Leaf Freckles And Wilt Of Corn Incited By Corynebacterium Nebraskense Schuster, Hoff, Mandel, Lazar, 1972, M. L. Schuster May 1975

Leaf Freckles And Wilt Of Corn Incited By Corynebacterium Nebraskense Schuster, Hoff, Mandel, Lazar, 1972, M. L. Schuster

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

The new bacterial disease Leaf Freckles and Wilt (LFW) of corn (Zea mays L.) was first observed in 1969 on two farms in southcentral Nebraska. Since then it has spread to other areas in the state. LFW is a serious disease on farms in six Nebraska counties (Clay, Custer, Dawson, Furnas, Hall and Phelps) and has been found in isolated cases in at least 28 other counties. In 1971 LFW was found in a seedcorn field in western Iowa, in 1973 in two Kansas counties, and in 1974 in South Dakota and Colorado. Because of its explosive nature, several …

An Interregional Competition Study Of Utah Agriculture Using The Linear Programming Technique, Douglas Lee Andersen May 1975

An Interregional Competition Study Of Utah Agriculture Using The Linear Programming Technique, Douglas Lee Andersen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purposes of this paper were to inventory the available agricultural production resources in Utah, to determine how those resources could be allocated most efficiently, and to provide information to aid the crop and livestock producing sectors in Utah in making informed production and marketing decisions.

Utah was divided into eight agricultural production and product consumption regions and the rest of the country was regionalized into product supply and market areas. Input and output coefficients, production costs, and market prices for the major Utah crop and livestock production enterprises and their products were developed. A linear program was then used …

Investigation Of Factors Contributing To The Declining Range Sheep Industry In Utah, Jerry W. Boehme May 1975

Investigation Of Factors Contributing To The Declining Range Sheep Industry In Utah, Jerry W. Boehme

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this paper is to document the major reasons sheep producers are liquidating their business, and to provide some insight into the present use of land and labor resources taken out of sheep production, Data compiled for the study were obtained from personnel interviews of former sheep producers statistically selected from a master list of all producers who stopped sheep production from 1968 to June 1974. The general characteristics of Utah sheep ranches were presented followed by an analysis of producers who, and the reasons why, they sold their herds, The last section of the report documents the …

Relationships Between Teat Shape, Teat Erosion, California Mastitis Test, And Milk Production In A Large Dairy Herd, John Sephen Malan May 1975

Relationships Between Teat Shape, Teat Erosion, California Mastitis Test, And Milk Production In A Large Dairy Herd, John Sephen Malan

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Data were collected from a 1,000 cow commercial dairy unit during three different time periods to determine the interrelationships between teat shape, teat erosion, mastitis (as measured by the California Mastitis Test and somatic cell counts), and milk production.

Results showed no relationship between teat shape or teat end erosion and milk or fat production. The relationship between teat end erosion and mastitis appeared to be masked by the high level of teat erosion. There was an indication that cows with flat and cone shaped teat ends were prone to higher California Mastitis Test scores than cows with pointed, round, …

Economics Of Land Use Planning: A Case Study Of Annexation In Heber Valley, Utah, Lyle C. Summers May 1975

Economics Of Land Use Planning: A Case Study Of Annexation In Heber Valley, Utah, Lyle C. Summers

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Some theories and methodologies applicable to land use planning problems were reviewed along with the history of land use and land use legislation in the United States and Utah. This review served to point out that federal land use policy is moving away from the incentive approach to controlling land use and toward a more mandatory approach aimed at giving increased emphasis to environmental quality and less to economic efficiency.

A model for conceptualizing and analyzing annexation problems was developed and applied to a problem in Heber City, Wasatch County, Utah. The analysis demonstrated that annexation is feasible by showing …

Pesticide Regulation And The Farm Worker, R. Craig Loveless Apr 1975

Pesticide Regulation And The Farm Worker, R. Craig Loveless

IUSTITIA

It has long been recognized that many pesticide products offer a potential hazard, which if unregulated, may result in injury or death. The development of highly toxic pesticides during the last decade has created a need for stricter regulation of pesticide use in the agricultural community. Specifically, the farm worker of today is in need of legislative protection from exposure to deadly chemical agents now being used to control pests and disease in the fields and orchards. Regulating the handling and use of these dangerous pesticides is but one way to protect the farmer, the farm worker, and the environment. …

A Rate/Cost Analysis Of Nebraska Meat Trucking Activities With Livestock Trucking Cost Comparisons, Dale G. Anderson, Wayne W. Budt Mar 1975

A Rate/Cost Analysis Of Nebraska Meat Trucking Activities With Livestock Trucking Cost Comparisons, Dale G. Anderson, Wayne W. Budt

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

This study was designed to measure costs of long-distance shipment of meat by motor carrier. Costs were compared with published rates for meat shipments by truck, rail and trailer-on-flatcar (TOFC). Finally, meat trucking costs were compared with costs of trucking meat-equivalent amounts of livestock. Results of the study provide a partial basis for evaluating the economic merits of expanded livestock production activities in grain-surplus Great Plains locations. Such an expansion might aid in the economic development of the region and ease the chronic problem of rail freight-car supply. Proposals ranging from extension of present regulation to cover livestock trucking to …

Growth Potential Of Sandhills Ranches Through Irrigation, R. D. Carver, G. A. Helmers

Historical Research Bulletins of the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station

The purpose of this study was to compare extensive and intensive growth strategies of a typical Nebraska Sandhills ranch in a dynamic and uncertain environment. Study objectives were to: (1) Analyze growth of an average ranch firm of 450 animal units as it grows to 600-900 animal units. (2) Study the effects of an uncertain environment on the long-run growth opportunities of a ranch firm. (3) Compare extensive and intensive growth of a ranch firm.
