Distribution And Ecological Significance Of On-Farm Bushland Remnants In The Southern Wheatbelt Region Of Western Australia, F Mollemans, G Beeston
Distribution And Ecological Significance Of On-Farm Bushland Remnants In The Southern Wheatbelt Region Of Western Australia, F Mollemans, G Beeston
Soil conservation survey collection
The Southern Wheatbelt Region Remnant Vegetation Survey was funded by the Save the Bush program, and aimed at surveying pieces of on-farm remnant vegetation in the "Great Southern" of Western Australia. At the outset a total of 13 shires were selected for survey, namely: Broomehill, Corrigin, Dumbleyung, Katanning, Kent, Kondinin, Kulin, Lake Grace, Narrogin, Tambellup, Wagin, Wickepin, Woodanilling. However, time constraints (available funding indicated a time frame of 40 weeks for the project to be completed) meant that subsequently Kent and Lake Grace shires (two of the largest) had to be dropped from the survey to allow for proper completion …

Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Series
The research reports in this publication represent one year of results; therefore, these results should not be used as a basis for longterm recommendations. Several research reports in this publication dealing with soil fertility also appear in Arkansas Soil Fertility Studies 1991, Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Series 421. This duplication is the result of the overlap in research coverage between the two series and our effort to inform Arkansas rice producers of all the research being conducted with funds from the rice check-off.

Dna Extraction From Preserved Trout Tissues, D. K. Shiozawa, J. Kudo, R. P. Evans, S. R. Woodward, R. N. Williams
Great Basin Naturalist
We have adapted techniques developed for the extraction of DNA from formalin-fixed, paraffin-imbedded human tissues for use on preserved fish tissues. DNA was successfully extracted and the d-loop region of mitochondrial DNA was amplified with the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The sequences of the amplified DNA from preserved and modern samples were identical. These techniques were also applied to fin tissue treated with a variety of preservatives. Extraction of DNA from ethyl alcohol and air-dried fin tissues gave yields equivalent to those from frozen tissues. Extraction of DNA from preserved museum specimens of rare or extinct taxa could significantly increase …

A Survey Of Mucilaginous Testa In Chamaesyce, Martha S. Jordan, W. John Hayden
Biology Faculty Publications
Seeds of Chamaesyce were studied for presence of mucilaginous testa. Samples were selected to represent all major systematic sections within the genus. Observations were made with a dissecting microscope following brief hydration of seeds; additional SEM observations of both intact and fractured dry seeds were made for selected species. With few exceptions, most of Boissier's subsections test positively for seed mucilage; however, mucilage is generally absent in subsections Gymnadeniae and "Sclerophyllae", for which absence of mucilage is regarded as secondary loss from mucilagionus ancestors. Although mucilage production is associated with a well-defined subepidermal layer of macroesclereids, it is …

Herbicide Trials On Field Crops 1991, Robert Frans, Marilyn Mcclelland, David Jordan
Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Series
Herbicidal weed control is economically important for production of field crops. Field experiments are conducted annually in Arkansas to evaluate the activity of developmental ancommercial herbicides for selective control of weeds in several important crops. These experiments serve both industry and Arkansas agriculture by providing information on the selectivity of herbicides still in the developmental stage and by comparing the activity of these new herbicides with that of recommended herbicides.

Varieties and advanced strains of cotton were evaluated in 1991 by the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station. Varieties and some advanced breeding lines were evaluated in the 1991 Arkansas Cotton Variety Test. Entries in the 1991 Commercial Cotton Strain Test included both released varieties that have not been evaluated in Arkansas and advanced breeding lines that may soon be available to producers.
Nonglandular Trichomes Of Californian And Hawaiian Tarweeds, Andrew A. Maclachlan, Sherwin Carlquist
Nonglandular Trichomes Of Californian And Hawaiian Tarweeds, Andrew A. Maclachlan, Sherwin Carlquist
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
The purpose of this paper was to demonstrate the diversity in nonglandular trichome morphology of tarweeds at the ultrastructural level, and to propose categories for the morphologies reported for such trichomes. Using light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the authors surveyed 31 species of II genera of tarweeds from California and three genera of tarweeds from Hawaii. Trichome cell wall thickness in the Californian species ranged from 1 to 6 ~μm, whereas in the Hawaiian species trichome cell wall thickness ranged from 1 to 14 ~μm. Based on their surface appearance using SEM, trichomes were grouped into four categories: grooved; …
Wood Anatomy Of Lamiaceae. A Survey, With Comments On Vascular And Vasicentric Tracheids, Sherwin Carlquist
Wood Anatomy Of Lamiaceae. A Survey, With Comments On Vascular And Vasicentric Tracheids, Sherwin Carlquist
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
Quantitative and qualitative data are presented for 44 collections representing 42 species in 27 genera. Lamiaceae basically have: vessels with simple perforation plates; vessel-to-vessel pitting alternate; imperforate tracheary elements all libriform fibers, fibers commonly septate; axial parenchyma scanty vasicentric; rays Heterogeneous Type IIB. These features ally Lamiaceae closely with Verbenaceae. In addition to the Mesomorphy ratio (based on vessel element dimensions), features that indicate wood xeromorphy in Lamiaceae, in probable increasing order of importance are: presence of indistinct to marked growth rings; presence of helical thickenings in vessels; presence of vasicentric or vascular tracheids; presence of vessel groups averaging three …

Cupulomyces, A New Genus Of Laboulbeniales (Asomycetes) Based On Stigmatomyces Lasiochili, Richard K. Benjamin
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
A new genus of Laboulbeniales, Cupulomyces, is described. Its type species, C. lasiochili, is based on Stigmatomyces lasiochili, originally described by Roland Thaxter in I 917. This taxon subsequently has been classified in two other genera, Hesperomyces and Acompsomyces. Structure and development of the thallus of C. lasiochili are described and illustrated with photographs and line drawings. Distinctive features of the receptacle, appendage, and perithecium warrant recognition of a new genus.
An Updated Phylogenetic Classification Of The Flowering Plants, Robert F. Thorne
An Updated Phylogenetic Classification Of The Flowering Plants, Robert F. Thorne
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
This update of my classification of the flowering plants, or Angiospermae, is based upon about 800 pertinent books, monographs, and other botanical papers published since my last synopsis appeared in the Nordic Journal of Science in 1983. Also I have narrowed my family- and ordinal-gap concepts to bring acceptance of family and ordinal limits more in line with those of current taxonomists. This new information and the shift in my phylogenetic philosophy have caused significant changes in my interpretation of relationships and numbers and content of taxa. Also the ending "-anae" has been accepted for superorders in place in the …
