Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
We have previously shown that surfactant protein (SP)-A and SP-D are present in the stallion´s genital system. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the expression and presence of SP-A and SP-D in the seminal plasma and accessory sex glands of stallions. We characterized further the SP-A and SP-D in the seminal plasma of stallions by western blotting and immunohistochemically in accessory sex glands. On one-dimensional SDS-PAGE electrophoresis and western blots, bands for SP-A (34 kDa) and SP-D (43 kDa) in seminal plasma and accessory sex gland tissue extracts were detected. The similarity between biochemical properties (relative molecular …

Production Losses Due To Endemic Foot-And-Mouth Disease In Cattle In Turkey, Berri̇n Şentürk, Cengi̇z Yalçin
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This research paper is aimed at estimating foot-and-mouth disease (FMD)-induced production losses in individual dairy and fattening cattle in Turkey. The data used were obtained from a Delphi Expert Opinion Survey. The weighted average FMD-induced financial losses for all breeds were estimated to be $294/head for a milking cow, $152/head for a dairy heifer and $197/head for beef cattle. However, the amount of financial loss varied across different breeds, ages, and sexes. The study findings suggest that culling Holstein breed cows, beef cattle, and Holstein and cross breed female calves, as soon as they have an FMD infection, would be …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Seventeen Eastern Anatolian Red (EAR) bulls at 20 months of age were divided into 2 treatment groups and fed for either 168 days (S) or 210 days (L). Initial and final weights were not significantly different. While bulls in the L group had the highest total weight gain (149.0 vs. 177.2 kg), feed efficiency ratio was superior for the cattle fed for 168 days. Carcass weight, spleen and front + hind feet weights as a percentage of slaughter weight, weight of kidney fat, percentage of kidney, pelvic, and heart fat, and yield grade all increased (P < 0.05) with feeding time. Bulls in the L group received a higher (P < 0.05) panel rating for juiciness, and the panel juiciness score was closely associated with tenderness measurements such as panel tenderness score, Warner Bratzler shear force value, and number of chews before swallowing. It is concluded that duration of finishing significantly influenced carcass, slaughter, and organoleptic beef quality traits of young EAR bulls.

Effect Of Thyroid Hormone Concentration On The Transcriptional Response Underlying Induced Metamorphosis In The Mexican Axolotl (Ambystoma), Robert B. Page, S. R. Voss, A. K. Samuels, J. J. Smith, S. Putta, C. K. Beachy
Biology Faculty Publications (Archived)
Background: Thyroid hormones (TH) induce gene expression programs that orchestrate amphibian metamorphosis. In contrast to anurans, many salamanders do not undergo metamorphosis in nature. However, they can be induced to undergo metamorphosis via exposure to thyroxine (T4). We induced metamorphosis in juvenile Mexican axolotls (Ambystoma mexicanum) using 5 and 50 nM T4, collected epidermal tissue from the head at four time points (Days 0, 2, 12, 28), and used microarray analysis to quantify mRNA abundances. Results: Individuals reared in the higher T4 concentration initiated morphological and transcriptional changes earlier and completed metamorphosis by Day 28. In contrast, initiation of metamorphosis …

Noteworthy Record Of The Mediterranean Water Shrew (Neomys Anomalus) From South-Western Iran (Mammalia: Soricomorpha), Hamid Reza Esmaeili, Ghorbanali Gholamhosseini, Azad Teimory, Boris Krystufek
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Three water shrew specimens were collected in the Sheshpir spring (2303 m a.s.l.), Fars province, south-western Iran. In pennial morphology, which is species-specific in the genus Neomys Kaup, 1829, the specimens were indistinguishable from N. anomalus Cabrera, 1907. The Sheshpir spring is located approximately 900 km to the south-south-west of Gorgan, the only site in Iran where N. anomalus has been known to occur so far. The spring is a stony basin with bare banks and poorly developed aquatic vegetation and as such is an atypical habitat for water shrews. It is noteworthy that fish are absent in the spring.
