Fermentation Of Glucose And Fructose By Leuconostoc Mesenteroides, Hüseyi̇n Erten

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The preferred order of glucose and fructose uptake by Leuconostoc mesenteroides was investigated in Glucose Fructose Yeast Extract Amino Acid medium with and without the addition of salt under anaerobic conditions. Strains NCIMB 8023 and NCFB 811 preferentially utilised glucose over fructose. A higher biomass was obtained when employing strain NCIMB 8023 compared with strain NCFB 811. The strains studied produced lactate and ethanol as major end-products, with lactate synthesis being greater than ethanol. Small amounts of acetate and mannitol were also formed.

The concept of forest management planning has rapidly progressed towards a more holistic approach in the last decade. Considering the whole landscape of ecosystems is the focus of landscape management. This paper examines the evolutionary process of forest management and compares and contrasts the landscape management planning concept to its predecessor, the conventional forest resource management approach. It explains the conceptual framework, provides the principles and the improvements over the conventional management planning, and discusses different approaches towards the landscape management concept. The objective of this study was to determine the volumetric swelling and shrinkage characteristics of air-dried Corsican pine in the longitudinal, tangential and radial directions. For this purpose, the swelling of the wood was caused by the wood being increased in water whilst placed in a swelling jig, and the shrinkage made in an oven by drying. The experimental results showed that although the differences in swelling or shrinking occur in the first 5 hours, both swelling and shrinkage are then negligible in the three directions. Embryogenic mass was produced from kernels of mature fruits of Pistacia atlantica cultured in liquid Murashige and Skoog media, supplemented with 100 mg/l casein hydrolysate, 100 mg/l l-ascorbic acid, and benzylaminopurine (BAP). Embryogenic mass-es were differentiated directly from the kernel explants after culture for 3 weeks in liquid medium with 0.5-4 mg/l benzylaminop-urine. After transfer of the embryogenic masses into the same medium, but after a few subcultures with benzylaminopurine, somat-ic embryos appeared. Clusters of somatic embryos were transferred to the agar solidified MS medium for maturation. The effects of compaction on urease enzyme activity, carbon dioxide evaluation and nitrogen mineralisation of urea-treated and untreated soils were investigated. In this study, the effects of storage periods on some quality features of various dimensioned potatoes types were examined (2.5-5.0 cm, 5.0-6.5 cm and greater than 6.5 cm). The effects of storage duration on all properties except for the dry matter content were statistically significant. It was observed that with the extension of storage period, weight gain of the tubers decreased, and the other properties were not stable. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of vesicular-arbuscular (VA) mycorrhizae on plant growth of cucumber. Yayla F 1 seeds were sown in sterile and non-sterile growing medium (organic manure:soil:mix of sand; v:v:v 1:1:1). The mix inoculum of Glomus mosseaand Glomus fasciculatumspores (10 g/plant) was placed 5 cm below the cucumber seed before sowing. The study was carried out in the greenhouse of the Department of Field Crops, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ankara, in 1994. The experiment was conducted in split-plots design in randomised plots with four replications. Cuttings were treated with various concentrations of IBA; IAA and NAA at different periods to induce rooting. The best rootings, 28 % and 29 %, were achieved by treatment of the cuttings with 500 ppm IAA in April and 250 ppm IBA in May for 12h.

Under salinity stress, growth and variations in proline, Na, Cl, P and K concentrations of three chickpea varieties (Canitez- 87, ILC-195/2 and Damla), which are cultivated widely in Turkey, were investigated. For this purpose, experimental soil was salinized with 68 mmol kg ^{-1}NaCl. The salinity responses of chickpea varieties were compared by means of various plant parameters. According to the results, Damla was affected by salinity stress much more than Canitez-87 and ILC-195/2 cultivars. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of different humic acid and phosphorus levels on corn plant ( Zea mays L.) growth and P availability in a calcareous soil. This investigation was conducted to determine the pollen germination rates and the pollen production capacities of some strawberry cultivars grown in Van ecological conditions. The experiments were carried out at the Department of Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Yüzüncü Yıl in 1997-1998. The examinations of pollen germinations were done in vitro by the 'agar in plate' method (0, 10, 15, and 20 % sucrose solutions with 1 % agar). InIn this study, isosteric sorption heat for 8 different starchy grains was determined by the application of the Clausius- Clapeyron equation to sorption isotherms. The latent heat of vaporisation of free water was not significantly different from the isosteric sorption heats of barley, durum wheat, oats, sorghum (31) and sorghum above 14% d.b. moisture content. There was no significant difference among the latent heat of vaporisation of free water and isosteric sorption heats of soft wheat, hard wheat and wheat (Waldron) above the 17% moisture content. This study was carried out to determine the green manure values of the most suitable forage legumes for growing as winter catch crops under irrigated conditions of Çarsamba Plain. The highest (maize and sunflower) grain yield grown as a summer main crop after green manuring were obtained from green manuring of whole plants of narbonne vetch and common vetch (in maize, 974.2 kg/da and 963.3 kg/da; in sunflower, 493.8 kg/da and 492.5 kg/da). The effects of wood species, thickness and cross-section factors on wood moisture content under centrally heated indoor conditions in Trabzon. Factors of thickness, cross-section and wood species were found to affect daily wood moisture content variation, but these factors did not appear to affect the average monthly wood moisture content. Strong relationship were found between average monthly wood moisture and wood equilibrium moisture contents (r 2 =0.9972), and wood moisture content, temperature and relative humidity (r 2 = 0.9926). The import demand pattern for dairy products in Turkey is influenced by changes in the world's dairy products market and government livestock programs and policies. For the transfer of a \beta -Glucuronidase (GUS) reporter gene to sugarbeet (Beta vulgaris L.) callus and leaf explants by microprojectile bombardment, various rupture disk pressures and sample plate distances were tested. By coating the pBI221.23 DNA construct over the gold particles, bombardments were carried out by the DuPont PDS-1000/He system and the results clearly indicated the superiority of leaf explants over the callus structures as targets. A greenhouse experiment involving four levels of boron (0, 5, 10 and 20 mg B kg -1) and the levels of zinc (0, 10 and 20 mg Zn kg -1) was conducted in tomato plants ( Lycopersicon esculentum L., cv., 'Lale'). Boron toxicity symptoms occurred at 10 to 20 mg kg -1 B levels. These symptoms were somewhat lower in the plants grown with applied Zn. Fresh and dry weights of the plants clearly decreased with applied B. However Zn treatments partially depressed the inhibitory effect of B on the growth. Little is known about the response of sweet sorghum to water stress. Therefore, the aim of this study was to characterize sweet sorghum physiological water use efficiency (WUE) under progressing water stress conditions, with emphasis on the canopy scale as compared with the leaf scale. We studied the effects of forest fragmentation on southern flying squirrels (Glaucomys volans) in southern Illinois, and examined factors influencing nest box use. Ten nest boxes were placed in each of 30 oak-hickory forest fragments. Nest boxes were checked monthly after installation. We measured habitat variables that described the nest box tree, the microhabitat surrounding the nest box tree, and landscape level characteristics of the fragments (isolation and area). Overall, 78% of the 300 nest boxes were used. Glaucomys volans was captured in 24 of the 30 forest fragments, and evidence of squirrel use was found in 4 additional fragments. …

The most beneficial and appropriate method for sludge resulting from food industry waste water treatment is composting with various kinds of bulking agents. During composting, the organic material in the sludge is degraded to a humus-like material that makes an excellent soil conditioner. In this investigation, sludge from yeast manifactured in the Pakmaya-D.zce Plant was composted with peat moss and corn stalk chips and used as plant growing media in containers. This study was carried out to determine the effect of inflorescence length on callus induction and plant regeneration in yellow bluestem ( Bothriochloa ischaemum(L) Keng). Inflorescences with different lengths (2-25 mm) from the in vitro regenerated plants of a Bothriochloa - ecotype with a good response to in vitro culture were cultured on LS-medium with addition 8 mg/l dicamba. The results of the study showed that the rates of callus induction related to inflorescence length varied from 20.3% to 46.9%.
