Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The levels of adenosine deaminase in different periods of pregnancy and after parturition were investigated in 13 ewes. Blood samples were collected on the day of mating and on days 10, 21, 35, 75, 104, 144 of pregnancy and on day 10 after parturition. Sera were harvested from these samples and adenosine deaminase levels were assayed as IU/L. Adenosine deaminase levels were high on the day of mating and after parturition but decreased during pregnancy. The lowest level was assayed just before parturition. Levels at the sampling times were 8.91, 8.30, 5.50, 3.96, 3.80, 2.18, 1.67 and 10.51 IU/L, respectively. …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In this study, the population variability in chromosome numbers of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) cultured in 10 farms in the Northeast Black Sea Region of Turkey is examined. From the analysis of 468 anterior kidney tissue cells from 118 specimens, 7 distinct diploid numbers, namely 2n=58, 2n=59, 2n=60, 2n=61, 2n=62, 2n=63 and 2n=64, were found. The most frequent karyotypes with proportions of 25.2% and 24.8% were 2n=60 and 2n=62 respectively. Extensive Robertsonian polymorphisms were determined. According to the polymorphism results, it was concluded that the strains in these farms probably originated from European culture populations and the need to repopulate …

Investigation Of Therapeutic And Possible Toxic Effects Of Gentamicin And Enrofloxacin In Combination Against Experimental Salmonella Enteritidis Infection In Embryonated Eggs, Saeid Akbarzahed Kolahi, Oya Keleş
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The efficacy of the combination of gentamicin and enrofloxacin on the reduction of Salmonella enteritidis contamination rates in embryonated eggs that were experimentally infected was studied. In order to determine the optimum concentration of the combination for egg injection, the antibacterial activities of these antibiotics were tested in vitro against Salmonella enteritidis by the serial broth macrodilution method. The in vitro interaction test of gentamicin and enrofloxacin has indicated that these two antibacterial agents had an additive effect against Salmonella enteritidis. In order to examine the effect of the combination of gentamicin and enrofloxacin in vivo the eggs that were …

Trifolium pratense contains phytoestrogens and thus it has estrogenic activity. Estrogen has an important role in the development of the reproductive system and the maintanence of its function, and for this reason the effect of Trifolium pratense on sperm parameters and spermatogenesis was examined. Furthermore, its acute toxicity was established. In this study, the motility and morphology of epididymal spermatozoa taken from animals fed diets contains 20% and 40% Trifolium pratense, were affected. Statistically insignificant differences in the diameter of the seminiferous tubule and the number of primary spermatocytes between the control and experimental groups were observed. Intraperitoneal LD_{50} was …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In this study, 18 adult guinea pigs, weighing 300-450 g, were divided into three equal groups, and their small intestinal segments (proximal and distal ileum) were removed and kept in vitro in an isolated organ bath in order to record the responses mainly produced by lead and acetylcholine. For the tissues of the first group, the noncumulative concentration-response curves of lead obtained were compared by applications at concentrations ranging from 3x10^{-8} M to 3x10^{-5} M alone, in the presence of verapamil (3x10^{-5} M) and in Ca^{++} free solution. In the second group, the responses to lead at the same concentrations …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This study was performed to determine the relationship between the corpus luteum weight/diameter, follicular diameter and the levels of vitamin C, progesterone and oestradiol 17-\beta of the plasma, corpus luteum and follicular fluid of pregnant Holstein cows in a slaughterhouse. Progesterone and oestradiol 17-\beta concentrations were determined by the microtitration plate EIA method. Vitamin C levels were determined by spectrophotometer. Although there was a positive correlation between follicular fluid oestradiol 17-\beta levels and the follicle diameter in the follicular fluid, in contrast to oestradiol 17-\beta levels, small follicles have higher progesterone content than large follicles. This negative correlation was due …
