Phylogenetic Analyses Of Amaranthaceae Based On Matk Dna Sequence Data With Emphasis On West African Species, Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe, Mark Chase

Comparative sequencing of the chloroplast matK coding and non-coding regions was used to examine relationship among the species of Amaranthaceae with emphasis on the West African species and other closely related family such as Chenopodiaceae, Portulacaceae, and Caryophyllaceae. Phylogenetic analysis of the matK sequences alone and in combination using maximum parsimony methods produced monophyletic lineage of Amaranthaceae-Chenopodiaceae. Our results indicated that a polyphyletic Celosieae as sister to an Amaranthus-Chemissoa lineage. Subfamily Amaranthoideae is paraphyletic to the core Gomphrenoids. This study also shows that the polyphyly of Amarantheae is apparent and so is the polyphyly of Amaranthinae.

Crambe hispanica L., collected during the floristic study of Anamurium Antique City (Anamur, Mersin province), is reported as a new record for the flora of Turkey. The new record is described and illustrated, and a distribution map is presented.

Phellinus Sulphurascens (Hymenochaetaceae, Basidiomycota): A Very Rare Wood-Decay Fungus In Europe Collected In Turkey, Hasan Hüseyi̇n Doğan, Mitko Karadelev

Phellinus sulphurascens Pilát was collected from juniper tree stumps (Juniperus excelsa and J. foetidissima) in two different localities situated in the Mediterranean region of Turkey. This very rare species is known in Europe only from the Ural Mountains in Russia. This fungus is an aggressive root rot pathogen associated with Douglas fir and other conifers in North America. This is the first report on juniper as a new host outside of its known distribution area.

A. daphneola O.Schwarz (Rubiaceae) was originally recorded from a single location on Nif Mountain (Kemalpaşa) in western Turkey. This study was carried out from 2001 to 2004 to investigate the causes of this endemic species^{'} restricted distribution. To that end, the environmental conditions and reproductive biology of the species were studied. As a result of field investigations, 4 additional locations were identified. These 5 localities (the peak of Nif Mountain, Alaca Mountain, Ayrıca Mountain, Bölme Hill, and another locality west of Nif Mountain) encompass an area of 2.5 km^2. Rhododendrons form dominating species all along the temperate, subalpine and alpine zones in the Sikkim Himalaya. Rhododendron L. is one of the largest genus of the Ericaceae family, occurring in the higher altitudes having ecological significance and economic importance in addition to its splendiferous flowers. It has aesthetic, sacred, aromatic, medicinal and fuelwood values. There are 36 species with 45 different forms (including subspecies and varieties) in the Sikkim Himalaya. New Records For The Turkish Macrofungi From Amasya Province, Si̇nan Aktaş, Celaleddi̇n Öztürk, Giyasetti̇n Kaşik, Hasan Hüseyi̇n Doğan

Turkish Journal of Botany

Macrofungi specimens were collected from different localities in Amasya province between 2002 and 2005, particularly during the months of spring and autumn. In all, 16 species were identified as new records; 1 species belongs to Ascomycetes and the other 15 species belong to Basidiomycetes. These new species are Hypoxylon multiforme, Polyporus melanopus, Hygrophorus pratensis var. pratensis, Hygrocybe ovina, Clitocybe ornamentalis, Hemimycena pseudocrispula, Mycena adscendens, Baespora myriadophylla, Entoloma mutabilipes, Parasola hemerobia, Conocybe blattaria, Psilocybe phyllogena, Inocybe squamata, Gymnopilus stabilis, Cortinarius evernius, and Galerina mycenoides.

Study Of Seasonal Influences On Algal Biodiversity In The River Yarqon (Central Israel) By Bio-Indication And Canonical Correspondence Analysis (Cca), Sophia Barinova, Moti Tavassi

In our research conducted in the River Yarqon during 2003-2006, we identified 313 taxa of algae and cyanobacteria belonging to 8 taxonomical divisions. Out of these 313 taxa, 268 taxa (85.6%) were indicators of environmental conditions that characterised the river water as alkaline with medium mineralisation. In the rainy and dry seasons the algal taxonomic compositions were very different, with prevailing diatoms in the winter and cyabobacteria and greens in summer. Bio-indication shows that the taxonomic preference for the self-purification process was more intensive during the rainy season, while the low level of river water in the dry season stressed …

The authors investigated the influence of periphyton that abundantly overgrow stalks of reeds (reed-periphyton) submerged in water [Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Stewdel], especially the old ones, on the occurrence of mycoflora species in different trophic seasons in the water of 4 trophically different water bodies. The seeds and snake exuviae were used as bait. In the spring, diatoms were the predominant group of algae forming the periphyton on old reed stalks, green algae predominated in the summer, and cyanobacteria in the autumn. Dynamics Of 2,4-D In Generation Of Cytomorphological Variants In An Important Anticancerous And Antihepatotoxic Herb – Cichorium Intybus L., Zeba Khan, Mohammad Yunus Khalil Ansari, Honey Gupta, Sana Chaudhary

Turkish Journal of Botany

The genotoxic effect of 2,4-D was investigated in chicory (2n = 18). At 100 ppm concentration 4 variants differing in morphological traits were isolated and subjected to chromosomal analysis. Morphological variations in shape, height, and yield parameters were observed. Different cytological anomalies such as univalents, multivalents, bridges, laggards, chromosome stickiness, and polyads occurred in all 4 isolates. However, the frequency of these chromosomal irregularities decreased at anaphase, exhibiting recovery at later stages. Thus the above concentration of growth hormone 2,4-D can be effectively incorporated for raising viable mutants in this medicinally useful herb.

Drought stress is considered a restricting factor for plant products; therefore many compounds were applied to minimise the harmful effects of stress. One type of these compounds that have antioxidative characteristics is brassinosteroids. In this experiment, when 4 fully expanded leaves of tomato plants appeared, 24-epibrassinolide (24-EBL) was sprayed onto the leaves at 0.01 and 1 µM concentrations for 3 days with a 1-day interval. Three levels of drought stress (0, 3, and 5 days withholding water) were applied. Phenotypic characterization of soybean event 335-13, which possesses oil with an increased oleic acid content (> 85%) and reduced palmitic acid content (< 5%), was conducted across multiple environments during 2004 and 2005. Under these conditions, the stability of the novel fatty acid profile of the oil was not influenced by environment. Importantly, the novel soybean event 335-13 was not compromised in yield in both irrigated and non-irrigated production schemes. Moreover, seed characteristics, including total oil and protein, as well as amino acid profile, were not altered as a result of the large shift in the fatty acid profile. The novel oil trait was inherited in a simple Mendelian fashion. The event 335-13 was also evaluated as a feedstock for biodiesel. Extruded oil from event 335-13 produced a biodiesel with improved cold flow and enhanced oxidative stability, two critical fuel parameters that can limit the utility of this renewable transportation fuel.

Hurricanes are a relatively common occurrence along the gulf coast of Texas. This research analyzed the effect hurricanes have on the growth and structure of forests in southeastem_Texas. Increment cores were taken from numerous species within the Neches Bottom Unit of the Big Thicket National Preserve and the Wier Woods Nature Preserve to analyze how hurricanes affect the structure of these forests. Background: Animal experiments document effects of grape juice on cognitive performance and motor skills, and observational studies in humans suggest an inverse association between flavonoid intake and cognitive decline. These effects may be related to the antioxidant properties of polyphenols. Juice consumption and flavonoid intake may also affect appetite. Objective: To study the acute effects of grape juice consumption on appetite, mood and implicit memory during a time of increased lethargy - the post-lunch dip. Historical ecology is an emerging and interdisciplinary field that seeks to explain the changes in ecosystems over time through a synthesis of information derived from human records and biological data. Disturbances such as fire have the potential to remove genetic variation, but seed banks may counter this loss by restoring alleles through a reservoir effect. We used allozyme analysis to characterize genetic change in two populations of the perennial Hypericum cumulicola, an endemic of the fire-prone Florida scrub. We assessed genetic variation before and 1, 2, and 3 years after fire that killed nearly all aboveground plants. Populations increased in size following fire, with most seedlings likely recruited from a persistent seed bank. Four of five loci were variable. Most alleles were present in low frequencies, but our large sample …

Of the 20 Tier I listed species, 4 are listed as either Endangered or Threatened on the Threatened & Endangered Species System (TESS) list (USFWS 2008), with Gaura neomexicana ssp. coloradensis being one of these four.
