The effects of long-term administration of ethyl alcohol on insulin and glucagon hormone levels during pregnancy and lactation periods of rats were investigated. Female wistar albinos, 200±20 g, were used in this study. The control group consisted of 15 rats, and the experimental group consist of 25 ethyl-alcohol-addicted rats. While 0.9% saline (with sucrose) was to the control group, a 5 g kg perday dose of 20% ethyl alcohol was given to the experimental group. This study involved two separate experiments to determine the effects of tannic acid and lignosulfonate treatments of sunflower seed meal on the digestibility and rumen degradability characteristics of some nutrients in rams. Sunflower seed meal was treated with 3, 6 and 9% tannic acid, 5 and 10% lignosulfonate. In the first experiment, the digestibility coefficients of dry matter, organic matter and crude protein of sunflower seed meal samples were determined by a faeces collection method using 5 merino rams aged 1.5 years and weighing 66.5 kg. In this study, chemical and sensory changes were investigated in pike-perch (Sander lucioperca Bogustkaya & Naseka,1996) fillets during frozen storage (-18 ºC) of 7 months. Total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N, mg N/100 g), thiobarbituric acid (TBA, mg malonaldehyde/1000 g) and pH were considered as chemical quality criteria of fish flesh. TVB-N value was 4.19 mg N/100 g at the beginning, but increased to 14.90 mg N/100 g at the end of the research. For food and environmental analysis, coliform bacteria and especially E. coli should be determined and enumerated rapidly, correctly and economically. Even if the results are obtained either by traditional or improved techniques, the results require confirmation, meaning that these techniques are not reliable. Confirmation tests need additional time and/or cost. In this study, 500 food samples of 10 various types were analyzed for their natural coliform contamination by the standard MPN method and E. coli by two MUG based MPN techniques. The light microscopic and ultrastructural changes observed in the single kidney of pregnant rats were detected during mid-term pregnancy and after parturition and the results were compared with those of the pure nephrectomized group. The experimental studies were performed on 24 female virgin rats and all of them were subjected to unilateral nephrectomy. No pathology was observed in the light microscopic examination of the kidneys of the groups. In the transmission electron microscopic examination, in the pure nephrectomized group, cell swellings were present in the endothelial cells of the interlobular arteries and arterioles. Characterisation Of An Exopolysaccharide Preventing Phage Adsorption In Lactococcus Lactis Subsp. Cremoris Ma39, Mustafa Akçeli̇k, Pinar Şanlibaba
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris strain MA39 produces an extracellular polysaccharide containing rhamnose, glucose and galactose. A 16.5 kb plasmid encoding exopolysaccharide production in MA39 was determined by plasmid curing experiments. Phage adsorption assays showed that four different lactococcal phages were adsorbed to MA39-40; only the 16.5 kb plasmid cured an exopolysaccharide non-producing mutant of strain MA39, with high efficiency (93.2-98.5%) while adsorption of these phages was completely inhibited in the wild type strain MA39. These results suggest that exopolysaccharide prevents phage adsorption by masking phage receptor sites.

Male Wistar albino rats, bred and fed under standard laboratory conditions, were administered for 20 days two dosages [Group I: 750 mg/kg body weight (n = 15) and Group II: 1500 mg/kg body weight (n = 15)] of oral hexachlorobenzene resolved in corn oil. Control group animals (n = 15) received only corn oil for 20 days. Twenty-four hours after the administration of the last dose, renal tissue samples, obtained by laparotomy, were fixed in 3% glutaraldehyde in phosphate buffer and 1% aqueous osmium tetroxide. A case of neonatal renal oxalosis in a 7-day-old calf is described. Clinical biochemistry revealed increased blood urea nitrogen. Gross findings included thin renal medulla and dilated renal calyces containing numerous, small, pale yellow and granular calculi. Histologically, most cortical and medullary tubules were dilated with birefringent crystals, whereas the glomeruli appeared unaffected. The crystals were morphologically consistent with calcium oxalate by the Pizzolato technique. Diffuse interstitial fibrosis and focal accumulations of lymphocytes were also noted.

A trivalent Escherichia coli vaccine (TECA) was prepared from serotypes O1, O2 and O78 and one series of TECA was combined with an inactivated Newcastle Disease vaccine. TECA and combined vaccine were experimentally investigated for immunogenic effects in pullets and hens. This study was carried out at two stages consisting of rearing and laying periods: (1) A number of fourty chicks aged 15 days were subcutaneously vaccinated with 0.2 ml TECA . In this research, the colourfullness and the relationships between colourfullness and physical characteristics in the coarse and down fibres obtained from hair goats raised in the provinces of Antalya, Artvin, Diyarbakır, İzmir, Kars and Konya in Turkey were studied. In this study, 275 serum samples collected from cattle at various ages and of both sexes, slaughtered at state or private abattoirs in Elazığ, Malatya and Diyarbakır were examined by MAT and ELISA for the presence of antibodies against Leptospira species. In the serological analysis, using antigens prepared from reference Leptospira hardjo, L. pomona, L. grippotyphosa, L. hebdomadis, and L. icterohaemorrhagiae cultures, 44 (16%) and 64 (23.3%) of the samples were determined to be positive with MAT and ELISA, respectively.

The quality of the largemouth bass fishery at Freshwater Lagoon was evaluated by assessing age structure, stock structure, condition, and growth characteristics. A total of 1,511 largemouth bass was sampled from 1986 through 2000 using a boat electroshocker. Scales were collected from 706 fish and assigned ages. Eleven age classes were identified with a maximum age of 10 years. Age assignment precision between two readings was 95%. Paired scale and otolith (sagittae) samples were collected via hook-and-line from 20 largemouth bass in spring and early summer of 2002.
