Arkansas Field Botany (Flora And Vegetation) Bibliography (1988-2000), James H. Peck, C. Theo Witsell, Thomas L. Foti

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The floristic richness and diversity of vegetation in Arkansas continues to require and stimulate a growing body of taxonomic and ecological research publications. Peck and Peck (1988) listed 766 references, including those of the two prior lists. Since then we have gathered 417 additional references. The total list now contains 1,183 references, with 70% prepared or published since 1970. This update is provided for four reasons: 1) to compile a comprehensive source to direct and facilitate future studies, 2) to provide easier access to many reports not normally located in electronic databases, 3) to improve communications with botanists outside Arkansas, …

Twenty-three entries of grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench), including eight inbred lines (five males and three females) and 15 hybrids, were evaluated to determine the proportion of γ, αII, and β-αI-kafirins and their association with contents of crude protein, fat, and starch; protein digestibility; in vitro dry matter disappearance; and seed weight. The male lines included three normal-seeded lines (TX2737, TX435, and P954063) and two large-seeded lines (Eastin1 and PL-1). Female lines consisted of three common U.S. seed parent lines (Wheatland, Redlan, and SA3042). The lines and their hybrids were grown under dryland conditions at two locations in …

Seed Physiology, Production & Technology: Germination, Emergence, And Yield Of 20 Plant-Color, Seed-Color Near-Isogenic Lines Of Grain Sorghum, Jeffrey F. Pedersen, J. J. Toy

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Although there is growing demand for sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] with white seed and tan plant color, there is limited information on the overall agronomic fitness of sorghum with these characters. A set of experiments was conducted to evaluate the combined effects of plant color and seed color on sorghum germination, emergence, and agronomic performance. Twenty near-isogenic lines with red seed/tan plant (RT), red seed/purple plant (RP), white seed/ tan plant (WT), white seed/purple plant (WP) phenotypes were tested under field and laboratory conditions. Plant color X seed color interactions were not significant. Purple plant color phenotypes had higher …

Heavy Metal Accumulation And Detoxification Mechanisms In Plants, Abdul R. Memon, Di̇ğdem Aktoprakligi̇l, Ayli̇n Özdemi̇r, Anastassiia Vertii Jan 2001

Heavy Metal Accumulation And Detoxification Mechanisms In Plants, Abdul R. Memon, Di̇ğdem Aktoprakligi̇l, Ayli̇n Özdemi̇r, Anastassiia Vertii

Turkish Journal of Botany

Toxic metal contamination of soil, aqueous waste streams and groundwater causes major environmental and human health problems. The most commonly used methods for dealing with heavy metal pollution are still extremely costly. Phytoremediation is the use of plants to extract, sequester and/or detoxify pollutants and is a new and powerful technique for environmental clean-up. Plants are ideal agents for soil and water remediation because of their unique genetic, biochemical and physiological properties. Considerable advances have been made in recent decades in developing endemic or genetically engineered plants for the remediation of environmental clean-up. In the present review, current knowledge about …

The Low Above-Zero Temperature Effect In The Zone Of Roots On Nitrate Reductase Activity In Pea Organs In The Process Of Vegetating, G. G. Vasilieva, N. V. Mironova, A. K. Glyanko Jan 2001

The Low Above-Zero Temperature Effect In The Zone Of Roots On Nitrate Reductase Activity In Pea Organs In The Process Of Vegetating, G. G. Vasilieva, N. V. Mironova, A. K. Glyanko

Turkish Journal of Botany

Experiments with pea (Pisum sativum L.) cv. Marat) in a phytotron chamber showed that the process of nitrate assimilation in pea organs depends on temperature in the zone of the roots and on the phase of development of the plants. The potential of tissues of different organs for nitrate reduction was compared to the amount of nitrates which they accumalated. A decrease in nitrate reductase activity during certain phases of development is assumed to be related to the process of formation and functioning of nodules.

Using Upper Boundary Constraints To Quantify Competitive Response Of Desert Annuals, Laura M. Lessin, Andrew R. Dyer, Deborah E. Goldberg Jan 2001

Using Upper Boundary Constraints To Quantify Competitive Response Of Desert Annuals, Laura M. Lessin, Andrew R. Dyer, Deborah E. Goldberg

Faculty Publications

Using a target-neighborhood approach with six annual dicot species in the Negev Desert of Israel, we tested whether neighborhood biomass constrained the upper limit of plant performance and if the slope of the upper boundary was correlated to species trait means, such as relative growth rate (RGR) and seed mass. Target individuals were measured in early spring and then collected at the onset of the dry season along with all naturally occurring neighbors within a 5-cm radius of the target. Using a minimum of 50 samples for each of the six target species, we found no significant relationships between target …

Inventory Of Parks Division Lands For Threatened And Endangered Species Habitats And Exemplary Natural Communities, Steven B. Rolfsmeier

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

The Nebraska Natural Heritage Program is responsible for environmental review of state projects, including those on Parks division properties, to determine if they may impact state-listed threatened and endangered species. In addition, the Program maintains a statewide database on natural communities and rare and imperiled species. This information is used to inform conservation decision-making, including land management decisions, with a goal of conserving Nebraska’s flora and fauna, our natural legacy. The two main objectives of this inventory project were first to improve the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s knowledge of threatened and endangered species and their potential habitat on Parks …

Aquatic Plants Of Nebraska, Michael P. Gutzmer, Robert B. Kaul Jan 2001

Aquatic Plants Of Nebraska, Michael P. Gutzmer, Robert B. Kaul

University of Nebraska State Museum: Programs Information

More than 100 species of aquatic plants grow in Nebraska. Some are entirely submersed for their whole lives, others produce floating leaves and flowers, and still others stand upright, with only their lower stems in water. Examples of these are shown here in this publication.

Vigorous and diverse colonies of aquatic plants are usually a sign of healthy and stable aquatic environments. In fact, the plants themselves stabilize the shorelines, underwater soils, and water chemistry. Waters rich with aquatic plants are rich with aquatic animals and waterfowl, which find cover, breeding habitat, and abundant food. Non-alkaline waters have more aquatic …

Recognition Of Bromus Richardsonii And B. Ciliatus: Evidence From Morphology, Cytology, And Dna Fingerprinting (Poaceae: Bromeae), Paul M. Peterson, Jacques Cayouette, Yasas S. N. Ferdinandez, Bruce Coulman, Ralph E. Chapman

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Since our goal was to determine characteristic differences between Bromus richardsonii and B. ciliates, a discriminate analysis (DA), principal components analysis (PCA), multidimensional scaling (MDS), bivariate analysis, and an amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLP) analysis were undertaken on 93 herbarium specimens and 31 field-collected populations. A cytological survey of B. ciliates, B. richardsonii, and B. mucroglumis confirm previous reports that the first species is diploid (2n = 14) and the latter two are tetraploid (2n = 28). All taxa were correctly classified in the DA and important characters for each of the species were identified. Bromus …

Pollen Flora Of Pakistan-Xxxi Capparidaceae, Anjum Perveen, Mohammad Qaiser Jan 2001

Pollen Flora Of Pakistan-Xxxi Capparidaceae, Anjum Perveen, Mohammad Qaiser

Turkish Journal of Botany

The pollen morphology of 14 species belonging to seven genera viz., Cadaba Forssk., Capparis L., Cleome L., Dipterygium Decaisne, Gynandropsis DC., Maerua Forssk., of the family Capparidaceae, was investigated using a light microscope and scanning microscope. The results confirm the eurypalynous nature of the family. However, palynology is significantly helpful at the specific level. Pollen grains usually radially symmetrical, isopolar, sub-prolate to prolate, generally tricolporate, often tetra-colporate. Tectum generally spinulose, or striate-rugulate, or rugulate-reticulate often sub-psilate.

The Effect Of Glycinebetaine On The Heat Stability Of Photosynthetic Reactions In Thylakoid Membranes, Yagut M. Allakhverdieva, Mahir D. Mamedov, Ralphreed A. Gasanov Jan 2001

The Effect Of Glycinebetaine On The Heat Stability Of Photosynthetic Reactions In Thylakoid Membranes, Yagut M. Allakhverdieva, Mahir D. Mamedov, Ralphreed A. Gasanov

Turkish Journal of Botany

Heat inactivation of various photosynthetic electron transport reactions were investigated in the presence/absence of glycinebetaine (betaine) in unstacked thylakoid membranes from spinach. The activity of Photosystem II (PS II) is more sensitive to heat than that of Cytochrome bf (cyt.bf) and Photosytem I (PS I) complexes. The data obtained clearly demonstrated the protection of PS II and PS I electron transfer by betaine under high temperatures. The phenomena observed are probably related to the stabilization of the higher-order structures of PS II and PS I by betaine.

Callus Development And Indirect Shoot Regeneration From Seedling Explants Of Sugar Beet ( Beta Vulgarisl.) Cultured In Vitro, Songül Gürel, Ekrem Gürel, Zeki̇ Kaya

Turkish Journal of Botany

For callus production, hypocotyl, cotyledon, petiole and leaf explants from seedlings of different sugar beet ( Beta vulgaris L.) breeding lines were cultured on MS medium containing BAP or KIN in combination with NAA or 2,4-D at 0.0, 0.5 or 1.0 mg/l. The use of both auxins in combination with 0.5 mg/l BAP or 0.5 mg/l KIN resulted in greater amounts of callus from all types of explants. However, hypocotyl and cotyledon explants produced significantly more callus than petiole and leaf explants when the means of all lines were taken into account. Two types of callus were usually obtained, white …
