An Alternative Approach In Sectioning Of Archaeological Woods: The Case Of Quercus Pontica, Bedri̇ Serdar, Reha Mazlum
Turkish Journal of Botany
An alternative approach to the sectioning of archaeological woods is presented in this paper. The samples that we study were obtained through the excavations carried out in Yenikapı (Marmaray), İstanbul. Neolithic-aged wood samples were studied and identified using the frozen sliding microtome method. This method was utilized for the cross-sectioning of a leaf in 1984 for the first time. This work extends its usage by exploiting the method for the purpose of sectioning Neolithic-aged wood samples and providing a case of Quercus pontica C.Koch.

The phylogeny of Astragalus L. section Anthylloidei DC. and its interrelationship with allies were examined. The study was conducted using nrDNA ITS and plastid rpl32-trnL_{(UAG)} sequences. Astragalus sect. Anthylloidei is nonmonophyletic, and its members are scattered across the tree in 4 well-supported clades and intermixed with members of other spiny sections. All the multispecific informal groups of the section, with the exception of A. murinus Boiss. group, are not monophyletic. Morphological character evolution was mapped on the molecular tree. Our results suggest that morphology cannot elucidate infrageneric relationships in spiny Astragalus accurately; analyzed characters have evolved several times in sect. …

Cystatin responses in sugarcane plants under drought stress have not previously been reported. To test the hypothesis that sugar cane cystatin can function as an osmotic stress tolerance gene, transgenic Pichia pastoris (GS115) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (A2279) strains with the ability to express sugarcane cystatin were constructed. The osmotic stress tolerance of the transgenic yeasts was then evaluated, and it was found that the transgenic Pichia pastoris (GS115) and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (A2279) had increased growth and increased osmotic stress tolerance. To gain a greater understanding of the responses of sugarcane cystatin to drought, 1 drought-susceptible and 3 drought-tolerant sugarcane cultivars …

A Preliminary Systematic Analysis Of The Species Of Genus Physaria (Brassicaceae) Of Wyoming, Kayla Rethwisch
Honors Program Theses
Physaria is a recent and rapidly evolving genus of plants in the Brassicaceae family. Particularly problematic are the taxa in the “old” Physaria sensu stricto found in Wyoming, characterized by highly inflated, didymous fruits. Due to the plants in this group being of recent origin, the relationships among them are unknown. This study examined several samples from each taxon in a preliminary study of the taxonomy of these species. The resulting phylogenies were analyzed to determine relatedness among the species. By looking at gene regions, sections on the genomic sequence, it is possible to determine how these various plants are …

Development Of Leaf Shape And Vein Homologies In Five Species Of The Genus Ipomoea (Convolvulaceae), Austin William Jones
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Angiosperm leaves are extremely variable in form while predominantly maintaining the function of the primary photosynthetic organ of the plant. Changes in leaf form can result from myriad physiological processes which may be influenced by ecology, physical stimuli, phylogeny, or other factors. In studying the development of divergent leaf forms among closely related species, conserved morphological elements may be identified that are not apparent in the mature form. The genus Ipomoea (Convolvulaceae) contains over 600 species and a wide range in leaf shapes. Five species, I. purpurea, I. coccinea, I. sloteri, I. quamoclit, and I. cairica show a range in …

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Harmful algal blooms are exponential increases in autotrophic microorganisms that proliferate in such a way that the surrounding environment, the local economy and the health of regional populations are negatively affected. Among the causes of these blooms are anthropogenic inputs of excess nitrogen and phosphorus into the environment through overfertilization. Floating treatment wetlands (FTW) have emerged as a novel method of reducing the negative impacts of these nutrient inputs by using artificial rafts to float normally emergent wetland plants on the surface of water bodies to assimilate excess nutrients. Because their use is so new, only limited research has been …

Biological Sciences
Chorro Creek bog thistle (Cirsium fontinale var. obispoense) is a federally endangered variety of Fountain thistle endemic to western San Luis Obispo County. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service knows of nineteen populations, many with multiple colonies. A population was discovered in the Reservoir Canyon Natural Reserve in 2001, but has not been monitored or described since the time of its discovery. In fall of 2013, a census of the population was performed, the four colonies were mapped, and a floristic survey was conducted. A field experiment was initiated to determine if reducing the riparian canopy coverage can …
