Lincoln South Rotary Program, February 2010 [Lincoln, Nebraska, Usa]: Global Food Security--Intsormil, Elvis A. Heinrichs

INTSORMIL Impacts and Bulletins

Short Heinrichs spoke to the Lincoln South Rotary Club in February 2010 about global food security. What is food security? The availability of food and access to it. Many countries have food available but the population has no access to it. Heinrichs gave the group some sobering statistics regarding hunger in the world. Nine hundred forty-seven million people in the world are undernourished. One hundred forty-six billion kids under age 5 are underweight. One in seven people are hungry, and one in six people do not have safe drinking water. Ten million kids die each year from hunger related causes. …

Genetically Modified Canola Trials In 2009, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia

Research Reports

During 2009, just over 860 hectares of Roundup Ready® canola were grown in Western Australia enabled by an exemption order under the Genetically Modified Crops Free Areas Act 2003. The aim of the trials was to establish whether GM canola could be segregated from non-GM canola along the WA supply chain, and whether GM canola was agronomically viable for WA farming systems. This was the first time genetically modified canola had been grown on a commercial scale in WA - earlier exemptions for smaller trials had been for variety testing and scientific purposes.

Coupling Of Carbon Dioxide And Water Vapor Exchanges Of Irrigated And Rainfed Maize–Soybean Cropping Systems And Water Productivity, Andrew E. Suyker, Shashi B. Verma

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Continuous measurements of CO2 and water vapor exchanges made in three cropping systems (irrigated continuous maize, irrigated maize–soybean rotation, and rainfed maize–soybean rotation) in eastern Nebraska, USA during 6 years are discussed. Close coupling between seasonal distributions of gross primary production (GPP) and evapotranspiration (ET) were observed in each growing season. Mean growing season totals of GPP in irrigated maize and soybean were 1738 ± 114 and 996 ± 69 g C m−2, respectively (±standard deviation). Corresponding mean values of growing season ET totals were 545 ± 27 and 454 ± 23 mm, respectively. Irrigation affected GPP …

Growing Season Definition And Use In Wetland Delineation, Karen Malone, Hans Williams Jan 2010

Growing Season Definition And Use In Wetland Delineation, Karen Malone, Hans Williams

eBooks

The definition of growing season in the 1987 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineation Manual is derived from the soil biological-zero temperature concept. Lacking direct information on soil temperatures, minimum air temperature thresholds are used as indicators of the beginning and ending dates for the growing season. The 1987 Manual regional supplements allow for field observations of above-ground plant growth to estimate the growing season period. Since acceptance of the 1987 Manual, the growing season concept has been controversial. Soil biological zero does not apply to large areas of the continental United States, minimum air temperature thresholds appear inconsistent …

Sorghum: An Ancient, Healthy And Nutritious Old World Cereal, United Sorghum Checkoff Program, John Lindsay

INTSORMIL Scientific Publications

Sorghum is Africa’s contribution to the small number of elite grains that supply about 85% of the world’s food energy. Only four other foods rice, wheat, maize, and potatoes are consumed in greater amounts by the human race. Sorghum is the dietary staple of more than 500 million people in more than 30 countries of the semi arid tropics, thus being one of the most familiar foods in the world (Board on Science and Technology for International Development, 1996). Sorghum is a truly ancient grain. Dahlberg and Wasylikowa (1996) reported on sorghum remains found in the Nabta Playa archaeological site …

Near-isogenic lines (NILs) are valuable genetic resources for many crop species, including soybean (Glycine max). The development of new molecular platforms promises to accelerate the mapping of genetic introgressions in these materials. Here, we compare some existing and emerging methodologies for genetic introgression mapping: single-feature polymorphism analysis, Illumina GoldenGate single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping, and de novo SNP discovery via RNA-Seq analysis of next-generation sequence data. We used these methods to map the introgressed regions in an iron-inefficient soybean NIL and found that the three mapping approaches are complementary when utilized in combination. The comparative RNA-Seq approach offers …

Transgenic Maize Lines With Cell-Type Specific Expression Of Fluorescent Proteins In Plastids, Amir Sattarzadeh, Jonathan Fuller, Salvador Moguel, Katia Wostrikoff, Shirley Sato, Sarah Covshoff, Tom Clemente, Maureen Hanson, David Stern

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Plastid number and morphology vary dramatically between cell types and at different developmental stages. Furthermore, in C4 plants such as maize, chloroplast ultrastructure and biochemical functions are specialized in mesophyll and bundle sheath cells, which differentiate acropetally from the proplastid form in the leaf base. To develop visible markers for maize plastids, we have created a series of stable transgenics expressing fluorescent proteins fused to either the maize ubiquitin promoter, the mesophyll-specific phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PepC) promoter, or the bundle sheath-specific Rubisco small subunit 1 (RbcS) promoter. Multiple independent events were examined and revealed that maize codon-optimized versions of YFP and …

‘Food For Life’: Looking Beyond The Horizon, Charles A. Francis, John W. Doran Jan 2010

‘Food For Life’: Looking Beyond The Horizon, Charles A. Francis, John W. Doran

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Our real challenge appears to be anticipating what the major challenges and constraints will be to food production and distribution a decade or more into the future. This could be called ‘Beyond the Horizon’ thinking. Today there is little disagreement over the massive depletion on a global scale of two essential inputs to agriculture: fossil fuels and fresh water. We also recognize that phosphorus is found in concentrated form in only a few deposits in nature, and that agriculture is rapidly using this limited resource and dispersing it through harvested products and soil loss from fields in forms that make …

Structural And Functional Divergence Of A 1-Mb Duplicated Region In The Soybean (Glycine Max) Genome And Comparison To An Orthologous Region From Phaseolus Vulgaris, Jer-Young Lin, Robert M. Stupar, Christian Hans, D. L. Hyten, Scott A. Jackson Jan 2010

Jackson

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Soybean (Glycine max) has undergone at least two rounds of polyploidization, resulting in a paleopolyploid genome that is a mosaic of homoeologous regions. To determine the structural and functional impact of these duplications, we sequenced two ~1-Mb homoeologous regions of soybean, Gm8 and Gm15, derived from the most recent ~13 million year duplication event and the orthologous region from common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), Pv5. We observed inversions leading to major structural variation and a bias between the two chromosome segments as Gm15 experienced more gene movement (gene retention rate of 81% in Gm15 versus 91% in …

Genetic Diversity Of Wheat Cultivars From Turkey And U. S. Great Plains, Anyamanee Auvuchanon Jan 2010

Genetic Diversity Of Wheat Cultivars From Turkey And U. S. Great Plains, Anyamanee Auvuchanon

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Genetic diversity of wheat cultivars from Turkey and the Great Plains was studied under the hypothesis ‘Turkey’ wheat originated from Turkey and is the original hard red winter wheat landrace in the Great Plains. Wheat cultivars in Turkey and the Great Plains were selected for adaptation in two countries which were similar in climate. Twenty-two Turkish and twenty-three Great Plains wheat cultivars were selected for this study using SSR markers, agronomic, and end-use quality traits data. Wheat cultivars were clustered into five groups based on SSR markers and the clustering largely followed their countries of origin and pedigree. Modern Great …
