University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Systematic, distributional, and ecological data are provided for seven taxa, two described as new, of three species of the pocket gopher genus Pappogeomys in the Mexican state of Jalisco. The first Jaliscan record of Orthogeomys grandis also is reported and several instances of sympatric occurrence of pocket gophers are documented.

Various museums in recent years have published lists of type specimens housed in their collections. Such lists provide a useful point of reference for systematists and, for that reason, have been encouraged by the International Council of Museums. In 1968, that organization issued "A preliminary list of catalogues of type specimens in zoology and palaeontology," compiled by A. W. F. Banfield, and a revised list is planned for 1971. This catalogue of holotypes of mammals in the University of Kansas Museum of Natural History is particularly appropriate for the present volume, because Professor E. Raymond Hall was directly responsible for …

Summer Distribution And Food Habits Of Microtus In The Logan Canyon Area, Utah, James B. Monroe

Field work for the study was conducted in Logan Canyon and the valley at the base of that canyon in Cache County, Utah, during the three summer months of both 1968 and 1969, Microtus pennsylvanicus, found only in the valley, inhabits wet marshy areas. Microtus longicaudus is found in mixed deciduous woods a long the Logan River in the canyon. Microtus richardsoni, which occurs only at the higher elevations, inhabits the subalpine meadows. Microtus montanus inhabits mesic grassy fields in both the valley and Logan Canyon and also inhabits a mixed deciduous woods and tall canary grass ( …

The Development Of Eimeria Auburnensis In Cell Culture, Wayne Norris Clark

In vitro development of Eimeria auburnensis was studied in cell cultures. The cell types used were established cell lines of adult bovine kidney (Madin-Darby) and embryonic human intestine cells (Int 407); also cell line cultures of embryonic bovine trachea and embryonic bovine spleen cells were used. Monolayer cell cultures were serially propagated in disposable prescription bottles and transferred to Leighton tubes for use in experiments. Coverslips from Leighton tubes cultures inoculated with sporozoites were examined at regular intervals with phase-contrast microscopy for as long as 20 days after inoculation. Amprolium For Control Of Experimental Coccidiosis In Six- And Twelve-Month-Old Calves, William R. Jolley

One hundred Hereford calves were used in 2 experiments, with each experiment lasting approximately 3 months. In the first experiment, 40 yearling heifers were each inoculated with approximately 50,000 E. bovis oocysts daily for 10 days (500,000 oocysts, mixed with water, were poured over the morning dry feed allotment for each pen of 10 animals). Amprolium was given in the feed at 25 mg/kg of body weight daily for 30 days to 20 of the calves; the remaining 20 were not treated. Treatment was started one day before inoculation. The untreated calves had some diarrhea, discharged moderate numbers of oocysts …

Three examples, industrial melanism in moths, insecticide resistance in insects, and myxomatosis in Australian rabbits, are used to illustrate the concept that evolution may result from tampering with the physical or biotic environment of a species. Hence, concern about the effects of pollution must encompass not only the possibility of extinction but the possibility of evolution. In the case of harmful species, biological or chemical control measures may result in populations more refractory to control than the original untreated populations.

Rest Site Selection By Radio-Tagged Raccoons, Jay H. Schnell

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Daytime resting sites and behavior of 14 radio-tagged raccoons were studied from April 18 to November 27, 1965, with types and use of the sites, daytime activity and shifts at the sites, and approach movements previous to resting being analyzed. The radio system pinpointed 173 rest sites, 7 4 per cent in swamps, 17 per cent in hollow trees, and 9 per cent in squirrel or bird nests. Use of the rest sites did not correlate with habitat type or size of the home range or with distances which animals traveled during their active nightly period. Behavioral influences in selection …

The mastiff bat, Eumops perotis renatae, described by Pirlot in 1966 and later elevated to specific status by the same author is herein regarded as junior synonym of Eumops perotis perotis (Schinz, 1821). Earlier reports of large Eumops from South America are reviewed in light of the present understanding of the relationship between Eumops perotis and E. trurnbulli.

THE Red-browed Finch (Estrilda temporalis) has been established probably since 1958 in orchard clearings in Darling Range gullies east of Perth.

Although some concern has been shown at the introduction of a new species to Western Australia, it appears to be of little economic importance.

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Methods for rearing, harvesting, and management use of pike (Esox lucius L) in Minnesota are described, especially as related to multiple use of shallow water areas. Principal emphasis is placed on the method of removing fingerling and yearling pike in winter from shallow lakes. Such lakes often raise wild rice and also are utilized by waterfowl. The pike, spawned naturally in these lakes, are harvested by pumping aerated water through fish traps when oxygen levels in the lake become low. Pumping is most effective when oxygen levels in the lake fall below 2 parts per million but is higher in …
