Local Concentration Of Foraging Noctule Bats (Nyctalus Noctula) As A Possible Tool To Assess The Density Of Bats In Large Forest Complexes, Michal Polakowski, Monika Broniszewska, Ireneusz Ruczynski
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Concentrations of at least 600 hunting noctule bats Nyctalus noctula were observed over the artificial shallow reservoir Siemianówka in eastern Poland. The observation indicates that noctule bats concentrate hunting during the presence of vast amounts of insects over the reservoir. We suggest that the high concentrations of noctule bats provide a potential tool for the estimation of local population size or density in large forest complexes.

Breeding Success Of The Stone Curlew Burhinus Oedicnemus In Nag Valley (1999-2001), Kharan, Pakistan, Muhammad Sajid Nadeem, Tariq Mahmood, Muhammad Mahmood-Ul-Hassan
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Variations in different breeding parameters in 2 adjacent populations of the Stone Curlew in Nag Valley were studied. A total of 106 active nests were spotted, with an overall mean clutch size of 1.42 eggs per nest. The nest and egg success of the Lope Valley population was 0.50 and 0.42, respectively, while the nest and egg success of the Kereichi population was 0.60 and 0.45. Poaching of eggs/chicks, habitat shrinkage, overgrazing, and fuel wood collection are thoughts to be the main factors affecting the breeding success of Stone Curlew in the area.

Phoretic Mites In Uni- And Bivoltine Populations Of Ips Typographus: A 1-Year Case Study, Martin Cejka, Jaroslav Holusa
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Members of the order Mesostigmata frequently use other animals to colonize suitable habitats, and thus their phoretic exploitation of bark beetles is not exceptional. We compared the abundance and species spectrum of phoretic mites in univoltine and bivoltine populations of the European spruce bark beetle Ips typographus. Two localities with high population densities of Ips typographus in the eastern part of the Czech Republic (400 and 1100 m a.s.l.) were studied. Beetles were sampled with pheromone traps baited with IT Ecolure (5 per locality). In total, 1268 I. typographus individuals were captured, from which 1662 mite individuals were collected and …

Recognition Of Two New Species Of Freshwater Crabs From The Seychelles Based On Molecular Evidence (Potamoidea: Potamonautidae)., Neil Cumberlidge, Savel Regan Daniels Phd
Journal Articles
The Afrotropical freshwater crab genus Seychellum is endemic to the granitic Seychelles in the Indian Ocean (Mahé, Silhouette, Praslin, La Digue and Frégate). Here we describe two new cryptic species of Seychellum that represent two evolutionarily separate lineages of a previously monotypic genus. This raises to three the number of species of freshwater crabs known from Seychelles. Each species is endemic to either one island (Silhouette) or to a pair of islands (Mahé and Frégate, or Praslin and La Digue). The three species can be clearly distinguished as separate lineages by DNA analysis, haplotyping and examination of gonopod characters. The …

Aim Global-scale studies are required to identify broad-scale patterns in the distributions of species, to evaluate the processes that determine diversity and to determine how similar or different these patterns and processes are among different groups of freshwater species. Broad-scale patterns of spatial variation in species distribution are central to many fundamental questions in macroecology and conservation biology. We aimed to evaluate how congruent three commonly used metrics of diversity were among taxa for six groups of freshwater species.
Location Global.
Methods We compiled geographical range data on 7083 freshwater species of mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fishes, crabs and crayfish to …

Metapopulation characterization and discrimination of the pearl oyster Pinctada imbricata radiata in the northern part of the Persian Gulf is unknown. This study was conducted to examine differences in shell morphology of P. imbricata radiata from the Hendourabi and Lavan islands using principal component analysis (PCA) and elliptic Fourier analysis (EFA). Both EFA and PCA differentiated the shell form of the 2 populations significantly. PCA indicated that the pearl oysters from Hendourabi tended to be longer, while those from Lavan were wider and greater in thickness (width). Based on EFA, the specimens of Hendourabi Island were more fusiform than those …

Breeding Ecology And Behaviour Of The Great Reed Warbler, Acrocephalus Arundinaceus, In Poyrazlar Lake, Turkey, Ali̇ Uzun, Zehra Ayyildiz, Faruk Yilmaz, Belgi̇n Uzun, Mehmet Sağiroğlu
Turkish Journal of Zoology
In this study, the breeding ecology and behaviour of the Great Reed Warbler, Acrocephalus arundinaceus, was studied at Poyrazlar Lake, Turkey. The breeding period started in the first week of May. The incubation period lasted 14 days. As clutch size increased, the diameter of the nests became larger (r = 0.65). Diameters of nests containing different clutch sizes varied significantly from one another (P < 0.01). However, their height did not change (r = 0.24). There was no significant height difference between nests containing different clutch sizes (P > 0.05). As the nests became farther from the shore, the clutch size and the egg weight increased, because mature adults built their nests on the reeds in deeper areas (r = 0.59, r = 0.73). On …

Facultative Paedomorphosis In A Population Of Lissotriton Vulgaris (Amphibia: Salamandridae) From The Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve (Romania), Florina Stanescu, Elena Buhaciuc, Paul Szekely, Diana Szekely, Dan Cogalniceanu
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Facultative paedomorphosis refers to the simultaneous expression of 2 different phenotypes (i.e. paedomorphic and metamorphic) within the same population. Over the last 6 decades, this phenomenon was reported from only 5 populations of smooth newt Lissotriton vulgaris (Linnaeus, 1758) in Romania. In the spring of 2011, we found a new facultative paedomorphic population. The sample was female-biased, thus suggesting a sex-dependent expression of the paedomorphic phenotype. Most of the populations recorded in Romania were found in permanent water bodies with abundant vegetation.

Time-Activity Budgets Of Wintering Ferruginous Duck, Aythya Nyroca, At Gajoldoba Wetland, Jalpaiguri, India, Tanmay Datta
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Results indicate resting as the main diurnal activity of Aythya nyroca, whereas feeding dominated during the night. Other than resting (56.3%), feeding (16.8%) and swimming (15.2%) were major activities of the diurnal time-activity budget, whereas preening (9.4%) and flying (2.3%) were less frequent and occupied a secondary rank. Feeding and swimming were prevalent during the morning and afternoon hours. During midday, most of the ducks indulged in resting. The small amount of time spent on diurnal feeding was compensated by voracious nocturnal feeding (64.6%), which peaked in the middle of the night. Human interference plays an important role in shaping …

Rotifers Of Southwest Iran: A Faunistic And Biogeographical Study, Raheleh Reihan Reshteh, Hassan Rahimian
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The fauna of freshwater rotifers from Khuzestan Province (Southwest Iran) was expected to be different from that of the rest of Iran because of its geographical position, past geological events, climatic conditions, and similarities to neighboring zoogeographical areas. To test this hypothesis, we first had to determine the rotifer fauna of Khuzestan and then compare it with the results of surveys from other parts of Iran as well as with those from neighboring regions. This study is based on material of the family Scutelleridae collected from different localities in Turkey between 1969 and 2013. In this study, 13 species of 7 genera belonging to 4 subfamilies (Eurygasterinae, Elvisurinae, Odontoscelinae, Odontotarsinae) from the family Scutelleridae were recorded from Turkey. Among them, Eurygaster integriceps Puton, 1881; Eurygaster maura (Linnaeus, 1758); and Odontotarsus purpureolineatus (Rossi, 1790) have been found to be the most abundant and widespread species. Phimodera flori Fieber, 1863 is a new record for the Turkish fauna. In addition, new localities were found for some species that have already been reported in Turkey.
