Turkish Journal of Zoology
The species composition and distribution of large intestinal ciliates was investigated in feces from 5 Cypriot domestic horses living in Northern Cyprus. We identified 9 ciliate genera and 11 species. This is the first report on intestinal ciliates in Cypriot domestic horses, and no endemic species were observed. The genera Cycloposthium, Spirodinium, and Paraisotricha occurred in all animals. The mean number of ciliates was (5.5 ± 4.4) × 10^4 cells mL^-^1 of feces and the mean number of ciliate species per host was 7.2 ± 1.5. The characteristics of the domestic horse ciliates were almost identical to those reported in …

Diet Composition Of Myotis Myotis (Chiroptera, Vespertilionidae) In Western Poland: Results Of Fecal Analyses, Agnieszka Graclik, Oskar Wasielewski
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The diet of greater mouse-eared bats (Myotis myotis) was investigated by analysis of 900 droppings taken from 8 different bat colonies in western Poland. Three taxonomic orders (Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, and Diptera) and representatives of 2 other groups of arthropods (Chilopoda: Lithobiidae and Arachnida: Araneae) were identified in the droppings. Coleoptera was the most abundant prey found in fecal samples in all seasons. Study sites differed significantly in the composition of prey, which probably reflects the local foraging conditions for M. myotis.

Morphological And Histological Effects Of Copper Sulfate On The Larval Development Of Green Toad, Bufo Viridis, Mert Gürkan, Si̇bel Hayretdağ
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Declines in populations of amphibians have been occurring more dramatically over the past 25 years. The declines have various causes. One of the possible causes of amphibian declines is pesticides. Copper sulfate is commonly used as a fungicide in vineyards and gardens in Turkey. In this study, our purpose was to explain the morphologically and histologically acute toxic effects of copper sulfate on Bufo viridis tadpoles. B. viridis tadpoles at Gosner stage 21 were exposed to different concentrations (0.01, 0.05, and 0.1 mg/L) of copper sulfate for 120 h. The LC_5_0 value of copper sulfate was calculated as 0.058 mg/L. …

The Combined Effects Of Salinity And Temperature On The Egg Hatching Rate, Incubation Time, And Survival Until Protozoal Stages Of Metapenaeus Monoceros (Fabricius) (Decapoda: Penaeidae), Mevlüt Aktaş, Nuran Çavdar
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The combined effects of 3 different temperatures (24, 28, and 32 °C) and salinity levels (35, 40, and 45 g L^{-1}) on the egg hatching rate, incubation time, larval activity, and survival rate until protozoal (PZ1) stage of Metapenaeus monoceros (Fabricius) were investigated under controlled laboratory conditions. The average fertilization rate was 97.25% following spawning. The eggs were stocked in 2-L glass larval culture flasks and received 1 of 9 salinity and temperature combinations in 3 replicates. The eggs hatched in all treatments. Temperature, salinity, and their interaction had significant influences on the hatching rate of the eggs (P < 0.05). The hatching rate decreased as salinity increased and was lowest in all temperature levels at a salinity of 45 g L^{-1}. With regard to the hatching rate, the best combinations were obtained at 35 g L^{-1} and 32 °C (91.67%) and at 35 g L^{-1} and 28 °C (89.17%). The incubation time was shorter at 32 °C (11.2 h) than at 28 °C (14 h) or 24 °C (17.2 h). The development rate from the naupliar stage to the protozoal stage was best at a salinity level of 35 g L^{-1} combined with temperatures of 28 °C and 32 °C. Larval activity was also found to be best at 28 °C and 32 °C at 35 g L^{-1} and 40 g L^{-1}, as compared to that at 24 °C in all salinity levels.

Skull Features Of The Common Vole (Microtus Arvalis Sensu Lato) From Hungary: Craniometrical Evidence For Its Taxonomic Detachment, Georgi Markov, Gabor Csorba, Maria Kocheva, Milena Gospodinova
Turkish Journal of Zoology
A revision was carried out on 245 adult skull specimens of the common vole (Microtus arvalis sensu lato) kept in the mammal collection of the Hungarian Natural History Museum in Budapest. A highly effective craniometric classification function was used to reveal whether they belonged to the common vole (M. arvalis Pallas, 1778 sensu stricto) or to the East European vole (Microtus levis Miller, 1908). It was found that M. levis specimens were present in the Hungarian mammal fauna; the boundaries of that animal's European range were thus expanded in the west. The distribution of the East European vole and the …

A total of 8 specimens of Rana tavasensis Baran & Atatür, 1986 (Tavas frog) were collected in Denizli Province (inner-west Anatolia, or the eastern part of the Aegean region), Turkey, in 2008 and 2009 and were examined for the first time for helminths. All 8 frogs were infected with 1 or more helminths. The helminth fauna of R. tavasensis comprised 3 species: 1 species of Digenea [Haplometra cylindracea (Zeder, 1800) Looss, 1899], 1 species of Nematoda [Cosmocerca ornata (Dujardin, 1845)], and 1 species of Acanthocephala [Acanthocephalus ranae (Schrank, 1788) Lühe, 1911)]. R. tavasensis represents a new host record for each …

Turkish Journal of Zoology
The Calanoid copepod Eudiaptomus gracilis (G.O. Sars, 1863) is recorded from Turkish inland waters for the first time. Males and females of Eudiaptomus gracilis were consistently found during 6 sampling periods in the Yeşilırmak River. The species was collected from the Yeşilırmak River and Suat Uğurlu and Hasan Uğurlu dam lakes in the Black Sea region and detailed descriptions of both sexes are given.

Histopathological Effects Of Montivipera Xanthina Venom On Rats, Hüseyi̇n Topyildiz, Si̇bel Hayretdağ
Turkish Journal of Zoology
In this study, the histopathological changes caused by Montivipera xanthina venom to rat skin, skeletal muscle, and liver tissue were analysed by light microscope. The venom (approximately 2.85 mg/kg) was injected intramuscularly into the gastrocnemius muscle of the rats. The animals were dissected 1, 3, and 6 h after the injection time, and tissue samples were taken. Sections 5 µm thick were taken from paraffin blocks of tissue samples, and the sections were stained with haematoxylin and eosin in order to facilitate examination by light microscope. Examinations showed no damage to the epidermis layer of skin. However, damage to the …
Structure And Chemical Analysis Of The Metathoracic Scent Glands Of Carpocoris Fuscispinus (Boheman, 1851) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) From Turkey, Di̇lek Durak, Yusuf Kalender
Structure And Chemical Analysis Of The Metathoracic Scent Glands Of Carpocoris Fuscispinus (Boheman, 1851) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) From Turkey, Di̇lek Durak, Yusuf Kalender
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Metathoracic scent glands (MTGs) of Carpocoris fuscispinus (Boheman, 1851) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) were studied in adult females and males. Structures of the glands were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, and the volatile fraction was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. MTGs of C. fuscispinus have many features in common: a large, median reservoir and paired lateral glands opening laterally at each anterior margin forming evaporation areas composed of mushroom-like structures, which are diagnostic for species-level taxonomy. In the MTGs of C. fuscispinus, 24 and 21 compounds were detected in females and males, respectively. Most of the chemical compounds are qualitatively similar in …

Growth Performance And Body Composition Of Kutum Fingerlings, Rutilus Frisii Kutum (Kamenskii 1901),In Response To Dietary Protein Levels, Ghaffar Ebrahimi, Hossein Ouraji
Turkish Journal of Zoology
A feeding trial was conducted to determine the optimal dietary crude protein requirement for Rutilus frisii kutum fingerlings. Five isoenergetic experimental diets were formulated to contain graded levels of protein (32%, 37%, 42%, 47%, and 52%). Triplicate groups of 80 kutum (average weight 0.5 g) were stocked in 250-L tanks and fed to apparent satiation 3 times a day for 8 weeks. The results indicate that the growth performance and feed utilization of kutum were significantly (P < 0.05) affected by dietary protein level. The second polynomial regression of weight gain against protein level yielded an estimated optimal dietary protein requirement of 41.6%. Weight gain, specific growth rate, and feed efficiency increased with increasing the dietary protein level from 32% to 42%, but decreased significantly (P < 0.05) with further increases in dietary protein. The protein efficiency ratio was inversely correlated with dietary protein level. Feed intake was not affected (P > 0.05) by dietary protein level. No significant difference was found in the whole-body protein, lipid, moisture, or ash contents of fish fed the …

Redescription Of Mesobuthus Vesiculatus (Pocock, 1899) (Scorpiones: Buthidae) Based On Specimens From Iran, Ayşegül Karataş, Muhammed Mouradi Gharkheloo
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The scorpion Mesobuthus vesiculatus (Pocock, 1899) was briefly described from northwestern Iran based on only one male with a picture indicating the dorsal habitus of the holotype; the author pointed out that it has a large and globular telson with a short aculeus. This species, with very distinct morphological features, is now redescribed based on new specimens (3 males, 3 females) collected from West Azerbaijan and East Azerbaijan (Iran). Detailed figures and measurements are presented and the trichobotrial pattern and paraxial organ are illustrated for the first time. The morphological differences of M. vesiculatus from similar species M. caucasicus, M. …
