Diel Fish Habitat Selection In A Tributary Stream, Andria K. Salas, Eric B. Snyder

This study investigated the location and diel habitat preferences (at 100 m reach scale) of fish in a small tributary stream in late spring, early summer. During the day, coho (Oncorhynchus kisutch) preferred areas with more cover (deeper, greater extent of undercut banks) vs. night when LWD was preferred (Pearson correlation and step-wise MLR). Chinook (O. tshawytscha) exhibited an opposite pattern, preferring LWD during the day vs. higher velocity at night. This suggests these two potadromous species may be partitioning resources. The ability to appropriately interact with the environment is crucial to an organism’s survival. The establishment of functional sensory systems, such as the bristles and eyes in Drosophila, is a critical event during the development of the organism. The transcription factor D Pax2 is involved in the differentiation of the shaft and glial cells in the developing bristle (Kavaler et al., Dev, 126:2261-2272, 1999) and of the cone and primary pigment cells in the developing eye (Fu and Noll, Genes Dev, 11:389-405, 1997). How D-Pax2 contributes to distinct differentiative pathways in different cell types is not known. Recent work by …

The present study was undertaken to investigate cyclic changes in the structure of oviduct epithelial cells, and the content of oviductal mucus in the Angora rabbit using light and electron microscopy. Ten female Angora rabbits, 5 of which were in the estrual stage and the other 5 were in the luteal stage of the estrous cycle, were used in the study. Tissue samples taken from the fimbria, ampulla and isthmus of the oviduct were examined under light and electron microscope. The lack of reliable diagnostic methods is a setback in the effective control of diseases. Diagnosis of Trypanosoma evansi infection (surra) in livestock is of considerable economic importance. Detection of trypanosomes in blood has been the "gold standard"; however, finding the organisms or establishing patency of parasitaemia has not always been possible even in symptomatic infections. As a consequence of low dose infection, the pre-patent period in Trypanosoma evansi may be longer and, even when symptoms have developed, trypanosomes may still not be demonstrable in blood, thus delaying treatment and thereby increasing morbidity and mortality. Water is a key resource for most large bodied mammals in the world’s arid areas. With the growing human population, access to water for wildlife often becomes compromised. Equids are typical inhabitants of semi-arid to arid rangelands and need regular access to fresh water. However, their water needs are difficult to study under free-ranging conditions. There has been on‐going research conducted by South Dakota State University in the area of the consumption of high‐sulfur (S) water by steers grazing rangeland. During the summer of 2009 a trial was conducted in cooperation with the University of Wyoming on the effects of copper supplementation of grazing pasture steers supplemented with molybdenum (Mo), while drinking high‐sulfur water. The feeding value of dried distillers grains plus solubles (DDGS) is a combination of its contributions to protein nutrition as well as caloric intake of cattle. When DDGS is included in diets at levels where dietary CP has been met, the feeding value would primarily be a function of caloric density. A replicated 4 x 4 metabolism study was conducted to measure the caloric value of DDGS at high inclusion levels. Diets were formulated to contain 0, 12, 24, or 36% DDGS. Cows detected in estrus around the time of fixed-time AI had increased pregnancy success and progesterone concentrations. Additionally, GnRH following onset of estrus influenced LH pulse frequency and CL formation/function. Therefore our objective was to determine steriodogenic enzyme expression within luteal tissue of cows that were or were not detected in standing estrus prior to an injection of GnRH. This study was conducted on the campus of the regional department of the forestry service, encompassing 2.25 ha in Antalya city center. The area has gardens and is surrounded by trees, providing nesting and feeding opportunities for many songbird species. Ten monogonont rotifer species new for the Turkish fauna discovered in 2007 are discussed: Cephalodella delicata Wulfert, C. cf. forceps Donner, C. misgurnus Wulfert, Dipleuchlanis propatula (Gosse), Encentrum limicola Otto, E. mustela (Milne), Lecane aculeate (Jakubski), L. paradoxa (Steinecke), Notommata glyphura Wulfert, and Proales similis de Beauchamp. Eight are widely distributed, but C. cf. forceps Donner and L. paradoxa (Steinecke) have been recorded only from the Palearctic. Important parts of the trophi structure of some species are shown using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, pH, and water temperature were also measured.

The Caspian Sea forms the southern limit of the distribution range of the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus), but little is known about its life history in this area. A total of 362 specimens were collected from the Gomishan wetland (southeast Caspian Sea, Iran) to describe the stickleback's life history characteristics. Samples were taken monthly between February and July of 2008. The maximum ages of the population observed were 2+ years for males and 3+ years for females. The purpose of this study was to determine if an exercise threshold existed in stimulating an elevation in bone mineral density (BMD), via resistance training, during the growth period in male rats. 27 male rats were randomly divided into Control (Con, n = 9), 3 ladder climb resistance trained group (3LC, n = 9), and 6 ladder climb resistance trained group (6LC, n = 9). The 3LC and 6LC groups were conditioned to climb a vertical ladder with weights appended to their tail 3 days/wk for a total of 6 wks, but the 6LC group performed significantly more work than …

The species of Gugolzia (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea, Pteromalidae) in Europe and Turkey were reviewed, and an identification key for differentiating the species is provided. Newly discovered diagnostic characters of the genus were added to the diagnoses given by earlier authors. Species were recorded as parasitoids of phytophagous Eurytomidae (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea). New host and distributions are for Gugolzia harmolitae, which was reared from Tetramesa romana feeding on shoots of Arundo donax (Poaceae), Gugolzia karadagae n.sp. from Eurytoma plotnikovi feeding on fruits of Pistacia vera together with Megastigmus pistaciae (Chalcidoidea: Torymidae) in Gaziantep province, and Gugolzia melengicia n.sp. from fruits of Pistacia terebinthi …

A Contribution To The Tachinid Flies Of The Subfamilies Exoristinae And Tachininae (Diptera: Tachinidae) From Fars Province, Iran, Mehdi Gheibi, Hadi Ostovan, Karim Kamali

Data are given on the distribution of 40 species belonging to the subfamilies Exoristinae and Tachininae that were collected by the first author in Fars province, Iran, during 2006-2007. In all, 22 species were recorded for the first time from Iran and 34 species from Fars province. Erynniopsis antennata (Rondani, 1861) was reared for the first time on the host Diorhabda elongate (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae).

Verdanus artvinensis n. sp. from northeastern Turkey is described and illustrated. The main characteristics of this species are compared with those of V. pazoukii (Dlabola, 1980), a closely related species. A key to distinguish these 2 species is provided.

Investigations of the inland water bodies of southeast Azerbaijan (mainly near the city of Lenkoran and its suburbs) yielded 11 additional species of freshwater testate amoebae. Among these, 7 species (Oopyxis lenkoranica sp.n., Pentagonia azerbaijanica sp.n., Difflugia lenkoranica sp.n., D.talyshica sp.n., D.sapnakeranica sp.n., D.pressula sp.n., and D.girkanica sp.n.) are new to science. Descriptions of all 11 species are given.

Distributional data and the chorotype of all known taxa of Turkish species of the subgenus Microlaccobius Gentili, 1974 are summarized. The taxonomic position of Laccobius gracilis persicus Gentili, 1974 is discussed and L. persicus is elevated to the level of valid species and new record for the Turkish fauna. A short identification key of Turkish species of the subgenus is also given.

New Records Of Leptostracans (Crustacea, Phyllocarida) From The Eastern Mediterranean, Cengi̇z Koçak, Juan Moreira, Tuncer Katağan

Knowledge about leptostracans from the Mediterranean Sea is still scarce. Examination of samples collected from the Aegean Sea off Turkey and from Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean Sea revealed new localities and range extensions for 2 species of leptostracans: Nebalia strausi Risso, 1826, and N. kocatasi Moreira, Koçak, and Katagan, 2007. The record of N. kocatasi is the first for Cyprus and for the Levantine Basin. Additional specimens (Nebalia sp. 1 and Nebalia sp. 2) might prove to belong to 2 new species but the lack of material prevents their formal description.

Histology Of The Androgenic Gland In Eriphia Verrucosa (Forskål, 1775) (Decapoda, Brachyura), Meli̇ke Erkan, Yasemi̇n Tunali, Serap Eki̇nci̇, Si̇mge Kara

This study investigated the histology of the androgenic gland in Eriphia verrucosa (Forskål, 1775). The results obtained with light microscopy show that the androgenic gland in this species consists of 2 cell types. Type 1 cells are small and do not contain a secretory product. Type 2 cells are considerably larger and may produce a proteinaceous secretion. This study identified the location and structure of the androgenic gland in Eriphia verrucosa, which is an economically important brachyuran crab, and revealed the chemical nature of the secretions produced by its cells.

Between April 2007 and October 2008 we collected 1995 horse mackerel specimens from the territorial waters of the Bulgarian Black Sea. Age, length, and weight of these specimens were determined to estimate length-weight relationships and age composition. The present study utilized otolith characterization to determine age. The sex ratio was 1:1.36686 (M:F). The prevalent age classes were 2+, 3+, and 4+. The exponent b of equation resulted in the value 3.3046, which indicates that the weight growth is positive allometric. Age, growth, length-weight relationship and reproduction were investigated for striped seabream (Lithognathus mormyrus L., 1758) collected from Beymelek Lagoon (Antalya, Turkey) between February 2006 and January 2007. The ages of striped seabream ranged from 0 to 3 years for males and from 0 to 4 years for females. Their total lengths and weights ranged between 14.4 and 26.4 cm and 42 and 297 g for males and 14.3 and 27.4 cm and 40 and 329 g for females, respectively. In this study, length and weight data are presented for 33 fish species inhabiting littoral habitats off the Yumurtalık coast. Samples were collected with combined gill and trammel nets. Parameters of the length-weight relationships were estimated for 14 species. The b values ranged between 2.35 and 3.53. For remained 19 species, the parameter a was estimated by setting b = 3.0.

The karyotype of Pseudophoxinus antalyae was analyzed using G-banding, C-banding, Ag-NOR staining, and Q-banding. Chromosome analysis of this species, which lives in the Berdan River and Berdan Dam Lake, was performed with the air-drying technique, using gill and fin epithelium cells. The diploid chromosome number of P. antalyae was determined to be 2n = 50, comprising 16 metacentric, 14 submetacentric, 12 subtelocentric, and 8 acrocentric (NF = 92) chromosomes. The largest chromosome pair of the complements was characteristically a submetacentric. The nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) were apparently located in subtelocentric chromosome pairs. Many non-human species imitate the behavior of others, and dolphins seem particularly adept at this form of observational learning. Evidence for observational learning in wild dolphins is rare, given the difficulty of observing individual wild animals in sufficient detail to eliminate other possible explanations of purported imitation. Consequently, much of the evidence supporting observational learning in dolphins has involved animals in captive settings. This research suggests that dolphins have an affinity for mimicry, and that they are more successful at observational learning if they choose to imitate another rather than being asked to do so. A newly developed biphasic feed lipid extraction procedure has increased accuracy relative to Goldfisch ether extraction, especially for condensed corn distillers solubles samples. A pre-NDF fat extraction must be completed prior to analyzing high fat feeds for NDF. Corn should be ground through a 1-mm screen on a Tecator Cyclotec sample mill to accurately determine corn NDF content.

A metabolism trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary fat source on the metabolism characteristics of feedlot steers fed 8.5% fat (7% fatty acids) diets. Steers fed condensed corn distillers solubles (CCDS) had lower average pH and greater DM digestibility than those fed corn oil, tallow, or WDGS. Steers fed CCDS also had greater fat and fatty acid digestibility than corn and corn oil fed steers and greater NDF digestibility than corn oil or tallow fed steers. Although CCDS fat is similar to corn oil, the two feeds are digested differently. The omasal fatty acid profile of steers …
