Role Of Ampa And Glur5 Kainate Receptors In The Development And Expression Of Amygdala Kindling In The Mouse, Michael A. Rogawski, Philip S. Kurzman, Shun-Ichi Yamaguchi, He Li
Michael A. Rogawski
The role of AMPA and GluR5-containing kainate receptors in the development and expression of amygdala kindling was examined using the selective 2,3-benzodiazepine AMPA receptor antagonist GYKI 52466 [(1-(4-aminophenyl)-4-methyl-7,8-methylenedioxy-5H-2, 3-benzodiazepine] and the decahydroisoquinoline mixed AMPA receptor and GluR5 kainate receptor antagonist LY293558 {(3S,4aR,6R, 8aR)-6-[2-(1(2)H-tetrazole-5-yl)ethyl]decahydroisoquinoline- 3-carboxy lic acid)}. Administration of GYKI 52466 (5-40 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) and LY293558 (10-40 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) prior to daily kindling stimulation in mice produced a dose-dependent suppression of the rate of development of behavioral kindled seizure activity and reduced the duration of the stimulation-induced electrographic afterdischarge. In drug-free stimulation sessions after the initial drug-treatment sessions, there was an …

Review of "Neurosteroids: A New Regulatory Function in the Nervous System" (edited by Etiene-Emile Baulieu, Paul Robel and Michael Schumacher), Humana Press, 1999. ISBN 0896 03545X The first recognized example of the profound influence of steroid hormones on the nervous system was perhaps the observation in prehistoric times that animal behaviour changes dramatically during oestrus (the period of female sexual receptivity). In recent years, much specific evidence has accumulated confirming that steroids affect the structure and function of the nervous system through effects on neurogenesis, cell death, cell migration, synapse formation and neuronal excitability.

Genes That Guide Growth Cones Along The C. Elegans Ventral Nerve Cord, Bruce Wightman, Renee Baran, Gian Garriga
Renee Baran
During nervous system development, growth cone pioneering and fasciculation contribute to nerve bundle structure. Pioneer growth cones initially navigate along neuroglia to establish an axon scaffold that guides later extending growth cones. In C. elegans, the growth cone of the PVPR neuron pioneers the left ventral nerve cord bundle, providing a path for the embryonic extensions of the PVQL and AVKR growth cones. Later during larval development, the HSNL growth cone follows cues in the left ventral nerve cord bundle provided by the PVPR and PVQL axons. Here we show that mutations in the genes enu-1, fax-1, unc-3, unc-30, unc-42 …

Trigeminal Repellents Do Not Promote Conditioned Odor Avoidance In European Starlings, Larry Clark
Trigeminal Repellents Do Not Promote Conditioned Odor Avoidance In European Starlings, Larry Clark
Larry Clark
Birds, and in particular European Starlings (Stumus vulgaris), avoid con sumption of fluid and food treated with the natural plant products, methyl anthranilate and o-aminoacetophenone. Avoidance is an unlearnedresponse most likely mediated via chem ically sensitive fibers of the trigeminal nerve. The trigeminal nerve codes for chemical irritation and pain. Starlings are not repelled by the odor of the compounds, nor is olfaction important in the avoidance response. Moreover, starlings fail to learn to avoid the odor of the repellents, even after direct oral contact with liquid repellent. While trigeminal irritants can be powerful repellents, the absence of associative learning …

Action Of Heptaminol Hydrochloride On Contractile Properties In Frog Isolated Twitch Muscle Fibre, Bruno Allard, Vincent Jacquemont, Fouad Lemtiri-Chlieh, Bernard Pourrias, Oger Rougier
Action Of Heptaminol Hydrochloride On Contractile Properties In Frog Isolated Twitch Muscle Fibre, Bruno Allard, Vincent Jacquemont, Fouad Lemtiri-Chlieh, Bernard Pourrias, Oger Rougier
fouad Lemtiri-Chlieh
1 Heptaminol stopped or delayed the progressive decline in tension which characterizes the phenomenon of fatigue in frog isolated twitch muscle fibre. 2 Heptaminol had no action on the sodium, potassium and calcium voltage-dependent ionic conductances. 3 The hypothesis of an action via an internal alkalinization was tested by comparison with the action of NH4Cl. Both substances increased the tension. 4 The action of hepataminol was suppressed in sodium-free (TRIS) solution or in the presence of amiloride while the action of NH4Cl was always observed. 5 These results could be explained by a stimulation of the Na/H antiport by heptaminol.

Neuromuscular Junction Development In The Cutaneous Pectoris Muscle Of Rana Catesbeiana, Diana Linden, Susan Jerian, Michael Letinsky
Neuromuscular Junction Development In The Cutaneous Pectoris Muscle Of Rana Catesbeiana, Diana Linden, Susan Jerian, Michael Letinsky
Diana Linden
Synaptic specializations were studied in the developing cutaneous pectoris muscle of Rana catesbeiana tadpoles and froglets to correlate nerve terminal morphology (by light and electron microscopy), accumulation of acetylcholine receptors, and the ability of the muscle to contract following nerve stimulation. This correlated approach was used to determine the developmental timing and possible causal relationship of events in nerve and muscle maturation at the neuromuscular junction. Initially, the cutaneous pectoris nerve trunk was present in the undifferentiated presumptive cutaneous pectoris mesenchyme, prior to muscle maturation. At stage XII when the muscle was first able to contract weakly in response to …
Correlated Muscle And Nerve Development In The Bullfrog Cutaneous Pectoris, Diana Linden, Michael Letinsky
Correlated Muscle And Nerve Development In The Bullfrog Cutaneous Pectoris, Diana Linden, Michael Letinsky
Diana Linden
The development of the cutaneous pectoris muscle was studied and compared with the differentiation of its peripheral nerve in bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana) tadpoles and frogs by light and electron microscopic techniques. This muscle preparation was chosen for this study because it possesses a number of advantages for (and has become a model system for) the study of correlated nerve-muscle development. At the earliest stage examined (stage XI) the presumptive muscle did not contain any contractile or morphologically distinguishable myotubes, but was contacted by the well-defined cutaneous pectoris nerve trunk. Myotubes were present at stage XII, the same time that nerve-associated …
