Managing Grazing Lands To Improve Soils And Promote Climate Change Adaptation And Mitigation: A Global Synthesis, Marcia Delonge, Andrea D. Basche
Managing Grazing Lands To Improve Soils And Promote Climate Change Adaptation And Mitigation: A Global Synthesis, Marcia Delonge, Andrea D. Basche
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
The potential to improve soils to help farmers and ranchers adapt to and mitigate climate change has generated significant enthusiasm. Within this discussion, grasslands have surfaced as being particularly important, due to their geographic range, their capacity to store substantial quantities of carbon relative to cultivated croplands and their potential role in mitigating droughts and floods. However, leveraging grasslands for climate change mitigation and adaptation will require a better understanding of how farmers and ranchers who rely on them for their livelihoods can improve management and related outcomes. To investigate opportunities for such improvements, we conducted a meta-analysis of field …

Interesting, Provocative, And Enigmatic: Morphological Observations On Southeastern Quillworts (Isoetes Isoetaceae, Lycopodiophyta, Rebecca D. Bray, Peter W. Schafran, Lytton J. Musselman
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
The unique morphology of quillworts has received limited attention, and such studies have been limited to only a few species. Our extensive field work during the past two decades has revealed variation in the structures of the plant, including the rhizomorph, scales, phyllopodia, and abscission caps. Polarity of the axes of southeastern quillwort rhizomorphs varies from discoid (most species), to elongate, to upright with axis branching in several species. In species of intermittent streams, these branched rhizomorphs produce plantlets that break off in running water. Scales are tiny brown or black structures in alternating whorls with sporophylls (leaves). They are …
Plant Community Response To Disturbances In Nebraska Sandhills Upland Prairie, Josiah D. Dallmann
Plant Community Response To Disturbances In Nebraska Sandhills Upland Prairie, Josiah D. Dallmann
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Historically, disturbances shaped prairie ecosystems both directly through events like fire and soil moving by animals, as well as indirectly through dynamic rainfall patterns and periodic flux in seed availabilities. We hypothesized that the implementation of several distinct disturbance events in Nebraska Sandhills upland prairie would have measurable effects on plant community composition. We implemented mid-spring fire, soil disturbance in the form of disking, seed addition of native forbs on disked plots, as well as early summer supplemental watering (to mimic minor rainfall events during abnormally dry periods) during 2016 and 2017. Plant community response during the first and second …

Plastid Dna Variation Of The Endemic Species Oxytropis Glandulosa Turcz. (Fabaceae), Alla Kholina, Marina Kozyrenko, Elena Artyukova, Denis Sandanov, Inessa Selyutina, Daba Chimitov
Turkish Journal of Botany
Oxytropis glandulosa Turcz. (Fabaceae) is a rare perennial plant endemic to Buryatia (Russia). We sequenced three intergenic spacers (the psbA−trnH, trnL−trnF, and trnS−trnG) of chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) in specimens of four populations from two geographic regions (Barguzin and Yeravna depressions) within this species range. The levels of haplotype and nucleotide diversity varied in the range of 0.133−0.911 and 0.0002−0.0059, respectively. The highest values of these parameters are characteristic of populations located in the Barguzin depression. Variable sites detected within the intergenic spacers allowed the identification of eleven haplotypes; nine of them were found in the populations from the Barguzin depression …

Properties, Variations, Roles, And Potential Applications Of Epicuticular Wax: A Review, Priyal Sharma, Shankar Lal Kothari, Mahender Rathore, Vinod Gour
Turkish Journal of Botany
The cuticular wax layer covers the aerial surface of plants and acts as a barrier between plants and the environment. The cuticle plays a key role in the protection of plants from pathogens, UV light, and transpiration. Variation in the wax quality and quantity is influenced by factors like the solvent used for extraction, species, ontogeny, and season. Compounds isolated from the cuticle layer have been studied by various methods and were found to play an important role from the ecological and physiological points of view. These compounds include esters, alcohols, ether, alkane, and aldehydes. Nonpolar compounds help reduce water …

In recent years, transgenic approaches have played a significant role in improving traits that help plants overcome abiotic stresses. Combined gene discovery and functional genomics have helped identify diversified mechanisms and gene families, which improved productivity under various abiotic stresses. We report on the genetic stability and persistent morphological features of transgenic pea (Pisum sativum L.) plants harboring the dicistronic vector construct pG0229MASnhx1/luc over five generations. In addition to salt stress tolerance, the transgenic plants showed frost tolerance compared to wild-type (WT) plants. Frost tolerance of AtNHX1 transgenic pea plants was unexpected and needs further investigation. We report morphological and …

Its leaves, herb, flowers, and seeds are a source of bioactive compounds. Given the high concentration of essential fatty acids, borage is used in many branches of industry. The aim of this study was to examine the structure of trichomes and to carry out histochemical labeling of selected groups of biologically active compounds contained in secretory cells. Anatomical traits of leaves, stems, and pedicels were investigated using bright-field light, fluorescence, and scanning electron microscopy. Characteristic features of the …

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are important noncoding regulatory RNAs. They are expressed endogenously and are 18-26 nucleotides in length. These small molecules are conserved evolutionarily within the same kingdom and their conserved nature becomes an important logical tool for the quest of conserved miRNAs in other species by homology search using bioinformatics tools. Cherry (Prunus avium L.) is one of the important and nutritious species of the family Rosaceae, mainly distributed in temperate climate. This research is an attempt to identify and characterize conserved miRNAs in cherry from express sequence tags (ESTs). Bioinformatics analysis of cherry ESTs resulted in the identification of …

Habitat Effects And Differences In The Reproductive Success Oforchis Punctulata And Orchis Purpurea (Orchidaceae), Spyros Tsiftsis, Vladan Djordjevic
Turkish Journal of Botany
The pollination success of two nonrewarding orchids in two coarse habitats was examined. The comparative results of Orchis punctulata and O. purpurea showed a significant differentiation. The fruit set of O. purpurea was significantly greater compared to O. punctulata, whereas both species also had significantly higher fruit set in the grassland compared to the forest. Although the pollination success of O. purpurea was not significantly correlated with plant height, inflorescence size, or nearest neighbor distance, these factors were found to be significantly correlated to the pollination success of O. punctulata. Among these factors, the nearest neighbor distance had the highest …

In this study, the pollen morphology of all Scaligeria DC. species distributed in Turkey were studied with light and scanning electron microscopy for the first time. The aim is to contribute to knowledge of the variation among seven Scaligeria species, which have taxonomic problems, based on pollen morphological characteristics by population analysis. The pollen is radially symmetrical, isopolar, and tricolporate in all examined species. Pollen grains are prolate and subprolate with the polar axes ranging from 18.4 to 37 μm and the equatorial axes from 9.8 to 30 μm. Their polar shapes are triangular, triangular to subcircular, circular to subcircular, …
