  • Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are important plant mutualists that can facilitate plant responses to various environmental stressors, such as drought. A plant that may benefit from AMF-induced drought tolerance is Conyza canadensis due to its ability to thrive in dry conditions and its high colonization rate. However, no studies have researched C. canadensis in this context and the exact mechanisms of AMF-induced drought tolerance are still unknown.

Soil salinity threatens the yield and food security worldwide and use of halophytes might be a valid option to cope with devastating salinity effects. The present investigation was accomplished to evaluate the role of glycine betaine (GB) as presowing seed treatment on growth parameters, photosynthetic pigments, gas exchange attributes, enzymatic antioxidants, lipid peroxidation (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ), endogenous GB, total soluble proteins (TSP), and yield in quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) under saline conditions. Palynological characters of 20 taxa belonging to the Turkish subgenus Cyanus were studied in details using light and scanning electron microscopy. Pollen grains of the subgenus Cyanus were tricolporate or syncolporate, subprolate or prolate-spheroidal, 26.15 to 53 µm in polar size, 22.84 to 46.86 µm in equatorial size, isopolar, and radially symmetrical. The only type of pollen grain ornamentation observed was scabrate-perforate. Principal component analysis and cluster analysis were performed to investigate the relationships of the studied Cyanus taxa. Anthemis ekicii (Asteraceae) is described and illustrated as a new species from Tuz Lake in Aksaray Province in Central Anatolia. The new species belongs to the section Anthemis, and it is closely related to A. pauciloba var. pauciloba, from which it differs in stem, leaves, and capitulum features. Diagnostic characters, description, detailed illustrations, ecology, IUCN conservation status, and pollen and seed morphology are presented in this study.

Phylogeny And Taxonomy Of A Novel Species Of Pseudocercospora From India, Archana Singh, Paras Nath Singh, Gopal Nath, Nawal Kishore Dubey

Turkish Journal of Botany

A new species of Pseudocercospora is described causing leaf spot disease on Crotalaria assamica from India. The identity of isolate was based on asexual morphs, cultural characteristics and phylogenetic analyses of partial nuclear ribosomal 28S large subunit and complete internal transcribed spacer rDNA sequence data with high statistical support value. Morphologically this species has characters similar to allied species in genus Pseudocercospora but differs in having catenate and branched conidia. Phylogenetic analysis using LSU and ITS reveals it a new species of >i>Pseudocercospora (Capnodiales, Mycosphaerellaceae).

The new lichen species Toniniopsis bartakii is described from James Ross Island, the North-East Antarctic Peninsula region. It is phylogenetically most closely related to T. bagliettoana but differs mainly in forming a more developed, squamulose thallus. It is morphologically more similar to T. coelestina but differs mainly in the pigmentation in the proper exciple. An identification key to the known species of Toniniopsis is also provided

In this study, Lythrum salicaria plant was tested in hydroponic culture to demonstrate its zinc accumulating capacity and tolerance to different zinc levels. Lythrum salicaria seedlings were grown in 10% Hoagland solution containing 0, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 75, and 100 mg/L zinc, and 30 mg/L zinc with different pH levels (5, 6, and 7). Following this, the seedlings were harvested after 1st, 2nd, 4th and 7th days. The global emergence of low water availability causes extensive damage to crops in many regions. Although the responses of plants to drought stress have been extensively investigated, molecular studies on plants with different carboxylation pathways are limited. Therefore, we aimed to identify quantitative differences in proteins functioning in differential drought tolerance of C3 (Cleome spinosa) and C4 (C. gynandra) species. Proteomic analysis functionally characterized 33 differentially accumulated proteins in C. spinosa and 15 proteins in C. gynandra leaves. Halopeplis perfoliata, a succulent halophyte of coastal marshy habitats, was grown in a greenhouse to study its adaptive responses in terms of growth, osmoregulation, and N-metabolism following one-month exposure to salinity (0, 150, 300, and 600 mmol L-1 NaCl). Biomass was optimal in 150 mmol L-1 NaCl with unaltered malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. On the other hand, biomass remained comparable to non-saline control with some increase in MDA in 300 and 600 mmol L-1 NaCl. The species belonging to the Lamiaceae family have been useful tools for many years as a folk remedy. In the present study, a microemulsion system was developed with extract of Scutellaria salviifolia Benth (endemic), Sideritis libanotica Labill. subsp. linearis (Bentham) Bornm (endemic), and Ziziphora clinopodioides Lam. Both and related microemulsion formulations were also investigated for their potential biological activities. Pseudo-ternary phase diagrams of formulations were constructed consisting of oil/ mixed surfactant/water emulsion system and a quaternary component. Liquidambar orientalis Mill. (Altingiaceae) is known in Turkish as 'sığla' or ,'günlük' due to its gum-like exudate. Its exudate, `balsam of Liquidambar? (BL), is of great commercial importance because it has pharmaceutical properties and is rich in essential oils and phenolics. During the past decades, extensive parts of the Quercus brantii woodlands in the Zagros Mountains declined in size and habitat quality. We aimed to explore the variation of oak woodlands in the southern Zagros Mountains and to assess the vulnerability. The following questions were addressed in the study: Which edaphic and physiographic parameters are most important in differentiating woodland vegetation? High Genetic Diversity Within And Low Differentiation Among Juniperus Excelsa M. Bieb.Populations: Molecular Markers Reveal Their Genetic Structure Patterns, Özay Hasan Evren, Nuray Kaya

J. excelsa M. Bieb forms about 82% of the total juniper forests in Turkey. A total of 456 plant samples belonging to 19 J. excelsa populations were collected to determine the genetic variation of J. excelsa and compare their genetic diversity among populations via simple-sequence repeat (SSR) and intron targeted amplified polymorphism (ITAP) markers. Seven SSR and 132 ITAP loci were polymorphic. The percentage of polymorphism for ITAP loci at the population level ranged from 31.34 to 55.97. With at least a hundred independent origins among land plants, the CAM and C4 photosynthetic pathways represent one of the most notable examples of global convergent evolution of a complex trait. While biochemically similar, CAM and C4 are generally understood to be two distinct ecological adaptations evolving along separate trajectories. However, the purslanes (Portulaca), a globally widespread clade of around 100 species of annual and perennial succulents, are able to operate both CAM and C4 cycles in the same leaf. Large datasets of greenhouse gas and energy surface-atmosphere fluxes measured with the eddy-covariance technique (e.g., FLUXNET2015, AmeriFlux BASE) are widely used to benchmark models and remote-sensing products. This study addresses one of the major challenges facing model-data integration: To what spatial extent do flux measurements taken at individual eddy-covariance sites reflect model- or satellite-based grid cells? We evaluate flux footprints—the temporally dynamic source areas that contribute to measured fluxes—and the representativeness of these footprints for target areas (e.g., within 250–3000 m radii around flux towers) that are often used in flux-data synthesis and modeling studies. In 2008, we published the first set of guidelines for standardizing research in autophagy. Since then, this topic has received increasing attention, and many scientists have entered the field. Our knowledge base and relevant new technologies have also been expanding. Thus, it is important to formulate on a regular basis updated guidelines for monitoring autophagy in different organisms. Despite numerous reviews, there continues to be confusion regarding acceptable methods to evaluate autophagy, especially in multicellular eukaryotes. The tribe Nigelleae Schröd. (Ranunculaceae) worldwide distribution has been studied taxonomically, based on morphological, palynological and seed morphological characters, as well as chromosome counts. Extensive field works have been carried out in Turkey, Greece, Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Portugal and in Northern Cyprus. Moreover, the specimens of major herbaria in Turkey, Ukraine, Russia, Syria and Iran as well in Europe have been examined. This study represents the most comprehensive monograph of the tribe based on field work across its nearly entire distributional range, complemented by examination of over 980 specimens from 25 herbaria and our collections with nomenclatural contributions. Genetic Diversity Analysis Reveals Weak Population Structure In Invasive Trianthema Portulacastrum L. At Fayoum Depression, Egypt, Faten Ellmouni, Dirk Albach, Mai Sayed Fouad, Marwa Fakhr

Trianthema portulacastrum L. (Aizoaceae) is a common weed associated with cultivated crops. It is an exotic weed that originated in South Africa and is spreading all over the world. Thirty-five accessions were collected from six populations at Fayoum depression (FD), Egypt. Molecular analyses of start codon targeted (SCoT) markers were performed to identify genotypic variation among collected populations. The effectiveness of employing SCoT markers was demonstrated by the high percentage of polymorphisms. These markers revealed high genetic diversity, as well as high levels of genetic differentiation (GST), elevated gene flow (Nm) (0.195 and 2.052, respectively), high variation among a population …
