomoea Leptophylla (Convolvulaceae), Kathleen H. Keeler Feb 1980

The Extrafloral Nectaries Of Ipomoea Leptophylla (Convolvulaceae), Kathleen H. Keeler

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Ipomoea leptophylla Torr. (Convolvulaceae) is a sprawling dry-site morning glory with two types of extrafloral nectaries: foliar nectaries and nectaries on the outside of the sepals. Both are shown to greatly increase insect visitation to the plant. Ants visiting sepal-surface nectaries significantly decrease flower damage caused by grasshoppers and seed losses caused by bruchids. These results are similar to those for I. carnea and other plants whose extrafloral nectary-ant interactions have been studied, but differ in detail. This is the first demonstration of antiherbivore defense of a prairie plant by nectary visitors.

Vegetation Within A Portion Of The Copper-Nickel Study Region, Nancy Sather

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Cluster analysis of data from 277 Braun-Blanquet releves differentiates 11 major forested communities in a 1,450 sq km area of northeastern Minnesota. Upland communities include black spruce-jack pine, jack pine, red pine, aspen-birch, aspen-birch-fir, and mixed conifer-deciduous. Forested wetland communities include black spruce, tamarack, cedar, ash, and alder carr. The greatest floristic differences are between those communities at opposite extremes of the moisture spectrum, and greatest similarities between red pine and aspen-birch-fir communities. Floristic similarities and differences are-reflected by the positions of communities in the synecological ·moisture nutrient field Structural differences between upland communities are more notable than floristic differences.

Flowering Plants: Willows To Mustards, Robert H. Mohlenbrock Jan 1980

Flowering Plants: Willows To Mustards, Robert H. Mohlenbrock

Illustrated Flora of Illinois

This eighth volume in the comprehensive Illustrated Flora of Illinois series is the seventh volume devoted to flowering plants (the eighth volume is devoted to ferns) and the second treating dicotyledons, which include such well-known plants as roses, peas, mustards, mints, nightshades, milkweeds, and asters. The previous volume on dicots, Flowering Plants: Hollies to Loasas, was published in 1978.

In the present volume, Mohlenbrock includes three orders of vascular plants encompassing five families. The orders are Salicales and Tamaricales, of the Salicaceae and Tamaricaceae families, and Capparidales, of the Capparidaceae, Resedaceae, and Brassicaceae families. In all, 44 genera and 117 …

Report No 40 - Commercially Exploited Vacsular Plants Native In Western Australia: Census, Atlas And Preliminary Assessment Of Conservation Status, Barbara L. Rye, S. D. Hopper, L. E. Watson Jan 1980

Report No 40 - Commercially Exploited Vacsular Plants Native In Western Australia: Census, Atlas And Preliminary Assessment Of Conservation Status, Barbara L. Rye, S. D. Hopper, L. E. Watson

Fisheries Research Reports

A census and atlas is provided of 1 119 native Western Australian plant species which were commercially exploited during 1977-79 in the cut plant, nursery or seed trades. The exploited species are concentrated in the vicinities of Perth and Albany, the two matin centres for the wildflower industry. Preliminary assessments of the conservation status of the exploited species are provided. Approximately r200 species are regarded as being rare, geographically or poorly collected, and further studies are recommended for these species to determine whether they are in danger of overexploitation.

Fisheries Report No 39 - The Wildlife Of The Proposed Toolonga Nature Reserve, Shark Bay Shire, Western Australia, A. A. Burbidge, P. J. Fuller, K. Cashin

Fisheries Research Reports

Following a Cabinet endorsed recommendation by the Environmental Protection Authority in 1975, an area of vacant Crown Zand (the Toolonga Area) was examined during April and September, 1978.

The geology, soils and vegetation of the area are described and annotated lists of mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles are presented. A small part of the area lies in the South West Botanical Province (Irwin District) but most is in the Eremaean Botanical Province (Carnarvon District). The vertebrate fauna is a mixture of south-western, Shark Bay and arid zone species, but the last predominate.

The Toolonga Area provides an opportunity to protect …
