Fine Structure Of The Malpighian Tubules In Gryllus Campestris(Linnaeus, 1758) (Orthoptera, Gryllidae), Irmak Polat, Nurcan Özyurt, Damla Amutkan, Zeki̇ye Suludere, Selami̇ Candan
Turkish Journal of Zoology
The Malpighian tubules are responsible for excretion and osmoregulation in insects. The Malpighian system consists of tubules that are closed at the distal end and extend from the point of junction of the midgut and hindgut. This organ helps the water and electrolyte balance of the internal metabolism by filtration with absorption of water and soluble materials as mineral salts from the hemolymph. In this study, the histology of Malpighian tubules in Gryllus campestris (Orthoptera, Gryllidae) has been examined in detail by light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The distal ends of the Malpighian tubules in G. …

Turkish Journal of Zoology
Chaetopleura hennahi (Gray, 1828) is a chiton species characterized by its low profile, a comparatively large and wide body with reddish brown valves, and the presence of short hairs only in the rather narrow mantle. This rare species has been previously cited from Peru and Chile, with a dubious record near Ringdove Inlet in Canal Smyth, southern Chile; however, no field records have confirmed its presence in Chile. Here we present the first confirmed record for C. hennahi in the country based on two specimens found attached to rocks collected from commercial fisheries off Caldera, northern Chile. Considering this record, …

This study presents information on the diet of two shark species, Carcharhinus leucas and Galeocerdo cuvier, that inhabit the southeastern Pacific Ocean. The stomachs were collected from October 2003 to July 2005 in Ecuador. Stomachs of 41 C. leucas and six G. cuvier were analyzed. According to the index of relative importance (%IRI), the most important prey for C. leucas were fishes: family Ophichthidae (13.41%), Tylosurus pacificus (9.79%), Katsuwonus pelamis (4.54%), and fish remains (44.81%). G. cuvier, for its part, consumed squids: Ancistrocheirus lesueuri (45.14%), Pholidoteuthis boschmaii (7.81%), and Octopoteuthis spp. (5.17%), as well as turtles: Caretta caretta (9.7%), Lepidochelys …

The occurrence of the alien Charybdis (Gonioinfradens) paucidentatus is reported from Santorini Island after repeated underwater surveys carried out in 2014-2015. The findings constitute the first record of an Indo-Pacific brachyuran in the south-central Aegean Sea, showing the successful expansion of this portunid recently introduced into the eastern Mediterranean Sea.
