Chd Genes: A Reliable Marker For Bird Populations And Phylogenetic Analysis?Case Study Of The Superfamily Sylvioidea (Aves: Passeriformes), Mitica Ciorpac, Radu Constantin Druica, Gogu Ghiorghita, Dumitru Cojocaru, Dragoş Lucian Gorgan
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The chromo-helicase-DNA binding protein (CHD) genes are widely used markers for sex determination in birds and provide a rapid and low-cost method with applicability to a large number of taxa. A good phylogenetic marker displays highly conserved domains and a slow evolution rate, proprieties that CHD genes seem to have. This gives rise to the following question: is the CHD gene a reliable marker for phylogenetic and bird population analysis? The aim of this study is to investigate whether the CHD gene is a reliable tool for molecular phylogeny and for population analysis within the superfamily Sylvioidea. Our results reveal …

Developmental Differences Of Local Populations Of Alfalfa Weevil (Hypera Postica) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Ehsan Sanaei, Marjan Seiedy
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Many invasive insect pests show phenotypic variation between local populations across their geographical range. Understanding and integrating such differences will help to improve pest management. Population differences are the result of local adaptation to environmental conditions and may be detected using ecological analyses. Immature stages may represent especially interesting study objects as they represent important stages in the life cycle of insects and in many cases may be the most destructive stage. The alfalfa weevil, Hypera postica (Gyllenhal, 1813), is a variable worldwide pest that heavily damages alfalfa fields and is widely distributed in Iran. The lack of information about …

Bombina variegata (L., 1758) is recorded in Turkey for the first time. With the record of the present study, the known easternmost distribution area of the species has been extended from Greece to Turkey. The specimens were collected from Kurtkaya-Enez (Edirne). The morphometric characters and color-pattern features of the specimens were compared with data given in the earlier literature. We observed that the specimens of the Kurtkaya population were similar to the B. v. scabra specimens reported in the literature.

A field study of the small mammal assemblages of an urban micropopulation in the city of Kosice (New Jewish Cemetery, 48°41'34.1"N, 21°15'17.8"E, 218 m a.s.l., Slovakia) was carried out. On 20 October 2015, during fieldwork, one unusually colored individual of the black-striped field mouse (Apodemus agrarius) was recorded. According to the findings, the observed individual (a subadult female) meets the criteria of flavism. The dorsal fur, with or without a very unimpressive black stripe, was yellow (or beige); the auricle, feet, and tail were light; and the coloration on the belly was white. This finding is important not only in …
