Boron (B) deficiency is widespread in the northeastern Anatolian region of Turkey. This could impact the production and quality of grapevine (Vitis vinifera L. cv. Karaerik). A field experiment was conducted for determining the optimum economic B rate (OEBR), critical soil test, and tissue B values for yield and quality response of grapevine to B fertilizer application method (foliar and soil) at 5 doses (0, 1, 3, 9, and 12 kg B/ha) for 2 years. The goal of the performed experiments was to determine the strength, stiffness, and modulus of the elasticity of dowel, mortise and loose-tenon, and mortise and tenon L-type furniture joints under diagonal tension and compression loads. The specimens were constructed from Turkish beech (Fagus orientalis L.), white oak (Quercus alba), and white walnut (Juglans cinerea L.) and were assembled with a water-resistant PVAC adhesive. According to the obtained results, the highest stiffness/strength values were estimated in mortise and tenon joints constructed of white oak, whereas dowel joints constructed from Turkish beech showed the lowest stiffness/strength and deformability. W. Murcott scion, budded onto two rootstocks, was evaluated under high pH conditions supplied with different Fe levels. Plant dry weight, leaf area, iron chlorosis symptom scale, leaf chlorophyll concentration, net photosynthetic rate, and ferric-chelate reductase (FCR) activity variables were investigated under high pH conditions. Control plants (T1) produced the most leaf area, whereas plants grown without Fe (T2) produced the least. Dry weight was highest in 'Volkameriana' T1 (control) plants and lowest in 'Swingle citrumelo' T3 (10 μM Fe and 7.8 pH) and T2 (0 μM Fe and 7.8 pH) treatments. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) biosynthesized reduced glutathione (GSH), which maintains redox homeostasis in plants under normal and stressful conditions. To justify the effects of NAC on rice production, we measured yield parameters, chlorophyll (Chl) content, minimum Chl fluorescence (Fo), maximum Chl fluorescence (Fm), quantum yield (Fv/Fm), net photosynthesis rate (Pn), photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), and relative water content (RWC). Elaeagnus angustifolia L. is a deciduous wild-growing fruit species that plays significant roles in maintaining ecosystem functions in arid regions. In the present study, the fruit characteristics and genetic variations among 56 E. angustifolia accessions collected from the Central Anatolian region of Turkey were determined. The majority of the variations were observed in fruit characteristics. Results revealed that fruit weights varied between 0.59 g and 2.56 g, fruit lengths between 1.13 cm and 2.58 cm, fruit widths between 0.86 cm and 1.67 cm, fruit shape indexes between 0.52 and 0.92, and pedicle lengths between 1.95 mm and 7.74 mm. Papaya germplasm showed wide morphological diversity in terms of fruit yield, weight, length, cavity, fruiting zone, flesh thickness, flesh color, and total soluble solids content. RAPD and ISSR markers also showed polymorphisms at rates of of 84.32% and 84.67%, respectively. Jaccard's genetic similarity values of RAPD and ISSR were found in the range of 0.30-0.99 (average: 0.65) and 0.26-0.95 (average: 0.61), respectively, suggesting a moderate level of genetic diversity within the papaya group. Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for flowering time (FT) in lentil were located using a recombinant inbreed line population derived from an intraspecific cross of Precoz × WA8649041. Experiments for FT were conducted in 2 locations (Haymana, Turkey and Pullman, WA, USA) for 5 years (from 1998 to 2002 in both Pullman and Haymana). A linkage map was constructed using 149 markers (RAPD, AFLP, ISSR, SSR, and 2 morphological markers) located on 11 linkage groups (LGs). Agarwood is the precious fragrant wood produced by the tropical tree Aquilaria, often after elicitation by wounding or fungal attack. In this study we established a cell suspension culture of A. malaccensis from leaf-derived callus and induced agarwood production in the culture using fungal elicitors. Elicitors were made from crude mycelial extracts of two fungal species from the genera Trichoderma and Lasidiplodia. Salinity is the major threat to global wheat production, particularly in arid and semiarid areas. Breeding salt-tolerant cultivars is one feasible solution, while the presence of genetic variation is a prerequisite for genetic improvement. To detect genetic variation for salt tolerance in wheat, a total of 150 wheat genotypes were tested for seedling-stage tolerance response at 300 mM NaCl in hydroponic culture. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the stem and bulb nematode Ditylenchus dipsaci Kühn (Tylenchida: Anguinidae) on yield parameters of some onion varieties in Karaman Province, Turkey. Experiments were established in a naturally infested onion field during two consecutive years (2012-2013). Nematode population development was followed at the beginning and end of the experiment. Presence of arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) at elevated levels in the soils is threatening agricultural productivity. Arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM) enhance plant resistance to metal(loid)s by sequestering them into roots, thus restricting their translocation into leaves. The present study evaluated differential responses of AM-colonized Cajanus cajan and Pisum sativum plants to As and Cd uptake and oxidative metabolism under As and Cd stress (0, 30, and 60 mg kg-1). Arsenic uptake was significantly higher than Cd uptake, which caused greater growth inhibitions and induced oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of roasting and enzyme pretreatments on the yield and quality of cold-pressed oils obtained from 3 poppy seed varieties (Ofis 3 (blue), Ofis 4 (yellow), Ofis 8 (white)). The oil recovery range was 21.89%-38.36% with cold pressing. The oily cakes (meal) contained 42-168 g/kg oil and 113-166.3 g/kg moisture after the cold pressing. Physicochemical and quality tests were conducted to evaluate and compare the efficacy of the pretreatments. Furthermore, fatty acid, sterol, and tocopherol compositions were determined. Various application methods for the entomopathogenic nematode Heterorhabditis bacteriophora were evaluated under laboratory and field conditions. Four different methods of applying the infective juveniles (IJs) of the nematode to soil were assessed including (1) insect cadavers (referred to as nematode-infected cadavers), (2) subsurface injection, (3) spraying, and (4) drip irrigation. In the laboratory experiment, except for the control with no nematodes, all treatments showed more than 95% insect mortality of the bait insect (Galleria mellonella) with no significant differences among treatments. The genetic diversity of watermelon [Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nakai] in China, the world's largest producer of watermelon fruits, has not been examined. Two molecular markers, sequence-related amplified polymorphism (SRAP) and simple sequence repeat (SSR), were used to investigate the genetic variation and genetic relationship among 54 Chinese watermelon accessions, as well as 7 accessions from Africa, the United States, and Japan. Seven almond varieties, Ferragnes, Nemaguard, AB3 (Amygdalus orientalis Mill.), GN22, GF677, Myrobalan(Prunus cerasifera),and Pissardi nigra, and F1 crossbreed almonds, Ferragnes × Pissardi nigra, Ferragnes × Myrobalan, Ferragnes × GN22, Nemaguard × GF677, Myrobalan × AB3 (Prunus dulcis Mill.), Myrobalan × Ferragnes, Pissardi nigra × AB3, and GF677 × Myrobalan, were used to determine resistance against root-knot nematode (RKN) (Meloidogyne spp.) using DNA markers. The aim of this study was to investigate whether spectral reflectance indices could be used to estimate different destructive morphophysiological traits of a wide and diverse range of spring wheat germplasm in a rapid and nondestructive manner. A total of 90 spring wheat germoplasms were evaluated under water shortage by applying only three irrigations during the growing cycle of germplasm with the amount of water totaling 2550 m3 ha-1. Among the more intriguing topics in general ecology courses are the symbiotic relationships (the ‘-isms’ as I sometimes present them – mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism). The goal of this research is to identify the types and impacts of recreational activities on formal and informal trails in the Roslyn Urban Forest (RUF), Roslyn, Washington. The RUF has over 8 km (5 miles) of trails that are used by recreationalists (Begley 2008). However, high-impact activities have compacted soils, eroded slopes, and affected animal migration corridors. The City of Roslyn's main management goals are to protect and enhance wildlife habitat and to provide a quality non-motorized recreational experience. Landsat imagery has been used successfully to assess burn severity and monitor post-fire forest structure in a variety of ecosystems, but to date there are few documented studies on its application in the eastern deciduous forests of the eastern United States. The occurrence of a wildfire in the Daniel Boone National Forest in2010 provided a rare opportunity for research into the use of Landsat data for assessing burn severity and its ecological effects. We used differenced normalized burn ratio (∆NBR) to quantify burn severity. The ∆NBR based burn severity classification had 70% agreement with a qualitative ground-based burn severity assessment. …

T: Quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) forests are experiencing numerous impediments across North America. In the West, recent drought, fire suppression, insects, diseases, climate trends, inappropriate management, and ungulate herbivory are impacting these high biodiversity forests. Additionally, ecological tension zones are sometimes created at residential-wildland interfaces with divergent management directives. For example, private conservation reserves bordering public land may be degraded from browsing where game species find refuge from hunting and plentiful forage. The persistence of quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) is of significant importance to land managers in the Rocky Mountain region. Fire suppression in the past century has been implicated as a mechanism influencing aspen population dynamics, as aspen are generally considered an early seral disturbance adapted species. The heterogeneity of aspen community assemblages and fire regimes makes it difficult to discern what the result of fire suppression has been at large spatial and temporal scales. An extensive search was conducted of archival and other sources to locate as many historical photographs as possible for the Henry Mountains in south-central Utah. Those images were then taken into the field, the original camera stations relocated, and modern pictures made of the historical scenes to evaluate long-term vegetation change and land management activities. In all, 626 repeat photo sets were compiled—608 by the author and 18 by Earl Hindley. This book includes 126 photo sets that were representative of the areas studied.

The southwestern region of the Yukon Territory of Canada has experienced an unprecedented spruce bark beetle outbreak (Dendroctonus rufipennis) and an increase in the frequency of forest fires that extend beyond historical trends and that have caused significant impacts on forest structure and composition. A Strategic Forest Management Plan (SFMP) for the Champagne and Aishihik Traditional Territory located in the southwest Yukon was implemented in 2004 in response to the spruce bark beetle (D. rufipennis) infestation and increased fire risk. The plan has recommended salvage harvesting of beetle-killed stands as a strategy to facilitate the development …
