We examined reproduction by relocated and resident northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus) on an intensively managed 563-ha study area in Trinity County, eastern Texas. During the late winters of 1990-1992, 155 South Texas (84 hens, 71 cocks) and 136 East Texas (64 hens, 72 cocks) bobwhites were captured, radio-tagged, and relocated to the study area; 139 resident birds (73 hens, 66 cocks) were also captured, radio-tagged, and released at the point of capture. Adjusting Discount Rates For Income Taxes And Inflation: A Three-Step Proces, Steven H. Bullard, John E. Gunter

Income taxes and inflation must be correctly accounted for in forest valuation and investment analysis. In a specific analysis, the discount rate and all costs and revenues should be either before or after taxes, and they should include or exclude inflation consistently. We summarize eight formulas for adjusting discount rates for income taxes and inflation in a simple three-step process. A one-page figure is presented that can be used as a stand-alone tool for correctly adjusting discount rates. South. J. Appl. For. 24(4):193-195.

Direct And Indirect Parametrization Of A Localized Model For The Mountain Pine Beetle — Lodgepole Pine System, Zy Biesinger, James Powell, Barbara Bentz, Jesse Logan

The dynamic interaction between mountain pine beetles (MPB) and one of its hosts is reviewed briefly. The ‘local’ projection of a partial differential equation model describing this interaction is employed in model parameter estimation. Methods and assumptions for estimating non-fitted parameter values are given. Assigning values to non-fitted parameters, direct and indirect parametrization techniques are employed to estimate remaining parameter values. The indirect method is quickly and easily applied to many data sets but requires some assumptions and model simplifications. The direct method requires fewer assumptions but is computationally intensive. The results of these two techniques are compared and evaluated.

Heterotic Effects Regarding Salt Tolerance In Some Characters Of Barley (Hordeum Vulgare L.), Riza Yilmaz, Cahi̇t Konak

The salt tolerance of some barley genotypes and their cross populations were evaluated at seedling stage in a greenhouse, and at the generative stage in a saline field in line x tester analysis. Promising crosses were determined through comparison of heterotic effects. Tokak-157/37 x LIGNEE-640, Quantum x MENTA "S" and Kaya-7794 x MENTA "S" were found to be superior cross combinations with respect to salt tolerance in both greenhouse and field conditions. In this study, land consolidation projects were evaluated by a different way than usual. According to the results of two different models applied to the Tokat-Erbaa-Yukarı Çandır Village land consolidation area, first of all the previous owners of parcels were identified. Then using these values, in Model A 22.18% of the total area and in Model B 18.31% of the total area were given to the previous owners. For both models, statistical calculations were made between the previous parcel(s) in a block and the parcel(s) given in the same block for all holdings. Anatolian chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) is one of Turkey's indigenous species including monumental forests and trees which are representative of the natural history; and, Isparta, is an area of Turkey with chestnut stands. There are two natural chestnut stands in Ayazmana and the Yenice and Dere districts within Isparta city. The stand located in the Yenice and Dere districts was investigated in the present study. The effects of spiral grain on some mechanical properties of Calabrian pine wood were studied. For this purpose, 17 sample trees were taken from Çakirlar region, Antalya district. The experimental trees were classifed into five groups according to the values of spiral grain angles as follows: 0- 5 % , 5-10 % , 10-15 %, 15-20 %, and > 20 %. No difference was found in bending strength and modulus of elasticity, up to 10 and 15 % spiral grain degrees, respectively. A spiral grain of 20 % or higher can be permitted in compression stresses. The aim of this experimental study was to determine the effect on soil porosity and compaction of the number of the tractor passes on the soil surface. The soil has a sandy loam texture. A tractor passed once, twice, and four times while the water content of soil was near field capacity. Numbers of tractings increased soil bulk density and compaction, and decreased total porosity, void ratio, air porosity and drainage porosity. One and two tractor passes did not markedly affect the percentage of porosity kept at field capacity porosity, but four tractor passes improved it.

This study was carried out in a cage house of the commercial egg company in the Konya Province. The cage house capacity was 36762 layers. Eight exhaust fans with a capacity of 40000 m 3 /h were installed on the end walls in the house. Twenty-four cellulose evaporative cooling pads, each one 1.20 m high x 1.80 m long x 100 mm thick were mounted on the side walls. Agronomic and quality characteristics of 16 Virginia type groundnut cvs. and, direct and indirect effects of these characters on yield formation as an alternate crop were investigated in Hatay district in 1995 and 1996. The genotypes differed significantly in respect to all investigated characters, and it was concluded that the peanut could be an important alternate crop for Hatay district based on the results of pod yield, which ranged between 211.9 and 311.3 kg/da. Correlation and path coefficient analysis also revealed that the number of pods per plant, pod yield per plant and kernel/pod ratio correlated significantly with pod yield …

Herbicide-Induced Resistance To Fusarium Wilt In Cotton And Gossypol Production Of Host Cells, Yeter Canihoş, Şener Kurt, Hülya Özgönen

Pretreating cotton seeds with some herbicidies used in cotton-growing areas of the Çukurova region markedly increased cotton resistance to Fusarium wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vasinfectum. Haloxyfob and linuron reduced the mycelial growth of the pathogen in both solid and liquid cultures. However, prometryn was more effective in plant development than linuron and haloxyfob. Synthesis of Phytoalexin gossypol was significantly produced in inoculated cotton plants compared with uninoculated control plants. Maximum amounts of gossypol production were obtained in herbicide-treated and inoculated cotton plants. Gossypol extracted from herbicide-treated plants markedly reduced the mycelial growth of the pathogen in vitro.

This study was conducted to determine the best combination of azolla ( Azolla anabaena) and N fertilizer under Menemen ecological conditions in 1996 and 1997. The A. mexicana genotype of azolla was brought from the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and adapted to the Aegean region of Turkey. The results of study showed that the combination azolla+N fertilizer yielded approximately 356 kg/da of rice under Menemen second crop conditions. It was also concluded that the use of azolla will lead to a 1/3 reduction in the N demand of a rice crop.

Performed in 1995 and 1996, the aim of this research was the selection of hazelnut types grown in Terme, Çarşamba, Salıpazarı and Ayvacık districts of Samsun province. In total, 104 types were investigated. The types which resulted in 800 or more Total Weight-Ranked Points were considered. 19 types in 1995 and 22 types in 1996, five of which were preselected in 1995, were evaluated. The results were exposed to the "Weight-Ranked Method". According to the evaluation results the types 55-Ç-5, 55-T-15, 55-Ç-4, 55-A-3 and 55-Ç-7 were selected in 1995. Effect Of The Skin Contact On The Aroma Composition Of The Must Of The White Emir Grape Variety, Ahmet Canbaş, Turgut Cabaroğlu

The effect of the skin-contact on the composition of free and glycosidically bound aroma components of the must of Vitis vinifera cv. Emir was investigated. Aroma components were analysed by GC-MS. Seventeen free (3 six-carbon alcohols, 2 terpenols, 2 alcohols, 5 acids, 3 phenols, 2 C-13 norisoprenoids) and 30 bound aroma components (3 six-carbon alcohols, 4 terpenols, 5 alcohols, 5 acids, 9 phenols, 4 C-13 norisoprenoids) were identified. The skin-contact treatment increased amounts of free and glycosidically bound aroma components, potassium, total phenolic compounds and the browning index and the pH value, whereas it decreased the amount of total acidity.

In this study, genotype x environment interactions and stability of seed yield and some components of the dry bean were determined. The trials were conducted in the provinces of Çarsamba, Bafra and Samsun for two years and in Ladik for one year. The effects of farmyard manure, tea waste, Portland cement, frisol, initial temporary transparent film cover, and fuel oil on soil stabilization were compared with the control soil on a tilled and loosened clay loam Fluvent soil in Ankara. The amount of irrigation water applied was based on free surface evaporation from a screened Class-A Pan. This study was carried out during 1995-1996 in Çukurova. In the experiment, Priana and Belliana were used as comparative cultivars. In addition, 12.5, 25, 50 ppm of NAA and 500, 1000, 2000, 4000 ppm of carbaryl and 50 % of hand thinning were applied about three weeks after full bloom. The results showed that 50 ppm NAA increased both the thinning rate and the fruit size while 1000 and 2000 ppm of carbaryl had a positive effect on the fruit size and weight without having any effect on thinning. This research was carried out under Bursa conditions in 1995 and 1997. In this study, the effects of plant population and nitrogen doses on the fresh ear yield and some yield components in the hybrid variety Merit were investigated. Row spacing was constant and distances within rows of 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 cm were used. Five nitrogen doses (0, 100, 200, 300 and 400 kg N/ha) were also applied. This study was conducted to determine nut growth and development in Sebin, Bilecik, 32B-18 and 170 B-16 walnut cultivars in 1997-1998. In the study, nut length, nut diameter, nut weight with hull, kernel weight, protein content of shell, kernel and hull, oil content of shell, ash content of shell, ash content of kernel and ash content of hull were determined in the period of fruit growth. Forestry operations take place under various variables and partly uncontrolled factors. The lack of mechanization level and its application cause quantity and quality losses during production. In this study, seven different production methods were used for felling, logging and barking to determine the best of production method for the Kale region. Genotype x environment interaction is a challenging issue to plant breeders in improving high-yielding, stable genotypes for variable environments. Several methods of measuring stability of genotypes tested across a range of environments have been proposed. The grain yields of fifteen bread wheat ( Triticum aestivumL.) genotypes grown at eight different locations were used to assess adaptation and stability characteristics of the genotypes and to study associations among these parameters. In this study, Amasya Beyazi and Alphonse Lavallee grape cultivars were grafted on 5 BB (V. berlandieri x V. riparia) rootstock by chip-budding, cleft and omega cut manual grafting units under nursery conditions in 1996 and 1997. Grafts were made on the 15 th of May. One-year-old rooted rootstocks were used in the experiment. The highest graft take was obtained from chip-budding, 87.00% for Amasya Beyazi, and 82.50% for Alphonse Lavallee. The interactive effects of vernalization, photoperiod and light intensity on the length of the apex or spike and main shoot, and the diameter of the main shoot of five different wheat ( Triticum aestivumL.) cultivars (Çukurova-86, Atay-85, Lancer, Haymana-79 and Bezostaya-1) having different biological characters were investigated.
