During more than a quarter of a century I have been making notes and collecting information about the Owls of Lincoln county and it seemed an opportune time to put this information into print that it might be available to those who are interested in birds and serve as a basis for further study and amplification. Lincoln County is not usually considered a favorable place for Owls to reside on account of the absence of heavy timber over most of its area. The economic status in South Dakota of the ring-necked pheasant (Phasinus colchicus torquatus Gmelin X Phasianus colchicus colchicus L.) has turned out to be a controversial matter of no small importance with the citizenry of the State. This bird was introduced into South Dakota mainly thru the efforts and funds of the State Department of Game and Fish, and thru this department the pheasant was protected form slaughter by hunters, and permitted to multiply. The Food Habits Of The Ring-Necked Pheasant In Central Nebraska, M. H. Swenk
Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins
Pheasants, including the Chinese and the so-called English pheasants, with their hybrid the ring-necked pheasant, have been introduced and established in a large area in the northern United States during the past 50 years. During the past 15 years continued importations of these birds into Nebraska, together with the rapid increase of those already established, have built up a large pheasant population in the state, estimated at more than a million birds. They have especially thrived in a block of 16 counties in east-central Nebraska. Protection was afforded them until 1927, when short open seasons were permitted in the fall …
