Movement Of Soil Nitrate Through A Pembroke Soil As Affected By Tillage Method And Time Of Nitrogen Application, Noel T. Johnston Jan 1977

Movement Of Soil Nitrate Through A Pembroke Soil As Affected By Tillage Method And Time Of Nitrogen Application, Noel T. Johnston

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Of all the plant nutrients, nitrogen has been subjected to the most extensive study. The amount of inorganic nitrogen in the soil is small while the quantity needed annually by crops is comparatively large. Of the macronutrients usually applied in commercial fertilizers, nitrogen seems to have the quickest and most pronounced effect on plant growth.

In applying the nitrogen fertilizer for crop use, one must be concerned with placement, form, and availability, and with keeping the fertilizer where it is placed throughout the critical part of the growing season. The nitrogen supply molded by non-leguminous plants is of extreme importance …

Lupin Trials, J Moore Jan 1977

Lupin Trials, J Moore

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Trials in lupins this year concentrated on testing herbicide for post emergence use in lupins. Of the 20 herbicides tested 12 did not cause significant decreases in crop density and/or yield. However, weed control was often poor and the herbicide phytotoxicity tended to vary between sites. (Chapman, Badgingarra and Avondale). The Chapman and Avondale trials were not harvested because of drought. Trials in 1978 should determine if any of the herbicides tested can safely be recommended. Lupins - summary. Post emergence lupin herbicides (Badgingarra Research Station) - 77BA36. Post emergence herbicides for lupins (Chapman Research Station) - 77C18. Post emergence …

A New Approach To Grain Insect Control, G D. Rimes, M. T. Sexton Jan 1977

A New Approach To Grain Insect Control, G D. Rimes, M. T. Sexton

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Western Australian farmers now have a legal responsibility to control stored grain insects on their farms.

Ten species of insects, usually referred to collectively as 'weevils', have been 'declared' under the Agriculture and Related Resources Act.

In Western Australia, grain storage insects are not found in standing cereal crops. Thus, it should be possible to set up a clean delivery "pipeline" from the paddock to the C.B.H. bin.

W.A. Alert For Aphid On Lucerne, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia Jan 1977

W.A. Alert For Aphid On Lucerne, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The spotted alfalfa aphid which is devastating lucerne crops in the Eastern States, could be introduced to Western Australia on lucerne hay which is fed en route to imported livestock. The Department of Agriculture has therefore alerted all inspection points about the possible danger.

The Department of Agricultureis maintaining traps specifically for the aphid, and has found no evidence of it yet.

Growth Response Of Kenhy Fescue To Nitrogen Fertilizer, Kenneth L. Wells, Robert C. Buckner, George Armstrong, Paul Gray, C. E. Wyatt Jan 1977

Growth Response Of Kenhy Fescue To Nitrogen Fertilizer, Kenneth L. Wells, Robert C. Buckner, George Armstrong, Paul Gray, C. E. Wyatt

Agronomy Notes

Kenhy fescue is a new, improved variety of tall fescue which has recently been released by the University of Kentucky Agricultural Experiment Station and the U.S.D.A. Agricultural Research Service (see University of Kentucky publication AGR-60, "Kenhy A New Tall Fescue Variety"). Seed of this variety should become available to farmers in limited quantities in the summer 1977. The purpose of this report is to provide information on how this newly developed fescue variety produces as affected by time and rate of nitrogen application.

Cereal Foliage Disease Survey, T N. Khan, A. G. P. Brown Jan 1977

Cereal Foliage Disease Survey, T N. Khan, A. G. P. Brown

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Cereal Foliage Disease Survey A dry season reduced disease to insignificant levels (as measured by this survey) in all areas except the south west. Late rains may have produced some damage to wheat by S. nodorum however but this was probably confined to southern areas. In barley net blotch which has been declining re appeared a major disease in 1977 excepting high rainfall areas, where scald continued to be severe. The level of scald infection was considerably lower which may be associated with relatively higher temperatures and low rainfall. Variety Clipper continued to show high degree of tolerance to net …

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Minimum tillage trials 1977. Locations: Wongan Hills R.S., Avondale, Merredin, Mt. Barker, Esperance. Sites: At each station two sites were used, the first was under crop in 1976 and the trial will be repeated each year on the same area. The second site was under pasture in 1976 and was due to be cropped in 1977 as part of the normal district practice. The trials will be planted on a similar pasture site in 1978. Results. Apart from crop yields, weed counts (before spraying) and crop plant numbers were taken. Other measurements were made by various research officers and reported …

Locality: Avondale, Wongan Hills and Chapman Research Stations. Background. Since 1974 pegged areas on the three research stations have been under continuous pasture and have been sampled annually to study the fate of the viable doublegee seed population. Phosphorus Fertilisers For W.A. Farming, Michael D A Bolland

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Phosphorus is one of the major nutrients essential to plants. Eithout the use of phosphorus fertilisers, few soils in Western Australian sagricultural areas would be agriculturaly productive.

Superphosphate has been the major source of phosphorus fertiliser used in W. A..

Now there is a possibility that the alternatives to superphosphate may be cheaper

Bulletin No 4023 - Pasture Plants Of The Western Australian Shrublands, D G. Wilcox, J G. Morrissey

Bulletins 4000 -

The use of the shrubland pastures of Western Australia began in 1861 when Mr. W. Burges of the Bowes Station near Northampton sent a flock of sheep along the Greenough River to graze the country where Yuin station is today. Following his example, a number of other enterprising men established grazing areas along the river courses of this harsh and often drought stricken and forbidding land. By 1925, virtually all of the pastoral land of value in the mulga zone west of the Gibson Desert and the Great Victoria Desert had been developed, and by 1934, over four million sheep …

There were some modifications to the treatments which were as follows: (a) Most of the cultivars were 'new' and (b) Three levels of Septoria attack were set up:- 1. Low: cover sprayed throughout the season with the fungicide Difolatan. 2. Moderate: inoculated with Septoria three times, followed at heading out by cover spraying with Difolatan. 3. Severe: inoculated four times no fungicide. The 125 entries were sown as hill plots with the three Septoria environments as main …
