Report No 41 - A Survey Method For Identifying Roadside Flora Suitable For Conservation In Western Australia, John K. Scott
Report No 41 - A Survey Method For Identifying Roadside Flora Suitable For Conservation In Western Australia, John K. Scott
Fisheries Research Reports
A survey method for identifying flora suitable for conservation alongside roads in south-western Australia was derived from an examination of characteristics of road verges. Two roads, from Midland to Toodyay and from Armadale to Bunbury, were examined. Width of verge, weed cover, soil disturbance, vegetation structure, presence of public utilities, evidence of fire and the type of adjoining land were measured at one mile (1.6 km) intervals on both sides of the road. Also recorded were aesthetic qualities such as stands of beautiful trees and sites of special interest, e.g. the presence of rare plants.
Three variables, percentage weed cover, …

Report No 42 - A Guide To The Gazetted Rare Flora Of Western Australia, Barbara L. Rye, Stephen D. Hopper
Fisheries Research Reports
Descriptions and illustrations are provided for the first 100 taxa which have been gazetted as rare, likely to become extinct or in need of special protection under the Wildlife Conservation Act 1950-1979. Most of these rare taxa are restricted to the South-West Botanical Province and more than one-third occur in the Albany Wildlife District.
An outline is given of the means adopted to determine which taxa are gazetted as rare, the legal provisions for their protection and the biological data being sought for their management.

Fisheries Report No 45 - The Short Term Effects Of Brush Harvesting On The Kwongan Vegetation At Eneabba, Western Australia, E. A. Griffin, A. J. M. Hopkins
Fisheries Research Reports
Areas of the kwongan vegetation south of Eneabba are currently being harvested to provide brush for rehabilitation after mining. Because of the botanical importance of the Eneabba kwongan, a study of the effects of the harvesting was initiated. Three areas with different harvest histories were sampled using quadrats paired across cut/uncut boundaries. Floristic and structural differences between quadrats and between areas were assessed. The store of seed in uncut vegetation was measured.
There was a loss of species as a result of harvesting, at least in the short-term. Many species regenerated by resprouting from buds in damaged stems or in …

Laboubeniales On Semiaquatic Hemiptera. Iv. Addenda To Prolixandromyces, Richard K. Benjamin
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
Three new species of Prolixandromyces (Ascomycetes: Laboulbeniales), all parasites on Velia (Hemiptera: Veliidae), are described and illustrated: P. lingulatus, P. rhinoceralis, and P. tenuis. A key to the five species presently known is given. The two species described originally, P. veliae and P. corniculatus, were found in Michoacan in southern Mexico; the range of P. corniculatus is extended to El Salvador. Prolixandromyces lingulatus and P. rhinoceralis were collected in Nicaragua and P. tenuis m Costa Rica.

Lichen Studies On Allison Savanna, Clifford Wetmore
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
Soil and tree lichens were studied on the Helen Allison Savanna in Anoka County, Minnesota. Sample plots established in parts of the savanna have had fires at various time frequencies, and one section has had no recent fires. Fire has not eliminated any lichen species on the trees but has reduced their frequency in the lower trunk plots. Most soil species of lichens are eliminated by even infrequent fires. Fifty two species were found on trees and 13 species on the soil.
Classification And Protection Status Of Remnant Natural Plant Communities In Arkansas, William F. Pell
Classification And Protection Status Of Remnant Natural Plant Communities In Arkansas, William F. Pell
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
A classification and inventory of Arkansas's remaining tracts of relatively undisturbed vegetation was initiated in 1979. Based on extensive literature surveys and field work, the classification includes five physiognomic classes, 17 cover classes, and 46 cover types, arranged hierarchically. High quality examples of ten of the cover types have been located in designated wilderness or state natural areas, where they are protected by law, while an additional three occur in research natural areas or Forest Service special interest areas. The remaining 33 cover types have no known long-term protection. Lands having wilderness, state natural area, research natural area, or special …
Fluorgraphic Technique For Detecting And Recording Chlorophyll And Its Derivatives On Paper And Thin-Layer Chromatograms, James L. Wickliff
Fluorgraphic Technique For Detecting And Recording Chlorophyll And Its Derivatives On Paper And Thin-Layer Chromatograms, James L. Wickliff
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Light from a blacklight lamp (General Electric BLB) is restricted to a waveband range 360 - 470 nm by cut-off filters consisting of 4cm 1 M aqueous CuSO4 and acrylic plastic sheets. This filtered lamp emission is used to excite the characteristic red fluorescence of chlorophyll and its derivatives on paper or thin-layer chromatograms. Fluorescent spots are detected and recorded by exposure of red-sensitive panchromatic photographic printing paper (Kodak Panalure) to the fluorescing chromatogram. A thin yellow filter interposed between the chromatogram and the photo print paper restricts the detected fluorescence to wavelengths greater than about 500 nm. Standard development …

Cover Of Plants With Extrafloral Nectaries At Four Northern California Sites, Kathleen H. Keeler
Cover Of Plants With Extrafloral Nectaries At Four Northern California Sites, Kathleen H. Keeler
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Percent cover of plants with extrafloral nectaries was investigated in three California habitats with the same physiognomy as habitats previously studied in Nebraska (perennial native grassland, riparian forest, deciduous forest). In contrast to Nebraska where cover of plants with extrafloral nectaries reached 14 percent, no plants with extrafloral nectaries were found in any California transect. Chaparral was also studied; no plants with extrafloral nectaries were found.
A Survey Of Selected Economic Plants, Virgil S. Priebe
A Survey Of Selected Economic Plants, Virgil S. Priebe
Masters Theses
A library research project was done to gain information on the ethnic uses of plants cited in C. B. Arzeni and B. N. McKnight's "Ethnobotany", a workbook used in conjunction with Botany classes 2320 and 5452 offered at Eastern Illinois University at Charleston. The workbook represents a series of exercises on plants and their impact and importance to man. At present, there is no single book that offers explanations and comments on the diversity of plants that appear in this workbook. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to bring together such information in one work, with the hope that …

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
The primary aim of this work is to enable the user to identify the flowering plants of South Padre Island; however, it should be useful for identification of plants on other Texas barrier islands and on the Mexican barrier islands. We hope that the keys will aid teachers, students, coastal zone managers, and individuals conducting environmental impact assessments.

An Analysis Of Cadmium And Lead Uptake In Hydroponically Grown Corn Seedlings, Julie Jones Medlin
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to analyze selected growth parameters of hydroponically grown corn seedlings (Zea mays) in relation to the uptake of the heavy metals, lead and cadmium. The corn seedlings were treated with various concentrations of lead and cadmium at different levels of pH, and phosphate and ferric ion concentrations. Root and shoot lengths were measured before and after heavy metal treatment to determine the relative growth in the different treatment solutions. Wet and dry weights were also obtained. The plant material was digested with nitric and perchloric acids in preparation for analysis for heavy metal content …

Mineral Compostition Of Atriplex Hymenelytra Growing In The Northern Mojave Desert, A. Wallace, E. M. Romney, R. B. Hunter, J. E. Kinnear, G. V. Alexander
Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs
Fifty samples of Atriplex hymenelytra (Torr.) S. Wats, were collected from several different locations in southern Nevada and California to test variability in mineral composition. Only Na, V, P. Ca, Mg, Mn, and Sr in the samples appeared to represent a uniform population resulting in normal curves for frequency distribution. Even so, about 40 percent of the variance for these elements was due to location. All elements differed enough with location so that no element really represented a uniform population. The coefficient of variation for most elements was over 40 percent and one was over 100 percent. The proportion of …
