Jasione L., a genus with small flowers in compact ebracteolate heads subtended by involucral bracts, is very isolated in the Campanulaceae. It is mainly a Mediterranean-European genus with c. 15, mostly polymorphic, species, which show evidence of recent speciation, possibly as recent as the last glaciation. In the west of its distributional range, where the greatest morphological variation occurs, there has been much recent investigation on morphology, anatomy, phenetics, molecular evidence and nomenclature. This research has provided considerable evidence for a reduction in the number of taxa that should be recognised. On-going research is focused on more detailed molecular studies …

Seasonal Distribution Of Phytoplankton In Orduzu Dam Lake (Malatya, Turkey), Ahmet Kadri̇ Çeti̇n, Bülent Şen

The species composition and seasonal distribution of phytoplankton in Orduzu Dam Lake was studied for a year. Diatoms (Bacillariophyta) were most diverse, followed by green algae (Chlorophyta), blue-green algae (Cyanophyta), euglenoids (Euglenophyta) and dinoflagellates (Dinophyta). A total of 117 taxa were recorded and the phytoplankton of the lake contained a large number of detached benthic algae. Phytoplankton assemblages were dominated by diatoms in all the periods investigated and centric diatoms were the most abundant. Overall phytoplankton density was high during the spring and summer months and the highest phytoplankton density was observed in August. The abundance of phytoplankton was positively …

In this paper, 66 taxa belonging to 37 genera were determined from the alpine region of Uludağ (Bursa). Buellia leptocline (Flot.) A.Massal. and Lecanora rupicola (L.) Zahlbr. ssp. subplanata (Nyl.) Leuckert & Poelt are new records for Turkey.

A Floristical Study On Poaceae Spp. Growing Naturally In Malatya Province, Turan Arabaci, Bayram Yildiz

This study includes species of Poaceae (Gramineae) growing in Malatya province. According to the grid system used in the Flora of Turkey, the research area is situated in the B6, B7, C6 and C7 squares. Approximately 346 plant specimens were collected from the area. At the end of the study 89 species (101 taxa) belonging to 47 genera were identified. Thidiazuron (TDZ) is among the most active cytokinin like substances and induces greater in vitro shoot proliferation than many other cytokinins in many plant species. Leaf, stem, stem node and cotyledonary node explants of 2 extensively cultivated Turkish lentil cultivars, Ali Dayı and Kayı 91, were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) media supplemented with various concentrations of TDZ. The present study was conducted to develop a rapid and efficient shoot regeneration system suitable for the transformation of lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) using TDZ. This study presents investigations into the morphological, anatomical and ecological features of Tulipa armena Boiss. var. lycica (Baker) Marais. T. armena var. lycica, an endemic species which was collected from the Eskişehir, Alpu-Bozan plantation area and from Kunduzlar Dam and its environs. The species is a new record for Eskişehir. For morphological studies a description and illustrations of T. armena var. lycica are given. The morphological differences were compared with the Flora of Turkey. Trachystemon orientalis (L.) G.Don (Boraginaceae), which is distributed in various habitats in the Black Sea region, was investigated morphologically and anatomically. The flowering branches, leaves and rhizomes of T. orientalis are used as food. This species is a Euro-Siberian floristic element. The genus Trachystemon D.Don is represented by one species in Turkey. In the morphological study it was observed that the species have a perennial root. The rhizome is blackish and 6-10 cm. The stem is 25-50 cm tall and erect. Ditrichum pusillum (Hedw.) Hampe has been collected for the first time from the Western Black Sea region of Turkey. A description of the species is given, along with notes on the ecology and a discussion of the phytogeographic significance. This note will provide better knowledge of the moss flora of Turkey.

Native forest wildflowers of the Midwestern United States forests now compete with agricultural weeds for the attention of insect pollinators. The tiny quantities of nectar secreted by these insect-pollinated flowers are measured using laboratory techniques such as colorimetry. However, these techniques are used with the tacit assumption that nectar sugar identity does not affect estimates of carbohydrate content. I tested this hypothesis using fructose, glucose, and sucrose and found that after reaction with anthrone, fructose products differed from those of other sugars in light absorbance measured by a spectrophotometer. Potential error from using an inappropriate sugar standard is greater than …

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources estimates that fire-maintained, tallgrass savannas once covered approximately 15% oflndiana. During the 1800's, settlers cleared savannas for their rich soils, which are well suited for agricultural use, and fire was suppressed from the remaining savannas because of the threat to farmland. Today, prescribed bums are being used in savannas as a management tool to reduce competition from non-native species, encourage community density, and promote patch dynamics. This research examines how fire affects Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC) in post fire soil samples. CEC is an important soil characteristic that helps to describe soil fertility. With …

All North American species of the chenopodiaceous genus Atriplex known to occur, either through introductions or as indigenous plants, are treated in this paper. The genus is described, keys are provided to the species and infraspecific taxa, and species and infraspecific taxa are described and furnished with discussions. Chromosome numbers (x=9) are recorded for many of the taxa. Distributions are outlined, and maps are provided that show the distribution of each taxon. Arrangement is phylogenetic, with sections and subsections noted, briefly described and discussed. Treated are some 62 species, and a total of 93 taxa included varieties. Lectotypes are selected …

Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Series

The average yield in Arkansas in 2002 was 871 lb lint/acre from 920,000 harvested acres (960,000 planted) for a total of 1.67 million bales at a value of$336.5 million. This yield was second only to the record 877 lb lint/acre achieved in 1994. Last year's crop yield, and the five-year average, on a per acre basis are exceeded in the U.S. Cotton Belt only by California and Arizona. Cotton yields in Arkansas increased steadily during the eighties, but in the last decade yields have leveled off. Furthermore, the last five years have had extreme year-to-year variability in yields, which is …

The Las Vegas Wash (Wash) is the primary drainage for the metropolitan Las Vegas Valley, eventually finding its way into the Colorado River watershed system. Pursuant to the recommendations of the Water Quality Citizens Advisory Committee, the Las Vegas Wash Coordination Committee (LVWCC) was formed in 1998 to develop a comprehensive plan for the long-term stabilization and management of the Wash. Consisting of representatives from 28 government agencies, businesses, environmental groups and citizens, the LVWCC formulated the Las Vegas Wash Comprehensive Adaptive Management Plan (CAMP) and designated the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) as the lead agency for the implementation …
