Schistosome Dermatitis At Basswood Lake, Minnesota, James A. Zischke, Deloris Palmquist Zischke

During the summer of 1965 cases of schistosome dermatitis were reported at the Associated Colleges of the Midwest Wilderness Field, Station on Basswood Lake, Minnesota. Collection and isolation of gastropods from the lake revealed an extremely high incidence of Trichobilharzia ocellata infections in Lymnaea stagnalis. A flock of semi-domestic mallard ducks first introduced al the lake in 1963 are believed to be the principal definitive hosts contributing to the epidemiology of the parasite in the area.

Radio-Tracking The Movements Of A Young Male Raccoon, Frank J. Turkowski, L. David Mech

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Movements of o young male raccoon (Procyon lotor) were studied for four months in 1965 through the use of an automatic radio-tracking system. Data for 135 days were collected, and 2,065 locations were recorded. The study animal usually rested throughout the day at different sites. Nightly activity usually began within an hour before or after sunset and ceased within an hour before or after sunrise; the mean duration of the active period was 9 hours and 5 minutes (S.E. = 19 minutes). The incidence of lead shot in l ,687 lesser scaup (Athya affinis) and 416 ring-necked ducks (Athya collaris) in spring migration in Minnesota and the implications as related to the bird population and hunting harvest the preceding fall are considered in this study. The ducks, which were examined for shot by photofluorographic radiography had died as a result of oil pollution on the Mississippi River in the vicinity of Red Wing in the spring of 1963. A 'New' Hybrid Minnow, Gary L. Phillips, David A. Etnier

The specimen of a hybrid between the minnows Chrosomus erythrogaster and Dionda nubila is described. Taken in southeastern Minnesota near the known northernmost distributional limits of both parent species, this hybrid is between the parental extremes in most of the anatomical features examined.

Wieczorowski S. - The alimentary tract and the lungs parasites in hares in Białystok voivodship

87 parasitic sections were made of hares coming from Białystok voivodship territory. The investigations lead to the conclusion that the hares are 100 percent invaded by parasites. Among the roundworms of the alimentary tract, the most frequent are the following: Trichostrongylus retortaeformis (78.1 percent) and Trichocephalus sylvilagi (43 percent). Coccidiosis is also widespread; it was found in 77 percent of the investigated animals.

Specimens of spotted skunks acquired from western Mexico by the Museum of Natural History at the University of Kansas in the past two decades add substantially to the knowledge of the species occurring in that region. Two specimens of the rare Spilogale pygmaea (one from Sinaloa and one from Oaxaca) are reported for the first time. Two subspecies of pygmy spotted skunk are recognized - S. p. pygmaea Thomas with type locality at Rosario, Sinaloa, and S. p. australis Hall with type locality at Acapulco, Guerrero.

From July 6 to 11, 1966, vertebrates were collected on Volcan de Fuego, Jalisco, for the Museum of Natural History,the University of Kansas, by Hugh H. Genoways and Percy L. Clifton. On July 10, a shrew of the genus Cryptotis was obtained on a steep slope across the valley to the north of the active cone of the volcano. University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Excepting the generalized accounts of Over and Churchill (1945), no attempt has been made previously to summarize the distribution of bats in South Dakota. In 1960, 1961, and again in 1965, field parties from the Museum of Natural History of The University of Kansas collected mammals in that state. Bats obtained by these parties, together with those on deposit in other institutions and the few specimens earlier reported from South Dakota by other workers (see cited literature), form the basis of the present report. Eleven species are here treated; two of these are represented in the state by two subspecies. …

An Examination Of A Putative System For The In Vitro Synthesis Of Drosophila Tryptophan Pyrrolase, John P. Phillips

A system, reported by Morrison (1964), for the in vitro synthesis of Drosophila tryptophan pyrrolase has been critically studied. This putative system is based on the addition of a Drosophila "RNA" extract to a Drosophila cell-free protein synthesizing system; the synthesized enzyme is then allowed to catalyze a specific reaction, the product of which is measured by direct adsorption.

The results of this study present a three-fold argument against the interpretation of synthesis of tryptophan pyrrolase in the Morrison in vitro system: (1) RNA from a null-allele, v^36f, stimulated the same tryptophan pyrrolase "activity" in the in vitro …

Goodwin (American Museum Novitates, 2243: 1-4, 1966) named Microtus oaxacensis on the basis of a single male taken in "evergreen rain forest at Tarahundi, a ranch near the village of Vista Hermosa," at an altitude of "about 5,000 feet" in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. A new subspecies of Myotis thysanodes, possibly representing a disjunct population, is described from the Black Hills of South Dakota and Wyoming. The new race is compared with M. t. thysanodes and also with Myotis evotis evotis, which it superficially resembles.
