Market Prospects For Rapeseed : 1972-73, R J. Guyton Jan 1973

Market Prospects For Rapeseed : 1972-73, R J. Guyton

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Interest in rapeseed as an alternative crop in the agricultural region of Western Australia was reflected in the area sown in 1971, some 70,000 acres, and an initial export contract of 10,000 tons made in January 1972.

This market report draws upon information released by the Department of Primary Industry and Department of Trade and Industry (both located in Canberra) and research within the Department of Agriculture. Its purpose is to outline future prospects for rapeseed as an aid to decision making for the 1972 season.

1973 Time Of Planting And Rate Of Seeding On Lupin Yield, G Walton Jan 1973

1973 Time Of Planting And Rate Of Seeding On Lupin Yield, G Walton

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Comments on results - Of the four time of planting trials two definitely showed superiority of earlier seeding (73BA5, 73E6). The two trials in the Southwest (73BR14 and 73MT7) gave highest yields with June sowing compared to May. Three trials (73BR14, 73E6 and 73BA5) appear to have a Variety x Time interaction for plant density, but no definite trend for either Uniharvest or Unicrop although later sowing reduced plant density. Seeding rates in excess of 82 kg/ha gave the highest yields in all trials. The rate of seeding experiments (73BA5 and 73MT7) show that the best crop density for yield …

Observation On Natural Outcropping In The Tomato (Lycopersicon Esculentum L.) In Northwest Arkansas, Alvin F. Reeves

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A single tomato plant homozygous for the recessive anthocyaninless mutant, ae, was grown in the middle of an experimental tomato plot at the University of Arkansas Agronomy Experimental Station Farm in Fayetteville. Progeny tests of seeds harvested from this plant indicated that only 0.7% of the seeds were the result of outcrossing to other plants

A Study Of Energy And Water Transfer In Irrigated And Nonirrigated Sorghum, Loyd Raymond Stone Jan 1973

A Study Of Energy And Water Transfer In Irrigated And Nonirrigated Sorghum, Loyd Raymond Stone

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Approximately 70% of all precipitation is lost through percolation out of the root zone or by evapotranspiration (evaporation from the soil plus transpiration from plants). Estimation of these water loss processes has generally been on a small scale due to the cost and time required for their measurement. Development of remote thermal scanners has provided a possible means of estimating water loss from surfaces by using the surface temperature. This study was designed (a) to determine water movement patterns in the soil profile and (b) to evaluate the feasibility of using canopy temperatures in estimating evapotranspiration rates from cropped areas. …

Growth, Development, And Plant Temperature Characteristics Of Oats Under Water Stress, Bikkar S. Sandhu Jan 1973

Growth, Development, And Plant Temperature Characteristics Of Oats Under Water Stress, Bikkar S. Sandhu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Little information is available on sensitivity of oats to water deficits. Therefore, this study was designed (a) to investigate physiological response of oats to water stress, (b) to determine quantitative effect of water deficits on growth and yield components of oats, and (c) to evaluate plant temperature of oats as a water stress index. Spring oats (Avena sativa L.) grown under field conditions were subjected to 10-11 day stress at boot stage, at anthesis through early grain formation stage and at both stages in combination. Diurnal and seasonal patterns of relative leaf water content, leaf diffusion resistance, and net photosynthesis …

Extractable Nutrients And Ph Values From Nine Soil Associations Of Arkansas, A. W. Tennille

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Soil samples from the 0-10-cm and 10-20-cm depths were obtained from nine of the 11 soli associations of Arkansas. Sites sampled had a heavy forest cover and showed no evidence of cultivation. Routine soil tests showed that pH values ranged from a low of 4.38 for the Loessial Hills to 5.83 in the Ozark Highlands. Potassium ranged from 69 to 206 kg/ha. Phosphorus was very low in nearly all sites; the extremes were 9 and 83 kg/ha, but most values were less than 30 kg/ha. Calcium ranged from 122 to 1,523 kg/ha. The data indicate that when woodland areas are …

Farm Operations Management, H E. Fels, A. W. Hogstrom Jan 1973

Farm Operations Management, H E. Fels, A. W. Hogstrom

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The main defence of Australian farmers against the cost-price squeeze has been to increase productivity. The tendency is to run more and more stock per man and to grow more crop per man.

Some farmers run unusually large numbers of animal units per man-year.

The operations of 16 such farmers over one year were examined to find out whether it had been profitable for them to reduce labour inputs to such an extent.

Summary Of 1972 Seasonal Results "Decide" Superphosphate Rates On Pastures, J. W. Bowden Jan 1973

Summary Of 1972 Seasonal Results "Decide" Superphosphate Rates On Pastures, J. W. Bowden

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

A total of 53 pasture trials were topdressed. Of these, 37 trials were quantitatively assessed at different times during the growing season. Of the 15 wheat trials sown, only four trials gave useful results because of multiple drilling techniques used on most trials. Until the trial results have undergone comprehensive statistical analysis, no conclusions can be drawn. about the levels of response or "optimum" rates of superphosphate application at individual sites. However, because of the very short growing season in 1972 responses were generally poor. It appears that nil superphosphate application would have been optimum for animal production in the …

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Comments on Results - New Land sites (Graphs 1, 2) - The three sites were very responsive with the point of inflexion about 600 kg/ha super rate (similar to 1972 result). The seed x super rate interaction shows the quicker response to super with higher seeding rates. Low Super Bank (800 kg/ha) (GRAPH 3) - The two sites showed very little response to super applied. On the Eradu sandplain no response to super for either Unicrop or Wheat. On the Watheroo yellow sandplain (73M015) the two lupin cultivers and the wheat gave different responses. High Super Bank (>1 OOOkg/ha) …

The Art And Science Of Plant Breeding, John Sylvester Gladstones Jan 1973

The Art And Science Of Plant Breeding, John Sylvester Gladstones

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Whether he has known it or not, man has influenced the evolution of plants throughout his whole existence. In the pre-agricultural state he collected fruits and seeds from plants chosen for their useful or desirable qualities, and dispersed them wherever he went. With the neolithic revolution and the development of agriculture, some of these plants were taken into cultivation.

Consciously or unconsciously he selected types with higher yield, which germinated readily when planted, and whose seeds stayed in the head at maturity rather than being shed as in the wild grasses and legumes. Over thousands of years this "guided evolution" …

This study was undertaken to determine the nature of root and crown rot of wheat and to ascertain the proper time to plant winter wheat so as to conserve moisture, minimize root and crown rot and thereby maximize yield. Studies conducted for 15 years at several locations in western Nebraska reveal that planting date is a significant factor for higher yields, particularly in certain years.

Comparison Of Ammonium Nitrate And Urea As Nitrogen Source For Topdressing Established Grass Sods, Grant Thomas, Harold F. Miller Apr 1972

Comparison Of Ammonium Nitrate And Urea As Nitrogen Source For Topdressing Established Grass Sods, Grant Thomas, Harold F. Miller

Agronomy Notes

When urea is broadcast and not worked into the soil there is a risk of some of the nitrogen being lost to the atmosphere as ammonia. In an effort to measure the effectiveness of urea compared to ammonium nitrate as sources of nitrogen for topdressing on established grass sod, an experiment comparing these two sources at rates to supply 0, 50, 100 and 150 pounds of nitrogen per acre was conducted in 1971.
