In vertebrates, melatonin regulates many components of the circadian rhythm; depending on the organism’s location and time of year, the pineal gland will produce melatonin accordingly, controlling the sleep-wake cycle and breeding physiologies. However, locations at the poles in which the sun is above the horizon for multiple days at a time pose unique challenges for the organisms living there. The goal of this study was to examine how the implantation of melatonin in an arctic-breeding songbird affects its activity levels and circadian rhythm. Letters of WKU English faculty member Gordon Wilson to fellow faculty member Frances Richards and her sister Mary Ellen Richards, Franklin, Kentucky. The folklorist and accomplished amateur ornithologist writes effusively about his life and post-retirement work, including his autobiography and his linguistic and bird studies in the Mammoth Cave region. He reports various bird sightings and counts to Mary Ellen, discusses upcoming speeches and publications, shares news of his family, friends and health, and thanks Frances for gifts of phonograph records. Includes notes from his wife written after his death.

Transcriptomic Response To Immune Challenge In Zebra Finch (Taeniopygia Guttata) Using Rna-Seq, Cassandra Scalf

Despite the convergence of rapid technological advances in genomics and the maturing field of ecoimmunology, our understanding of the genes that regulate immunity in wild populations is still nascent. Previous work to assess immune function has relied upon relatively crude measures of immunocompetence. However, with next-generation RNA-sequencing, it is now possible to create a profile of gene expression in response to an immune challenge. In this study, captive zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata; adult males) were challenged with bacterial lipopolysaccharide (2 mg/Kg BW; dissolved in 0.9% saline) or vehicle (0.9% saline) to stimulate the immune system.
