Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

In this study, the effects of spiral grain on some physical properties of the Calabrian pine (Pinus brutia Ten.) wood were investigated. For this purpose, 17 sample trees with various spiral grain angles, were taken from the Çakirlar region, Antalya district. The selected trees were divided into five groups according to grain angles. Tests were carried out for oven dry density, density values in volume, shrinkage, fiber saturated point (FSP) and maximal moisture content. The results led to a number of conclusions; In general, density increased in relation to the spiral grain increase. Density (oven dry weight/green volume) increased after …

This research was carried out to determine the effects of different pruning methods and height of fruit setting in greenhouse melon production for two years. The first year, the Makdimon F1 variety was used, the second year Galia H5 F1 and Deltex F1 varieties were also tested. The first year the plants were pruned as (a) young plants were stopped after the second leaf and the strongest branch was left as the main stem (top shoot pruning) and (b) control (non-pruned). In both treatments the heights of fruit setting were 30 and 60 cm. In the second year, two stems …

Characterization Of Some Regosols In The Bursa Plain, Cumhur Aydinalp

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

In the Bursa plain, Regosols are extensively cultivated soils for horticultural crops and irrigated by water from aquifers. These soils are quite widespread on the west side of the plain and developed on different types of parent materials. This research was carried out to determinate genesis and classification of the Regosols developed on calcareous colluvium material. Five soil profiles were examined in this research and their characterization included field morphology and physico-chemical analysis. The soils were classified according to the systems of FAO/Unesco (1990), FitzPatrick (1988), and USDA Soil Taxonomy (1994). The soils show high sand and calcium carbonate contents …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

In this study, activation experiments of germination were done in three species seeds which are naturally distributed in Turkey. Because" The stratification method" needs a long time, a new and faster germination method was sought. The results of the three species are below. Ostrya carpinifolia Scop naturally exists in the Black Sea region, Central Anatolia and as well as in Antalya, Adana and Antakya forests in the Carpinetumzone. This decidous species is from the Betulaceafamily, Coryleaesubfamily, Ostrya L. genus and can be 20m in height with an irregular canopy. Effects Of Diameter-Limit And Two-Age Timber Harvesting On Songbird Populations On An Industrial Forest In Central West Virginia, Cathy Ann Weakland Jan 2000

Effects Of Diameter-Limit And Two-Age Timber Harvesting On Songbird Populations On An Industrial Forest In Central West Virginia, Cathy Ann Weakland

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Many studies examining forest fragmentation effects on songbirds have been conducted in landscapes significantly altered by urbanization or agriculturalization rather than forested landscapes. There is some evidence that forest fragmentation due to timber harvesting has different effects on bird abundance than fragmentation from other land uses. It is unknown how songbirds respond to different forms of timber harvesting as fragmentation events. Also, it is unclear if microhabitat-level or landscape-level characteristics are more important predictors of breeding bird occurrence in the central Appalachians. The objectives of my study were to determine the short-term effects of diameter-limit and two-age timber harvesting on …

Method To Predict The Potential Regional Long-Term Timber Supply Using Gis And Other Publicly Available Data, Jeffery Earl, Richard A. Kluender, Robert Brewington Jan 2000

Method To Predict The Potential Regional Long-Term Timber Supply Using Gis And Other Publicly Available Data, Jeffery Earl, Richard A. Kluender, Robert Brewington

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

While the global demand for wood products is on the rise, timber production has shifted from the Pacific Northwest to the southeastern United States in recent times. The increase in harvesting makes accurate assessment of the South's wood supply essential. Anew method is proposed for looking at the potential supply of raw woody material. The test area was three southeastern Arkansas counties. A geographic information system (GIS) using ArcView software incorporates two sources of public information. First, Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) data from the USDA Forest Service were queried to find land areas and volumes by timber type, as …

Investigations On The Performance Of Some Strawberry Cultivars (Fragaria X Ananassaduch.) Grownin Open Fields And Under High Tunnel Conditions, Kubi̇lay Önal

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Five strawberry cultivars were grown as frigo seedlings planted in July by using two management systems, open grow-ing and high tunnel, in 1996 and 1997. Yield, earliness and some quality characters were observed. The high tunnel system made the crop 2-3 weeks earlier than the open field system with a longer period. Yield was also high in the high tunnel system with 1053 grams per plant while it was 877 grams in open growing. Miranda was the highest yielding cultivar in both management systems. Cultivars Camarosa and Miranda were superior for fruit weight and the rate of high quality.
