System Analysis And Nematode Phylogeny, Armand R. Maggenti
System Analysis And Nematode Phylogeny, Armand R. Maggenti
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications
The purpose here is to suggest a method which will permit understanding of the phylogenetic relationships of contemporary representatives of the phylum Nematoda without fossils. It is not my intent to again offer a phylogeny for the Nematoda. To say that no real benefit or knowledge of phylogeny or evolution is possible without fossils is succumbing to apathy. One cannot deny or ignore that all systems, morphological, biological and chemical manifested in modern forms developed by evolutionary sequence. It is true that with a complete fossil record the rates of evolution and developmental pressures could be accurately evaluated. However, in …

The Incidence And Intensity Of Haematozoa In The Common Crow (Corvus Brachyrhynchos) Of Western Washington, Ronald E. Scarvie
All Master's Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence and intensity of blood parasites in the common crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos). The following observations on the protozoan genera Haemoproteus, Leucocytozoon, Plasmodium and Trypanosoma with observations on the nematode group microfilaria, are based entirely on materials collected at Auburn, Washington during the spring of 1970.
Despite the numerous studies on prevalence of blood parasites in various birds, there have been few attempts to study the relative incidence and intensity of haematozoa in blood and tissue smears taken from the common crow. So far as the author has been able to ascertain, …

Conclusions
1. Under experimental conditions wild boars are sensitive to toxoplasmosis to a significant degree. In all 6 of the infected animals the disease ended lethally. The characteristic clinical symptom was involvement of the eyes.
2. Spontaneous Toxoplasma antibodies were observed in 36 (34.3%) of 105 boars studied with CFRs.
3. Toxoplasma was found microscopically in smears of kidney, spleen, and brain from 3 boars; the bioprobe method revealed it in the lymph nodes of 10 animals; in these cases the strain isolated was avirulent.

The Effect Of Gamma Irradiation On Growth Of Seven Strains Of Trypanosoma Avium, Roy Wesley Leid Jr.
The Effect Of Gamma Irradiation On Growth Of Seven Strains Of Trypanosoma Avium, Roy Wesley Leid Jr.
All Master's Theses
The prime motivating factor in the present study was the desire to show significant differences in radio-sensitivities within six strains of Trypanosoma avium. A seventh strain was later added for the last two irradiation treatments. Gross morphology and differences in growth curves associated with varying temperatures suggested that the strains being cultured were not the same. With these differences in mind, the strains were subjected to different dosage levels of gamma irradiation.

A New Genus Of Trematode (Digenea: Gorgoderidae) From The Ureter Of Tuna Fish (Thunnus Thynnus Maccoyii) In Australia, Harold W. Manter
Harold W. Manter Laboratory: Library Materials
A large, digenetic trematode is described from the ureter of the tuna Thunnus thynnus moccoyii from southern Australian waters. It represents a new genus and species, Cetiotrema crassum (subfamily Gorgoderinae) distinguished by the size and shape of the body, the caeca being distant from the sides of the body, the uterus being intercaecal, the vitellaria arising as three claviform lobes on each side and the seminal vesicle at least partly anterior to the genital pore.
The genus is close to Phyllodistomum Braun; P. carangi Manter, 1947, is considered to belong to Cetiotrema; P. lancea Mamaev, 1968 is very similar …

Parasitic Organisms In The Blood Of Arvicoline Rodents In Alaska, Francis H. Fay, Robert L. Rausch
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications
A Grahamella-like organism (Schizomycetes: Bartonellaceae) was found in erythrocytes of laboratory-reared northern voles, Microtus oeconomus Pallas, which had been inoculated intraperitoneally with a saline suspension of ground fleas, Megabothris abantis (Roths.), from wild northern voles captured at Lower Ugashik Lake, Alaska Peninsula. A live-trapped northern vole from the same locality harbored trypanosomes referable to T. microti (Mastigasida: Trypanosomatidae). Two morphologically similar but biologically different strains of piroplasms (Piroplasmasida: Theileriidae) of uncertain generic status were isolated from northern voles of Ugashik Lake origin and from northern red-backed voles, Clethrionomys rutilus Pallas, from the vicinity of Anchorage, Alaska. Summary
Phlyctainophora squali sp. nov. is described from 23 female specimens recovered from the subcutaneous tissue of one of 440 Squalis acanthias caught off Los Angeles, California. This finding represents a new host and distribution for this genus. Phlyctainophora is placed in the family Philometridae on the basis of atrophication of vulva and anus, simple mouth, viviparity and location in tissue of fishes. The family diagnosis for Philometridae is amended to include Phlyctainophora which lacks an anterior ovary.

Practical Disease Prevention In The Pig Herd, R B. Richards
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
DISEASES cause loss in pig production through mortality, poor growth rate and reduced food conversion efficiency.
The cost of drugs and expert advice causes further economic loss, and the dangers to public health and to other livestock in a community are serious and often-neglected considerations.

Cestodes of the genus Davainea Blanchard 1891, from grouse in various Eurasian and North American regions have been identified as D. tetraoensis Fuhrmann 1919, or less frequently as D. proglottina (Davaine 1860). Those from ptarmigan (Lagopus spp.) in Alaska, resembling D. tetraoensis in some details but having only a single row of rostellar hooks and fewer testes, were earlier reported as D. proglottina by Babero (1953). The study of additional material from grouse from Alaska indicates that this cestode is specifically distinct from the two species mentioned. It is described here as new.

Sheep Worm Control And Lambing Time In High Rainfall Areas, F C. Wilkinson
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Indications from a continuing sheep trial at Margaret River are that farmers in high rainfall areas could increase stocking rates and lamb growth rates by lambing in September- October rather than July-August.
The results also indicate that farmers in the area may be spending more than necessary on worm control.

The gonads of Deontostoma californicum were isolated from the organismal environment by dissection. In an attempt to approximate the in vivo condition and to maintain in vitro architecture and function ten media recommended for the culture of insect cells or organs were tested. The media were prepared in two series: one according to published recommendations and the second substituting filtered seawater for the inorganic salts and distilled water. Media were prepared as both liquid and gel (agar) with and without antibiotics. Whole animals and eggs were placed on the same culture media series as the ovarial explants. Ovarial explant reaction …
Zoonotic Diseases In The Changing Arctic, Robert L. Rausch
Zoonotic Diseases In The Changing Arctic, Robert L. Rausch
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty and Staff Publications
Compatible with the biotic uniformity of northern regions, the occurrence of certain organisms which cause zoonotic diseases is general throughout the Arctic. In the past, most frequently affected by such diseases have been aboriginal peoples whose way of life involved encroachment upon naturally occurring parasite-host assemblages. Now, as changes take place in socioeconomic conditions in the Arctic, the importance of zoonotic diseases as a cause of morbidity may lessen among such peoples, but on the other hand, more nonaborigines may be affected. Although my remarks relate mainly to Alaska, again the biotic uniformity of the North seems to have its …

Some Aspects Of Carbohydrate Metabolism In The Cercariae Of Schistosoma Mansoni Sambon, 1907, A. Eugene Dunham Jr.
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Cercariac of Schistosoma mansoni were studied for glycogen utilization, uptake of glucose from solution, lactic acid production, and respiration.
Using the anthrone method of determination of carbohydrate, the amount of glycogen used by a single cercaria in 4 hours is determined as 43.2 x 10-4 μg ± 6.6 x 10-4 μg.
