The eastern Mediterranean region is one of the main areas of the Mediterranean vegetation containing Calabrian cluster pine (Pinus brutia Ten., Pinaceae) forests and terebinth (Pistacia terebinthus L., Anacardiaceae) communities. This study was carried out with the leaves, shoots, leaf litters, and soils of Calabrian cluster pine and terebinth growing on both marl and conglomerate substrata in the eastern Mediterranean region (Turkey) to determine average C, N, P and K contents, and the amounts of humic and fulvic acid in these plant soils. Malcolmia exacoides (DC.) Spreng. (Brassicaceae) is recorded for the first time (C9 Siirt) for the flora of Turkey. The diagnostic characters of M. exacoides are given and its ecology and conservation status are discussed.

The Influence Of Certain Physical And Chemical Variables On The Seasonal Dynamics Of Phytoplankton Assemblages Of A Source Inlet And The Outlet Of The Shallow Hypertrophic Lake Manyas, Turkey, Kemal Çeli̇k, Tuğba Ongun

The relationships between water discharge, temperature, pH, conductivity, turbidity, nitrate, ammonium, phosphate and the seasonal dynamics of phytoplankton assemblages of one of the inlets, which is a source of waste for the lake, and the sole outlet of the shallow hypertrophic Lake Manyas, Turkey, were studied from January 2003 to August 2005. Conductivity, ammonium, nitrate, and phosphate concentrations were higher at the inlet than at the outlet. Diatoms and cyanobacteria were the dominant phytoplankton groups at both stations. Serratula Oligocephala Dc. (Asteraceae), A New Record For The Flora Of Lebanon, Myrna T. Semaan, Ricardus M. Haber

Serratula oligocephala DC. is currently reported as an endemic species of Turkey, where it has limited distribution in east and south Anatolia. Specimens collected from the continental humid slopes beneath the northern summits of the Mount Lebanon Range in the eastern Mediterranean confirm the occurrence of the species in Lebanon.

Studies On The Hornworts And Liverworts Flora Of Antalya, Hati̇ce Özenoğlu Ki̇remi̇t, Atakan Sukatar, İsa Gökler

Turkish Journal of Botany

This study includes a list of hornwort and liverwort flora of Antalya province. It is composed of 2 species belonging to a family of the class Anthocerotopsida and 35 species belonging to 23 families of the class Marchantiopsida of the division Bryophyta. For the C12 grid square of Turkey, 14 liverworts are new records.

Effects Of Salinity: Calcium Interaction On Growth And Nucleic Acid Metabolism In Five Species Of Chenopodiaceae, Essam E. M. Abo-Kassem

Seed germination, seedling growth, and some enzyme activity of nucleic acid metabolism were studied in 5 members of Chenopodiaceae [Beta vulgaris L., Chenopodium quinoa Willd., Spinacea oleracea L., Allenrolfia occidentalis (S.Watson) Kuntze, Atriplex hortensis L.] under NaCl salinity alone or combined with 0.5 mM CaSO_4. High salinity delayed radical emergence and decreased germination percentage in all plants. Combined CaSO_4 reduced inhibition of seed germination in B. vulgaris, S. oleracea, and A. hortensis, but increased it in C. quinoa and A. occidentalis. CaSO_4 reduced plant growth to a greater degree than high salinity did. High salinity decreased total nucleic acid content …

Studies were undertaken for induction of resistance against acute ozone exposure in Rhinacanthus nasutus (L.) Kurz. plants using ozone. Callus induced from Rhinacanthus nasutus leaf explants on Murashige & Skoog's (MS) medium supplemented with 3.40 µM of 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D) were treated with different concentrations of ozone (T_1 = 1.0 µmol mol^{-1} (±0.2), T_2 = 1.5 µmol mol^{-1} (±0.2), T_3 = 2.0 µmol mol^{-1} (±0.2)), and for the control (C) filtered air was supplied. This paper presents a floristic study of Pirreşit Mountain. The research was carried out in 1997 and 1998, and 3500 vascular plant specimens were collected. After the identification of the specimens, the flora was determined as 820 taxa (at specific and infraspecific ranks) belonging to 767 species, 309 genera, and 65 families. The largest families were Asteraceae (125 taxa), Poaceae (89 taxa), and Fabaceae (72 taxa). The largest genera were Astragalus L. (28), Silene L. (23), and Centaurea L. (16). The nomenclature of 51 taxa in 27 genera of Turkish Brassicaceae has been updated to bring the account of the family in line with the current classification and nomenclature. An appendix listing the previous names, current ones, and pertinent bibliographical citations is provided, as well as another listing the taxa with relevant literature published after the second supplement of the Flora of Turkey. The morphological features of Colchicum L. species were studied based on samples collected from the Mediterranean region in Turkey between 2000 and 2004. Typifications, synonym lists, descriptions, ecology, and phytogeography are provided for all Colchicum species and relationships to similar species are discussed. New features were determined that were not previously given in descriptions of Colchicum species in the Flora of Turkey, and useful identification keys (for both flowering material and leafing-fruiting material) were prepared for all Colchicum species in the Mediterranean region of Turkey.

This study was conducted to identify the biodiversity of Myxomycetes growing in Derebucak (Konya) and Akseki (Antalya) districts. The specimens have been collected periodically during field trips in 2002 and 2004. While 2 samples were treated with the moist chamber cultures method in the laboratory, 1 taxon was determined naturally. The samples grown were observed using stereo and light microscopes. The nature of the inheritance of plant height at 60 days, number of flowers per cluster, number of fruits per plant, fruit weight per plant, and number of seeds per fruit was studied from a 10-parent diallel cross of Lycopersicum esculentum Mill. Due to their high general combining ability effects, Pusharubi, Bari-4, and Dynasagor parents were suggested for future hybridisation programmes. For yield, the crosses Deshy x Ratan, Deshy x Epoch, Dynasagor x Ratan, Bari-4 x Pusharubi, and Dynamo x Namdhari had good specific combining ability effects and they were recommended because they produce stable performing rare transgressive segregants. The first genetic transcript map of the soybean genome was created by mapping one SNP in each of 1141 genes in one or more of three recombinant inbred line mapping populations, thus providing a picture of the distribution of genic sequences across the mapped portion of the genome. Singlenucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were discovered via the resequencing of sequence-tagged sites (STSs) developed from expressed sequence tag (EST) sequence. Phytoplankton (Except Bacillariophyceae) Flora Of Lake Gölköy (Bolu), Abuzer Çelekli̇, Meri̇ç Albay, Muzaffer Dügel

The phytoplankton composition of Lake Gölköy was studied by monthly sample collection from 3 littoral and 2 pelagic stations during a 2-year period (June 2003-June 2005). In total, 152 taxa belonging to Chlorophyta (61.8%), Euglenophyta (12.5%), Cyanoprokaryota (10.5%), Pyrrophyta (5.3%), Chrysophyta (4.6%), Cryptophyta (3.9%), Xanthophyta (0.7%), and Prasinophyta (0.7%) were identified. Spirogyra and Scenedesmus were the most abundant genera, with 13 and 10 species, respectively. Some species found in the lake were new records for the Bolu region (e.g., Gonium pectorale Müller, Polytoma cylindraceum Pasher 1927, Provasoliella ovata (Jacobsen) Loeblich, and Anabaena crassa (Lemmermann) Komárková-Legnerová & Cronberg).

This study included 30 plants that were randomly selected from a larger progeny population obtained from a complex intergeneric cross of {C. grandis (L.) Osb. x [C. paradisi Macf. x Poncirus trifoliata (L.) Raf.]} x {[(C. paradisi Macf. x P. trifoliata (L.) Raf.) x C. reticulata Blanco] x [(C. paradisi Macf. x Poncirus trifoliata (L.) Raf.) x C. sinensis (L.) Osb.]}. Genomic DNA was extracted from leaf samples of these plants and analysed for polymorphisms by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), using 10-mer random primers. The Phytoplankton Community (Except Bacillariophyceae) Of Lake Abant (Bolu, Turkey), Abuzer Çelekli̇, Olcay Obali, Okan Külköylüoğlu

A total of 162 phytoplankton species found monthly from 3 littoral and 2 vertical stations between June 2003 and June 2005 were identified from Lake Abant (Bolu, Turkey). Some species, such as Trachelomonas volvocina Ehrenberg, Cryptomonas ovata Ehrenberg, and Ceratium hirundinella (Müller) Dujardin showed frequent occurrence almost every month, but others had specific seasonality. Phytoplankton composition of this lake was dominated by Chlorophyta, accounting for about 58.6% of the species richness. Phytoplankton composition in Lake Abant included many new reported (> 30) taxa for the algal flora of Turkey.

Evaluation Of Karyotype Status Of Musa L. Somaclonal Variants (Musaceae: Zingiberales), Gordian C. Obute, Philip C. Aziagba

Turkish Journal of Botany

Tissue culture regenerated materials of Musa L. spp. (banana and plantain) along with their somaclonal variants were assessed for karyotype abnormalities to be used as indicators for rapid cytological marking. The results show that although slight variations were noted in karyomorphometric characters, like chromosome number, arm length, total chromosome length, and total chromosome volume, these were not significant (P £ 0.05). Therefore, chromosomal abnormalities may not be accurate markers for somaclonal variation in these species. The need to not overemphasise chromosomal instability resulting from culture techniques was highlighted. Other possible causes of somaclonal variations were proposed to explain this phenomenon …

Antioxidative Potentials As A Protective Mechanism In Catharanthus Roseus (L.) G.Don. Plants Under Salinity Stress, Cheruth Abdul Jaleel, Ragupathi Gopi, Paramasivam Manivannan, Rajaram Panneerselvam

Antioxidant responses were analysed in Catharanthus roseus (L.) G.Don. under 0, 50 and 100 mM NaCl in order to investigate the plant´s protective mechanisms against long-term salt-induced oxidative stress. The NaCl treatments were repeated in 4 different stages of growth, i.e. 30, 45, 60 and 75 days after sowing (DAS). The plants were uprooted randomly 90 DAS and the non-enzymatic and enzymatic antioxidant potentials were analysed. High salinity caused a decrease in reduced glutathione (GSH) and an enhancement in total ascorbate (AA) content and the antioxidant enzyme and ascorbate peroxidase (APX, EC 1.11.1.11) activities. Specimens of macrofungi were collected from localities on Honaz Mountain (Denizli) in 2005 and 2006, particularly during autumn and spring. Field and laboratory studies revealed a total of 109 taxa belonging to 64 genera, 32 families and 2 classes. Six taxa belong to Ascomycetes and 103 to Basidiomycetes.

Plantago holosteum Scop. and P. atrata Hoppe plant communities contribute to the vegetation mosaic in the humid places on different substrata in the sub-alpine and alpine belts of Uludağ Mountain, Bursa, Turkey. Nitrogen mineralisation in the soils of these 2 mat communities was investigated under controlled conditions (60% WHC, 20 °C). The monotypic Leptaleum DC. (Cruciferae/Brassicaceae) is recorded for the first time from Turkey. The diagnostic characters of Leptaleum filifolium (Willd.) DC. are given and its ecology and conservation status are discussed.

Two New Records From Lebanon: Chamaesyce Nutans (Lag.) Small (Euphorbiaceae) And Eleusine Indica (L.) Gaertner (Poaceae), Ricardus M. Haber, Myrna T. Semaan

Turkish Journal of Botany

Chamaesyce nutans (Lag.) Small (Euphorbiaceae) and Eleusine indica (L.) Gaertner (Poaceae) are described as new records for the flora of Lebanon. Specimens of C. nutans collected from roadsides and rocks in a middle mountain forest confirm the occurrence of the species on the western slopes of the Mount Lebanon Range. Additionally, specimens of E. indica were collected from wasteland and roadsides in the coastal town of Kaslik. The species were observed to thrive abundantly in similar habitats along the coastal urban zone of Lebanon.

Comments on habitat, substrata and spore structures for 9 lichenicolous fungi species from Turkey are given. Endococcus verrucosus Hafellner and Rosellinula haplospora (Th.Fr. & Almqu. ex Th.Fr.) R.Sant. are new records for Turkey.
