The Effect Of Soil Acidity On Barley, P J. Dolling, T. D. Haines Jan 1987

The Effect Of Soil Acidity On Barley, P J. Dolling, T. D. Haines

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Three liming experiments were established to confirm previous estimates of the critical soil acidity level for barley. Two experiments studying the effect of depth of incorporation on the effectiveness of lime, established in 1986, were continued in 1987.
The results from the three liming experiments established this year supported the conclusion that barley is affected by soil acidity at pH's around 4.2 and 4.3 (CaC12) and that depth of this acid layer is important.
Significant lime responses were obtained at the Katanning depth of lime incorporation site but conclusions can not be made because of possible mixing of …

Trial 87WH51

Location: Wongan Hills Research Station.

This trial was put onto a site adjacent to Mel Mason's source of nitrogen trial and the CSIRO, 15 N plots to provide some explanation of the results from the limited treatments in those trials. They were designed to monitor soil/fertiliser nitrogen transformations with time. Unfortunately the site of this trial was variable. The end most similar to the other trials was deeper and sandier and stored less water than the other and where crop growth was far better.

Evaluation Of Repellent Seed Treatments And Effects On Early Corn Performance, Ann E. Koehler, Ron J. Johnson, Orvin C. Burnside, Stephen R. Lowry Jan 1987

Evaluation Of Repellent Seed Treatments And Effects On Early Corn Performance, Ann E. Koehler, Ron J. Johnson, Orvin C. Burnside, Stephen R. Lowry

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

A combination of field, field enclosure, and germination chamber studies was used to evaluate the effects of methiocarb [3,5-dimethyl-4-(methylthio)phenol methylcarbamate] and thiram (tetramethylthiuram disulfide) repellent seed treatments on early corn performance. The thiram treatments used (0.08, 0.4,0.8,0.5,1.25, and 2.5% active ingredient by corn seed weight) had negligible effects on germination/emergence time or on com plant heights. The thiram treatments never reduced stand counts in comparison to controls, but apparently increased stand counts in some trials, particularly under wet conditions. The methiocarb treatments evaluated (0.5, 1.25, 2.5, and 5.0% active ingredient by corn seed weight) had only occasional effects on early …

A Guide To The Identification And Control Of Insect Pests In Maize Crops Grown Int He Ord River Irrigation Area, S.E. Learmonth

Grain and other field crops published reports

The importance of insect pests in Ord maize crops is seasonal both in terms of their abundance and the species present. It is therefore desirable that the main pests of maize can be recognized quickly and appropriate action taken to avoid crop loss

In this guide, all of the common insect pests likely to be encountered in Ord maize crops are described. Photographs of only the more important of these and some of their natural enemies are included. Any insect that cannot be readily identified may be taken to the office of the Department of Agriculture.

A section on insect …

Harvesting Methods In South Coastal, High Rainfall Crops, Richard Snowball Dec 1986

Harvesting Methods In South Coastal, High Rainfall Crops, Richard Snowball

Division of Plant Research : Technical Report Series

Results of trials carried out in south-western Australia over the past three years have shown that swathing or windrowing cereal and legume crops can result in significant advantages to growers.Swathing barley, wheat and oat crops at Mt. Barker resulted in large yield advantages over direct harvesting of standing crops. This was a result of overcoming shedding losses in the standing crop caused by strong wind and rain. Grain quality of barley and oats was not significantly affected by swathing, however, the quality of swathed wheat was sometimes worse than direct harvested grain if the harvest was delayed.Swathing cereals at Newdegate …
