Changes In Spring Migration Of The Wood Pigeon (Columba Palumbus) In Northwestern Croatia, Zdravko Dolenec, Petra Dolenec

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Several papers have shown the sensitivity of birds as monitors of climatic trends. We examined how a short-distance migrant bird, the wood pigeon, has responded to the recent climate change using data from a long-term study (1983-2007) in northwestern Croatia. The wood pigeon arrival dates have become 11.5 days earlier during the study period. This result suggests that the first arrival date of the wood pigeon is influenced by warm springs.

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Fifteen African sharptooth catfish (Clarias gariepinus Burchell, 1822) were collected from the River Asi (River Orontes) in Antakya (Hatay, Turkey) in November 2007, and fish blood samples were examined for the presence of blood parasites. The existence of infection with Trypanosoma (hemoparasite) was identified in 13 out of the 15 fish specimens. Currently there are no records of the presence of any species of Trypanosoma infecting Clarias gariepinus in Anatolia. Thus this study is the first report of Trypanosoma sp. infections in Clarias gariepinus in Turkey.

An Evaluation Of The Distribution Pattern Of The Common Chaffinch (Fringilla Coelebs) In Turkey, Utku Perktaş, Zafer Ayaş

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The common chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs) is one of the most common and widespread of the Western Palearctic songbirds and breeds primarily in natural forests in the northern, western, and southwestern parts of Turkey. We reevaluated the distribution of this species in Turkey with recent observational data. Although this species has been considered a breeder in southeastern Turkey, results of this study suggest that it probably does not breed in the region any longer. We examined the effect of climatic (temperature, precipitation, potential evapotranspiration) and topographic (altitude) variables on common chaffinch distribution in Turkey. Our findings show that the presence of …

Simple Predictors Of Bite Force In Bats: The Good, The Better, And The Better Still, Patricia W. Freeman, Cliff A. Lemen Jan 2010

Simple Predictors Of Bite Force In Bats: The Good, The Better, And The Better Still, Patricia W. Freeman, Cliff A. Lemen

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Bite forces of 39 species from six families of New World bats with a variety of diets are quantified with a force meter under field conditions. Using regression approaches we search for a model that is a good morphological predictor of these bite forces. Body mass, an index that ignores differences in skull morphology, has a statistically significant relationship with bite force (R2 = 0.76) but is a relatively poor predictor compared with our best model (R2 = 0.94). The two best models of the eight we examine are one based on an estimate of strength …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Using data for 25,780 species categorized on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List, we present an assessment of the status of the world's vertebrates. One-fifth of species are classified as Threatened, and we show that this figure is increasing: On average, 52 species of mammals, birds, and amphibians move one category closer to extinction each year. However, this overall pattern conceals the impact of conservation successes, and we show that the rate of deterioration would have been at least one-fifth again as much in the absence of these. Nonetheless, current conservation efforts remain insufficient to offset the …
