Endocrine And Reproductive Responses To Implants Of Deslorein Acetate In Horses, Carrie Ann Johnson

Four experiments were performed to study the effects of the gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) analog, deslorelin acetate (Ovuplant™), on endocrine and reproductive characteristics in mares. The first experiment tested whether anecdotal field reports of Ovuplant causing extended interovulatory intervals would be detectable under controlled, experimental conditions. The use of Ovuplant to hasten ovulation in 13 mares, compared to 12 controls, increased (P < 0.05) the interovulatory interval by 6.2 d and suppressed (P < 0.05) plasma concentrations of both luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) for approximately 11 d. Two mares receiving Ovuplant did not return to estrus within 30 d. In the second experiment, 10 control mares and 10 mares induced to ovulate with Ovuplant were administered GnRH (50 μg) on d 1, 4, 7, and 10 after ovulation. Again, treated mares had a longer (4.4 d, P < 0.05) interovulatory interval and suppressed LH and FSH concentrations in daily plasma samples. The gonadotropin response to GnRH was lower (P < 0.05) in the deslorelin mares on d 1, 4, and 7, indicating a lack of pituitary responsiveness. In the third experiment, 9 stallions and 12 steroid-treated geldings were used to determine if males were potential models for studying the deslorelin-induced gonadotropin suppression. In both cases, treatment with Ovuplant caused an initial rise in both gonadotropins followed by suppression for about 14 d. In the last experiment, 21 mares were used to determine if multiple doses of deslorelin would cause complete ovarian shutdown. Mares received either sham injections, three Ovuplant implants on the first day, or one implant per day for 3 d (n = 7 per group). Treatment with multiple deslorelin implants increased (P < 0.05) the interovulatory interval by 14.8 d and suppressed LH and FSH concentrations for approximately 25 d, however no mares exhibited complete ovarian shutdown. In conclusion, deslorelin acetate implants in horses in the form of Ovuplant induce short-term increases in LH and FSH secretion followed by long-term suppression of these concentrations and an insensitivity of the pituitary to GnRH. In a small percentage of mares, long-term ovarian shutdown is a possibility.

A series of experiments were conducted to produce transgenic goats by somatic cell nuclear transfer (NT). In all experiments, donor cells were electrically fused to enucleated metaphase II oocytes, then chemically activated. In a preliminary study to evaluate embryonic development following NT with proliferating or quiescent fibroblast or cumulus cells, significantly more embryos reconstructed with quiescent cumulus cells fused (77%) compared with proliferating cumulus cells (41%), proliferating fibroblasts (36%) or quiescent fibroblasts (37%). Two concentrated products were evaluated: recovered milk product (RMP), which is the direct factory waste stream; and formulated recovered milk product (FRMP), which is a product made by combining RMP and separator de-sludge in a 3:1 ratio. Allocreadium lobatum Wallin 1909, a parasite of fresh-water fish, was originally described as having distinct lobate testes, and subsequent descriptions have left this original description unchanged. The present study quantifies the observation of distinctly non-lobate testes that could be categorized as round or asymmetrical in addition to the previously described lobate testes. Six hundred thirty-six A. lobatum were collected from 228 Semotilus atromaculatus over a 9 month period. Two cases of organophosphate toxicity were diagnosed at the University of Arkansas Poultry Science Department poultry research farm in the Spring of 2002. In both cases the birds were being treated with the organophosphate RaVap® for Northern Fowl Mites (Ornithonyssus sylvarium) infestations. A total of 61 birds died and 13 were treated successfully with atropine sulphate.

This study was performed to determine the incidence and anatomo-pathologic aspects of reproductive organ tumors in laying chickens. For this research, 10,475 16-18-month-old, commercial laying hens of the Babcock genotype were obtained from four flocks in Afyon city. They were examined right after slaughtering, and reproductive organ tumors in 804 hens (7.67%) were observed. This study was carried out to determine height at withers, heart girth and cannon bone circumference measurements in purebred Arabian colts and fillies at Çifteler State Farm. Data obtained from the 1980-1998 marketing catalogue, which includes 535 colts and 392 fillies in Çifteler State Farm, were used. The aim of this research is to determine the yield and chemical composition of the caviar produce from flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus, Lin.1758) in the Sufa lagoon. Acording to the results of our research 21.98% of the fish with an average live weight of 1,243.63 ± 322.44 g and 49.11 ± 3.83 cm length contains with roe. Two methods to measure target strength (TS) are introduced and compared with each other. One is the suspension method, and the other is the split-beam method. Each of them is representative of control and in situ methods, respectively. In addition, a morphological investigation of a swimbladder in a pressure tank, and the development of an instrumented package of acoustic and optical systems, are also introduced. The former is to reveal the degree of TS variation by the vertical movement of fish, and the latter is to obtain precise TS and fish behavior by the echo trace analysis method.

The distribution of ionotropic glutamate receptor subunits (GluR1-4), considered a-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isaxole propionic acid type (AMPA-type), was investigated in the rat spinal cord by immunocytochemistry. Different distributions of the AMPA-type glutamate receptor subunits were observed in the spinal cord. Immunolabelling with antibodies to both GluR1 and GluR2/3 revealed intensive staining in the dorsal horn, while staining for GluR2/3 and GluR4 revealed dense motor neurones in the ventral horn. These results suggest that in the rat spinal cord AMPA-type glutamate receptors vary in composition according to the region where they are expressed.

Infection with the parasite Diplostomum sp. can lead to severe ocular pathology and may result in host mortalities in commercial fish farming. Here we show that such infection is rife in a major lake used for fishing in Turkey. In a study of Acanthobrama marmid fish in Keban Dam Lake, Elazığ, Turkey, we found the infection period was normally between May and September each year, and that the prevalence and abundance of eye lens parasites reached a maximum in September.
