Spatial Analyses And Repletion Of Gargathy Coastal Lagoon, Loreto Herraiz Gomez Oct 2008

Spatial Analyses And Repletion Of Gargathy Coastal Lagoon, Loreto Herraiz Gomez

OES Theses and Dissertations

Coastal lagoons and bays vary in shape and size in response to antecedent topography, geologic processes and sea level rise. Variations in shape and environmental conditions of coastal basins are believed to influence the distribution of benthic sub-environments and the exchange of water with the ocean and other adjacent coastal systems. Gargathy Inlet and its coastal lagoon vary spatially from the inlet, where the greatest depths are observed, to the mainland, dominated by shallow intertidal areas, colonized by marsh. Hypsographic and hydro-hypsographic analyses of Gargathy's coastal lagoon were the primary techniques applied to understand the relative distribution of the benthic …

Towards The Identification Of Lampreys (Lampetra Spp.) In Archaeological Contexts, Ross E. Smith, Virginia L. Butler

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Lampreys were and continue to be an important resource for Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest. Lampreys possess several skeletal structures that are regularly identified in marine mammal and bird stomach contents and fecal samples, suggesting that lamprey elements may preserve in archaeological contexts. However, their remains have not been identified in archaeological faunal samples in the Pacific Northwest. This may be due to the lack of an adequate "search image" for lamprey remains among faunal analysts and limited use of line screen sampling. Descriptions and photographs of lamprey remains that are most likely to survive in archaeological contexts are …

Capturing Hammerhead Ribozyme Structures In Action By Modulating General Base Catalysis, Young-In Chi, Monika Martick, Monica Lares, Rosalind Kim, William G. Scott, Sung-Hou Kim

Center for Structural Biology Faculty Publications

We have obtained precatalytic (enzyme-substrate complex) and postcatalytic (enzyme-product complex) crystal structures of an active full-length hammerhead RNA that cleaves in the crystal. Using the natural satellite tobacco ringspot virus hammerhead RNA sequence, the self-cleavage reaction was modulated by substituting the general base of the ribozyme, G12, with A12, a purine variant with a much lower pKa that does not significantly perturb the ribozyme's atomic structure. The active, but slowly cleaving, ribozyme thus permitted isolation of enzyme-substrate and enzyme-product complexes without modifying the nucleophile or leaving group of the cleavage reaction, nor any other aspect of the substrate. The predissociation …

Mckithen V. Brown: Due Process And Post-Conviction Dna Testing, Elizabeth A. Laughton Sep 2008

Mckithen V. Brown: Due Process And Post-Conviction Dna Testing, Elizabeth A. Laughton

Duke Law & Technology Review

When the Second Circuit decided McKithen v. Brown, it joined an ever-growing list of courts faced with a difficult and pressing issue of both constitutional and criminal law: is there a federal constitutional right of post-conviction access to evidence for DNA testing? This issue, which sits at the intersection of new forensic technologies and fundamental principles of constitutional due process, has divided the courts. The Second Circuit, wary of reaching a hasty conclusion, remanded McKithen’s case to the district court for consideration. The district court for the Eastern District of New York was asked to decide whether a constitutional right …

Molecular And Macromolecular Alterations Of Recombinant Adenoviral Vectors Do Not Resolve Changes In Hepatic Drug Metabolism During Infection Sep 2008

Molecular And Macromolecular Alterations Of Recombinant Adenoviral Vectors Do Not Resolve Changes In Hepatic Drug Metabolism During Infection

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

In this report we test the hypothesis that long-term virus-induced alterations in CYP occur from changes initiated by the virus that may not be related to the immune response. Enzyme activity, protein expression and mRNA of CYP3A2, a correlate of human CYP3A4, and CYP2C11, responsive to inflammatory mediators, were assessed 0.25, 1, 4, and 14 days after administration of several different recombinant adenoviruses at a dose of 5.7 x 1012 virus particles (vp)/kg to male Sprague Dawley rats. Wild type adenovirus, containing all viral genes, suppressed CYP3A2 and 2C11 activity by 37% and 39%, respectively within six hours. Levels fell …

Word Sense Disambiguation In Biomedical Ontologies With Term Co-Occurrence Analysis And Document Clustering, Bill Andreopoulos, Dimitra Alexopoulou, Michael Schroeder

Faculty Publications, Computer Science

With more and more genomes being sequenced, a lot of effort is devoted to their annotation with terms from controlled vocabularies such as the GeneOntology. Manual annotation based on relevant literature is tedious, but automation of this process is difficult. One particularly challenging problem is word sense disambiguation. Terms such as |development| can refer to developmental biology or to the more general sense. Here, we present two approaches to address this problem by using term co-occurrences and document clustering. To evaluate our method we defined a corpus of 331 documents on development and developmental biology. Term co-occurrence analysis achieves an …

Cardioprotective Signal Transduction To Mitochondria, Casey Lee Quinlan Sep 2008

Cardioprotective Signal Transduction To Mitochondria, Casey Lee Quinlan

Dissertations and Theses

Intracellular responses to external stimuli require reception of the message at the plasma membrane followed by encoding and transmission of the message to its effectors downstream. In this process, diverse cellular responses are mediated by many redundant molecular players. The apparent generality and redundancy of many kinases, such as the mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), suggests that signal transduction must gain specificity through tight regulation. Diffusion and random collisions of relevant signaling components seem insufficient to explain the multilayered complexity observed in cell signaling cascades. Emerging hypotheses suggest that signaling machinery may achieve enhanced specificity and control by exploiting the compartmentalization …

Co-Up-Regulation Of Three P450 Genes In Response To Permethrin Exposure In Permethrin Resistant House Flies, Musca Domestica, Fang Zhu, Ting Li, Lee Zhang, Nannan Liu Sep 2008

Co-Up-Regulation Of Three P450 Genes In Response To Permethrin Exposure In Permethrin Resistant House Flies, Musca Domestica, Fang Zhu, Ting Li, Lee Zhang, Nannan Liu

Entomology Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Insects may use various biochemical pathways to enable them to tolerate the lethal action of insecticides. For example, increased cytochrome P450 detoxification is known to play an important role in many insect species. Both constitutively increased expression (overexpression) and induction of P450s are thought to be responsible for increased levels of detoxification of insecticides. However, unlike constitutively overexpressed P450 genes, whose expression association with insecticide resistance has been extensively studied, the induction of P450s is less well characterized in insecticide resistance. The current study focuses on the characterization of individual P450 genes that are induced in response to permethrin …
